Continuing on my journey of shooting and editing differently… Here’s a picture that the “rules” of photography may say is a little imperfect. There’s grain, there’s lots of warmth in the color, the angle isn’t straight, the composition may be too cropped. I asked Alea if I could photograph her family because in what I’m being inspired by, the characteristics listed above, along with some others, are something I’m drawn to right now…and it’s the kind of photography that I think captures her family best and tells their story well. It’s the kind of photography I want to share more of. Clean, sharp, bright, straight-lined, well-lit, true colors is what I’ve been aiming for in my photos. A brief respite, part two. Atlas had only experienced a hot tub once when she was two months old, and I think she enjoyed it more than I. She almost fell asleep in the water with a grin on her face! I was very aware of the heat factor, so the temperature was set to a comfortable 99 degrees Fahrenheit. The warmth likely reminded her of when she was in utero. The second time around, Atlas loved it even more – so much so that she was upset when it was time to get out and eat dinner. I distracted her with a quick shower. Then she gorged herself on carrots and peas (and of course chicken and rice off my plate, because my food is never really mine). After she passed out at 7:30, I brought the monitor outside and made a campfire. There were two cows in a distant field that mooed periodically, echoing through the dark of the surrounding trees. I stared into the flames, nearly comatose after a full belly and running alongside a toddler all day. Hi there, it’s been a while since I’ve shared or created anything. As… I’ve kinda been hiding. Hiding because I had some trauma to heal through, and it felt most comforting to insulate oneself from the online world for a while. There’s also been some big changes for my family. In the middle of 2023 we decided to move to the US, so last year was a time of tidying up, closing a chapter in New Zealand, which was big work for us all. Currently we’re acclimating to the (very high altitude!) of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, but being closer to nature has been filling my cup. I have VERY keenly observed my own relationship with food and my body over this time, and it’s been humbling to see that old patterns and coping mechanisms don’t ever go away. But one thing I’ve not been able to see before, is that there’s even such tenderness in those old habits as you seek relief and safety from a bowl of rich pasta past the point of fullness. The old me would only have judged this behaviour as “not good enough”. But I now see how protective judgment and shame is: to shield you from a level of intimacy with yourself that you’re not entirely comfortable with. Will share more about this in due course. In between paintings I try to practice drawing, a lot. I usually don’t draw famous people but this picture of “Madonna” inspired me and brought me back my childhood memories. I loved her when I was a teenager, so much that I wanted to be just like her. So, when I was 13 or 14 years old I took my mom’s scissors and I cut my hair! Then put hairspray and back combed my hair, cut my pair of stockings just perfectly to fit under my knees, stole one of my older sister’s boots and her lipstick, took my father’s hat and got ready to go out… to buy milk for my mom! 🤦🏻♀️😂😂 I remember feeling absolutely cool, with my 180 pounds, clearly overweight, with my thick eyeglasses and acne. Starting the ascent to the Old Man of Storr. It was very cold and windy. Turning back I was in awe of the stunning bay view with the isle of Raasay in the background. Love the moody tones and the muted colors. This required very little editing. How do you like it?
