Meg 2: The Trench (2023) Genre : Action Rating : 7/10 Jonas Taylor leads a research team on an exploratory dive into the deepest depths of the ocean once again. So, I hit the cinemas with my uncle for Meg 2, and let me tell you, there's something oddly satisfying about watching colossal sea creatures snacking on humans in glorious 3D. Call it a guilty pleasure, but the mix of light gore, Mother Nature asserting her dominance, and those wonderfully cheesy plotlines just hits all the spots for me. Now, the first Meg set the bar sky-high, and while the sequel didn't quite soar to those heights, it didn't crash and burn either. It was more like a rollercoaster – not the biggest or fastest, but pretty enjoyable. The kind of flick where you can't help but chuckle because, seriously, who else but Jason Statham can outswim a literal prehistoric monster? Sure, Meg 2 might not win any awards for cinematic brilliance, but it definitely deserves a medal for making me laugh my way through the entire ride. Black Museum (9.5) Highlights: - Hang the DJ, despite some issues at the beginning, is one of the few Black Mirror episodes that differ from the rest by taking a more positive outlook on the use of the technology - The Visuals of Metalhead - Black Museum is a sick ride. There are so many disturbing elements in sci-fi when it comes to consciousness and this episode makes a lot out of that Criticism: - USS Callister seems borderline silly without managing to capture what makes whacky sci-fi great. The longer it goes on the larger the plot holes become - Arkangel and Crocodile have nice ideas but super flawed executions. Arkangel doesn’t take the implications of the technology far enough and Crocodile just takes too long to introduce it and at the same time focuses more on other aspects of the episode which have been done before and more effectively at that - Metalhead gives a whole bunch of nothing. Why are the things happening? An often dull, lifeless and kinda boring movie. The acting is wooden and stiff, filled with characters who feel like they’re meeting for the first time in every scene often with awkward and silted dialogue (the little bit about comic con felt ripped out of a screenplay from 1995) Too many side plots that feel just unessacery especially in film where you’ve come for Statham vs Giant Shark. Most annoyingly though there’s a serious lack of Meg action, it’s the Meg 2, I came here for the Meg, not an abundance of boring secondary characters, dull villains and a plainly obvious mole. The third act finally turns things around as we get what the trailer promised, Jason Statham fighting a giant shark and lots of other silly action like an octopus attacking a helicopter, finally the film delivered on what you’d expect from a big silly summer blockbuster. So I admit I did enjoy that stuff, it just about made up for the rest of the film, just. 5/10

Meg 2: The Trench (2023) dir. Ben Wheatley While investigating the deep depths of the ocean and a mining facility, a research team encounters multiple megalodon sharks and other aquatic threats. Allen and I enjoyed the first Meg and its weird Chinese/America mish-mash. It was a fun movie that didn't take itself too seriously and judging from the trailers that's what it looked like the sequel was going to be. Well we turned out to be wrong, at least partially. Because Meg 2's first half is a lesson in patience and suspension of disbelief. And if you can make it past all that, you can reward yourself with the treat that is the last half of this movie. Allen and I hated all of the underwater stuff beneath the trench. It was so boring and it felt like nothing down there really mattered. There was that point where a character goes full villain and orders the group to kill Jason Statham - 100% ripping off the Red Queen while she's at it. The other villain reminded Allen of the masked villain of Savage Beach and seeing them side by side they are actually pretty spot on. We didn't particularly care for the CCP influence into the whole movie. It was present in the original movie, but even more so here. And then you have all the underwater crap that I just could not suspend my disbelief for. There's no way blowing water up your nose will prevent you from being crushed under deep water pressure. This whole movie treated the deep ocean as if it were the shoreline and that was kind of obnoxious. But once the sharks start to attack Fun Island, the strengths of the first movie kind of come back. But the first movie is still better by leaps and bounds. Hell, I liked Sharknado 2 and 3 more than I liked Meg 2 and that's a sad realization to come to terms with, yet here we are. I went to see Meg 2: The Trench the other week, I haven’t properly watched the first one but I got the jist it: Jason Statham vs giant prehistoric shark, I was expecting much but I’ve got an Unlimited Card so I might as well use it and it was pretty much what I expected. It was very scary, funny or thrilled but it had few ok moments and my expecatations were pretty low and so I didn’t have anything to