This #wee #alien is a #nestling whom the #wind blew clean out of its #nest. It was close to #flying but hadn't yet acquired enough of its #feathers. We replaced its #birdnest, also sent to the #ground by a particularly strong #gust, then put the #poorlittlething back into it. We began #handfeeding it mashed #earthworms for a few cycles until we saw that the #mamabird had returned. It is absolutely #untrue that a #babybird will be rejected by its #mother if touched by a #human. I commented on this phenomenon in another post a couple weeks ago. Completely untrue. And I'll bet that this #misconception alone, that's been around for generations, is what keeps more #people from saving #babyanimals, and replacing #nests in trees. Several years ago, when my sons were small, we heard #loud and incessant #chattering from a squirrel. Turns out, the squirrel had dropped one of her babies moving it from an old nest to a new one. My sons and I found the baby, who was wedged into the crack of a sidewalk, picked up the tiny creature and placed it in the lowest crotch of the tree that we could reach,. Immediately, the mother squirrel frantically ran down, picked up the baby by the nape of its neck, ran up the tree, and placed it in the new nest. Andy and my bird obsession has just hit a new level. We were careful to install this cam thoughtfully. Mama bird wasn’t sure for the first 30 min or so. Flying in and out of her nest, then back to our porch railing looking up. When she realized it wasn’t moving and safe, she settled in.
