Playing in the clouds โฐ๏ธโ๏ธ Few snaps of our visit up to beautiful Coniston a few weeks back, I love Coniston so much, the area itself is just so rugged and looks like it's taken right from a Tolkien novel, overlapping mountains as far as the eye can see and a sense of atmosphere I don't think I've ever felt before! The low clouds and chilly weather absolutely made this brief visit, you really feel like you're out in nature here. I've never climbed the old man fully, it's one of the higher mountains in the lake District with beautiful sweeping views over lake Coniston and an abundance of industrial architecture as it was once a huge copper mine. The Fairfield Horseshoe is about ten miles long and takes in eight of the wainwright fells of the Lake District! We parked in Ambleside and walked past the lovely Rydal Hall before starting the ascent up Nab Scar. The ascent is steep in places but once youโre up that first fell, it pretty much plateaus for the rest of the hike! Angletarn Pikesโ south summit overlooks Angle Tarn, whose distinctive shape resembles a giant fish hook (hence the name!), and the slightly higher north summit overlooks Ullswater. โฐ๏ธ The hike starts from Patterdale (southern end of Ullswater), and comes in around 8.5km out and back. Youโll know when youโve reached this point - itโs a big, flat convergence of paths with a cairn in the middle (see picture 6!). โน๏ธ From here, youโll cross a small beck before peeling off towards Rake Crag and Angletarn Pikesโ north summit. If youโre peak bagging, this one stands 2m higher and is the Wainwright summit - great views over Ullswater too! โน๏ธ The summits are a big jumble of paths, and thereโs no need to follow a prescriptive route between them - you can see where youโre headed, and there are loads of ways to make the south summit ascent (with lots of optional scrambly routes up - always a firm fave!). โน๏ธ Check out the ace view of Angle Tarn from above before heading down to the tarn itself if you fancy it. Itโs very cool, with a little peninsula and a couple of little islets, and makes a great spot for lunch. โน๏ธ Loop back round and rejoin the path you took on the ascent to head back down into Patterdale. โน๏ธ This is a great family walk, with a couple of brief steeper sections, but overall a balanced climb. Itโs a bigger effort than the very small fells, but well worth it, and a good step up for kids whoโve completed some daintier summits! โน๏ธ Iโve also included an alternate route, adding Place Fell for a longer hike (the route we took on this walk).

Buttermere, what a place. Water was crystal clear and surrounded by steep hills and mountains. I stayed low level and just did a loop around the lake with a bacon roll and a cuppa in the cafe at the end.