be disappointed about. Watched MURDERED BY MY FATHER - Honour based violence showcased in all its brutality. Shahzad's daughter Salma was betrothed to Shahzad's work colleague Haroon in a promise Shahzad made to his late wife. However, Salma has been neglecting her study to spend more and more time with Imy, and it's Imy that she wants to spend her life with, thus "bringing shame on me" in Shahzad's twisted & backward mind. Filmed somewhere in East London, this 1hr and 15 mins production, conveys that tackling honour based issues is still relevant in our modern times and such backward thinking needs to be challenged. After seeing the way Haroon reacts with Shahzad, when he finds out that Salma is with Imy, a sane father would reconsider his choice and put aside his ego and pride, but Shahzad is shown to take matters in to his own hands, leading to a truly horrible finale that makes you question whether such an atrocity should ever have been televised. My better half was reeling in shock. One slight niggle that I had was that the producers chose to focus on one Pakistani family. Instead they could have broken the film in to 5 different episodes, showing the cultural differences, but similar behaviour taking form in Indian and Bangladeshi families as well as someone from the Indian community wishing to marry someone from the Pakistani community and even mixed race marriage, which is more prevalent today than it ever was. Reviewing The Meg 2 The Trench; I just watched this and it’s ok not as good as the first film. As for the storyline Johan and the team are researching the deepest ocean but after stumbling into a mining mission they are in trouble and need to get back to base all while Megs are on the loose. As for the cast I liked Jason Statham Page Kennedy and others good too. Overall it’s not a bad film has first one is better but has action and fun just not a great storyline for me. En eaux très troubles / The Meg 2 : The Trench (2023) de Ben WHEATLEY - 1h56 🇺🇸🇨🇳 Jonas (Jason STATHAM) s'occupe désormais de Meiying (Shuya Sophia CAI) avec son oncle Jiuming (Wu JING), nouveau directeur du Mana One, depuis le décès de sa mère. Jiuming essaye d'apprivoiser un bébé Mégalodon dans le cadre de ses recherches. Lorsqu'une nouvelle expédition du Mana One est attaquée par une base minière secrète ; cachée dans la Fosse des Mariannes et appartenant à Hillary DRISCOLI (Sienna GUILLORY), investisseure dans Mana One ; des Megalodons, des dinosaures marins et un calamar géant sont libérés ... Dans cette suite, on retrouve STATHAM, CAI, JING, GUILLORY mais également Cliff CURTIS, Melissanthi MAHUT, Page KENNEDY, Sergio PERIS-MENCHETA ou encore Skyler SAMUELS. Alors ici, il y a plein de trucs qui vont pas qui rendent le film moyen. Premièrement : apparemment on peut nager à 7600m de profondeur sans combinaison, et résister à la pression (760 bar soit environ 780kg/cm²). IMPOSSIBLE ! Deuxièmement : on dit que le monde des Mégalodons est sous la Fosse des Mariannes (~ -11000m). Hors apparemment on arrive à être à -7600m de profondeur tout en étant dans ce monde là). IMPOSSIBLE x2 ! Les scénaristes, les ingénieurs et le réalisateur faisaient la sieste ou quoi ? Pour le reste, de jolis plans qui sortent de l'ordinaire (l'interieur de la gueule du Meg notamment), de bonnes musiques, et de jolies couleurs dans de nombreux décors. Le film est bien rythmé mais je trouve personnellement la première moitié du film (en profondeurs) plus ennuyeuse que la seconde moitié. Par ailleurs on regrettera aussi l'absence de romance ici et les twists très prévisibles. Dans l'ensemble, le spectacle est au rendez-vous mais complètement à part du 1er film. À voir ! At this point I think it’s obligatory for studios to make uncalled for sequels to any Jason Statham film not directed by Guy Ritchie. Despite my lack of interest in the property itself, a promising trailer actually had me curious to see if this would improve upon its mediocre predecessor. In some ways it does, but for the most part this is a disjointed mess that lacks any consistency in its tone. The first half of this movie is not terrible, but still painfully dull. The attempts at action are indecipherable from the combination of dark lighting, fast editing, & shaky camera work. There are multiple instances in which I had little to no clue what was actually happening onscreen. Whenever something happened to a character, I’d have to wait to figure out which character it happened to. Aside from that, the movie is adequately serviceable enough save for some moments in the writing & acting. That is until the third act, which takes a drastic turn. This finale is packed with all of the irrational, ridiculous chaos that I wanted from a Meg movie. It enters that realm of being so intentionally bad that it’s good. The problem is that while I had a blast watching this, the first two acts set nothing up for the ending to be like it. Also I can’t see myself ever wanting to revisit this movie as a whole. If you want insanity, be patient & by the time the credits roll you’ll have been rewarded.
