Went tonight to see Alan Sparhawk (Low) at @constellationchicago...first time at the venue, and a big thumbs up...and first time seeing Alan since the death of his wife and musical partner Mimi Parker, which was more emotional than I thought it would be. It was a great show, with some new and interesting material. There were no Low songs, but he did mention that one song (Not Broken) was one he had worked on with Mimi. Oh and he covered Childish Gambino... At the end of the show Alan told everyone to have a good night, and that grief and loss are ok, and that confusion about that is what leads to depression. He insisted we all look ahead and know it's OK to grieve, but never stop moving forward. Low “Christmas”, 1999. Maybe I should have posted this as the first Low album, but to me this is a compilation and even a Christmas compilation and I always post them last in a series of albums. I guess this is the only Christmas album in my collection. It is a beautiful album, and it is a fantastic experience to hear these traditional songs being exposed to the Low universe. So, if you need a little holiday spirit in the shape of “Silent Night” or “Just Like Christmas” – this album will sure put you in the right mood… This is my final Low post as I have run out of albums with the amazing band. Low “Double Negative”, 2018. This might be the album I have played the most with Low. The first time I played it I was sure there was an error on the first song “Quorum”. I checked the record and cleaned it an extra time with the brush, but still this annoying sound of error. Then I downloaded the mp3 files, just to ensure there was nothing wrong and when I found out that all was as it should be, I simply sat down and started enjoying this difficult listen. When I listen to this album, I always think of our difficult start, and how this album has grown into a true masterpiece for me. These songs simple moves something inside of me, I do not know why, but they do. Like pieces of sound that once was a whole, but someone took a scissor and cut them into small pieces, and it took Sparhawk and Paker to assemble them again and in the process strange surfaces of vocals and noise sneaked into the tunes and it all ended up on the “Double Negative” album. Low “The Invisible Way”, 2013. Hello, are you there? Another signature album from Low, this time with Jeff Tweedy of Wilco behind the producer desk and doing an excellent job keeping us on the path where Low wants us to be. I guess many people would say that one or two albums with the band are sufficient and maybe they are right? But I enjoy these sound paintings, painted in colors that does not scream at you, dark, white, gray, and maybe a little red or yellow dot here and there. Low “The Great Destroyer”, 2005. Ok deep breath, 100% focus as I dive into my humble Low collection. National US treasure with married couple Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker of Duluth, Minnesota. In 2022 Parker lost her fight to cancer and the band disbanded and that is all I will mention about this tragic event. Low formed in 1993 and released their debut album “I Could Live in Hope” in 1994. During a career spanning over almost thirty years, they released 13+ studio albums, plus live albums, and compilations. The band was focused around Sparhawk and Parker and had a bunch of other musicians sitting in over the years. All that can be found in detail on the wild internet. This album is their seventh release and my entry to the band. So once again I find myself a late bloomer to a band which in my point of view have made a profound impact on the side of the music map where you will find lo-fi, slow experimental noise music and everything that surround this groundbreaking band. One more point: To me Low is a difficult one to handle. If you ask me about my favorite song or album by the band, I will look at you in disbelief and mumble something understandable. Low - Hey What. This band is beyond amazing. I’m glad they made the music they did. This final album was like a one two punch for me for this band. Double Negative was just so different from their regular sound. Hey What is a jarring listen with broken down musicality that focuses the music squarely on Alan and Mimi’s dueling vocals. I have played this record at lots of different volumes. I think it’s good at any volume, but I suggest it be played on 11. I’ll miss this band. Bombay Beach, CA (Salton Sea) mid 2000s. Stuck! This one was totally gone the last time I returned to Bombay Beach, as were most of the photographic gems there. Wanted to use this one as an album cover for a recording of fEATHER songs entitled "Loweded" which came from a jam session after seeing the iconic band Low play an epic show at the Casbah San Dego, CA. Spell was cast over the whole crowd and staff that show. Dead silence for the first three songs, and in between, until Alan Sparhawk broke it with a "Good evening" from the microphone. Then suddenly glasses were tinkling from the bar again and chatter could be heard around the space. Ayer, treinta años del hermoso disco debut de Low, I Could Live In Hope. Desde el saque la excepcional "Words" pone el sello distintivo del sonido del trío, con su instrumentación minimalista, de melodías lentas y tristes, creando ambientes sonoros que ofrecen una sensación de soledad e incertidumbre que paradójicamente resultan acogedores y que parecen ofrecernos un halo de esperanza, logrando un estilo difícil de clasificar, pero que algunos se atreverían a denominarlo como “Sadcore” otros sectores de la prensa lo bautizaron como “Slowcore”, etiqueta que su líder Alan Sparhawk aceptaría a regañadientes y después rechazaría; y es que resulta desafiante definir música tan lúgubre y bella a la vez. La temática de las letras del álbum, giran alrededor de temores personales y experiencias inolvidables que se enlazan con referencias bíblicas, entonadas por medio de voces etéreas y acompañadas por ondas de reverberación de guitarra, creando un fondo musical oscuro. Existen canciones como “Lullaby” que tranquilamente podrían haber sido parte de un "b-side" del Faith de The Cure u otras de hermosa sonoridad como la breve “Sea” o “Sunshine”, que nos llevan a profundos parajes melancólicos, poblados por los recuerdos de tristezas del pasado. Rany boskie, jeden z najważniejszych instrumentalistów w moim życiu! Cave & Ellis to besprzecznie jeden z najpotężniejszych kompozytorskich duetów na arenie muzycznej, a ja bezgranicznie wielbię to, co na skrzypcach wyprawia Ellis w Bad Seeds (ukochane partie? A proszę bardzo - 3. "Oh My Lord", 2. "West Country Girl", 1.
