It never ceases to amaze me how people miss such interesting wildlife on their walks. This grey heron was just a few paces from the Leven towpath which was quite busy with walkers, joggers and cyclists. The plumage varies according to age and season. We tend to see these as simply herons or perhaps "grey herons", more specifically ARDEA CINEREA. Did you know that : In medieval times the heron was a favourite quarry of falconers who valued its great flying skills and ability to evade the falcon's stoops. Roast herons were also popular at medieval banquets: the young birds, called branchers, were thought to be the best to eat. The fat of a heron killed at full moon was once believed to be a cure for rheumatism. [RSPB]. Friday Fly Day ... and because I have quite a few duck photos, I'll pop up some info on the hybridization of our Pacific Black Duck with the Northern Mallard and how we can identify them. The differences are so subtle, and I have trouble telling the difference most of the time 😔 This week we'll have a look at legs and bills. . . The Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) was introduced to Australia in the 1860s and has been spreading slowly across the southeast and other populated areas. Mallard populations in Australia are supplemented by the dumping of domestic ducks. Pacific Black Ducks and Mallards are closely related species and have similar habits and occupy the same environments. Where they are both present, the two species commonly crossbreed to produce fertile hybrids. A common misconception is that hybrids must have orange legs– this is incorrect. The leg colour of PBD can range from grey/dark brown to orange. A good way to determine if natural or not is to view the legs in the shade, as bright sunlight often exaggerates the orange. A patchy or discoloured bill is quite easy to recognise, assuming you can get close enough to see. A pure Pacific Black Duck will have an evenly coloured slate-grey bill, sometimes with a hint of green. Obvious hybrids will have yellow/green, orange or red bills, often with large dark blotches. Subtle hybrids may have a green/yellow tinged bill, especially at the bill base and tip. So blessed to be in the presence of this beautiful bird this morning ❤️ I decided to book an early birthday present for myself and go out on another trip with Kim at @levenrivercruises 😊 A week of watching the weather... is the weather going to be okay, isn't the weather going to be okay? Leven Canyon offers a couple of alternative hikes to Cruikshanks Lookout, The Edge Lookout and the Devil’s Elbow. The more precarious hike along a cliff edge with many stairs and down a ladder leads to the base of the canyon. It gives you a great view of the Devil’s Elbow where the Leven River turns dramatically like a v shape (or elbow). When you reach the base of the canyon you can really appreciate the force of the river where a huge pile of forest timber lays on the banks. There are many massive circular holes eroded in the rocks from the force of the water.
