✨400+ Year Old Shoe✨ 👞This little leather children’s shoe dates back to the 17th century. 🚽It was found down a latrine in Linlithgow Palace on the east side of the building during an excavation. (I have this image of a little child having a tantrum 400 years ago and then throwing their shoe down the loo 😅👶🏼) 👞🔨 Linlithgow has a long history of shoemaking and leathermaking dating back to the 1570s. ✨The Royal Apartments at Linlithgow Palace✨ 👑 During the reign of James IV (1488 -1514) the royal apartments in the palace were moved to where they can be seen today. 🏰 The main hall was on the lower level (labelled ‘1️⃣’) had a huuuge fireplace at one end and this room was where James IV would have carried out his legal work and also received visitors. 🏰 Above the main hall was most likely the Queen’s apartments (labelled ‘2️⃣’) where you can see another huge fireplace on that level. 🏰 Behind each of these rooms were narrow corridors (you can see the doorway of one on the right hand side of the fireplace, labelled ‘3️⃣’) and this would have been where the attendants would have slept. These also would have been used for serving purposes too so they were always near by to the King and Queen. 🏰 The little shelves built into the halls would have held highly valuable belongings so show off their grandeur. The Gate to Linlithgow Palace Mary, Queen of Scots, was born on 8th of December 1542 at Linlithgow Palace, to King James V and his French second wife, Mary of Guise. Mary was baptised at the nearby Church of St Michael shortly after she was born. On 14th December, six days after her birth, she became Queen of Scotland when her father died. But the palace fell quickly into decline when James VI moved the royal court to London in 1603, following his coronation as James I of England. The palace’s north quarter, which probably housed the queen’s apartment where Mary was born, fell to the ground in 1607. It was rebuilt around 1620, on the orders of James VI. The end came in 1746, when a great fire swept through the palace. James was their only child to survive to adulthood. James inherited the throne at only seventeen months, after the death of his father at the Battle of Flodden. I've been exploring at Bo'ness and Linlithgow today on the Firth of Forth. Linlithgow has a big palace castle which I wanted to see as a possible northern fortress but it had no towers, see swipes so I've not put in a bid for it. I asked the two oystercatchers to fly me up for an aerial view but apparently they prefer to dive, we didn't have much in common but maybe @jarvis_the_bear will give me a badge for spotting them.
