Home: (Part II) I’ve been reminded that our world is staggeringly beautiful & full of wondrous magic right here in front of us, but we are often too busy to even notice. I’ve met kind, lovely humans who have shared bread & water with me, shared rooms, bandaids & laughter with me. People who in our normal lives we would walk right by & never get to know. Here we feel more free to open ourselves, we share, we connect, we expect nothing & receive so much. . I have felt more free here than I have in a while, which is strange since the only boundaries I live within are the ones I create myself. Is it possible to live with this much joy? This much openness? To live without all the things I’m suppose to buy & just be grateful for all that I have? To talk about feelings & experiences rather than tv shows & restaurants? To wake up each morning outrageously excited to find out what is going to happen today? Is it possible to not make plans weeks or months in advance, to decide in the moment, or just go by gut feeling? To go to bed each night totally satisfied, totally full, feeling humbled & loved & like you are exactly where you are supposed be? I’m not sure it’s possible, but I’m going to give it a whirl & let you know. . Thank you to all of you who have written to me, offering encouragement & support for this trip & for my writing. My words have been as much for myself: about learning to open & share & be vulnerable, as they are to let you in on this beautiful Camino experience. If you’ve ever thought about going, do it! Home: (Part I) And now I am home (well one of them). I am resting as much as I can. I feel a deep, unfamiliar fatigue weighing on me. It’s funny, I don’t remember the hike being all that physically hard? It always seems to be that way, even after all the steps taken, the mountains climbed, the nights of patchy sleep (I’d say at least 100% of them), all the sweat that has poured out of me. . No, I don’t remember it being all that physical. Maybe I am tired from all the other work, the inner stuff, the weeks of lovingly digging between the layers of my soul to see what’s hidden. The process of shedding the bits of armour I’ve built up, pouring light on parts of me that have wanted to stay in the dark. I’ve been exposing myself to dissection & cross examination, not letting busyness be my escape, not letting discomfort be my excuse. Old stories of things I had forgotten floating up the deeper I dug. I’ve trudged along with uncomfortable feelings for hours on end, learning that sometimes the only way is through. I’ve realised over & over that I am the creator of my whole experience. That I am responsible for my own happiness. That at any moment I can release old injuries, let go of anything I don’t want to carry anymore, shed the layers of anything that doesn’t help me keep climbing & moving forward. . Day 20: We share a final breakfast with our pilgrim friends: strong americanos, tortilla patatas with a thick slice of crusty baguette & freshly squeezed orange juice. It’s been the staple meal for either breakfast or lunch or both through the whole trip, so we savour the last bites of this simple but so delicious meal. . It’ll be my final day here in Spain tomorrow & I need to get back to Bilbao to catch the plane. After a confusing run around to the Ribadesella train station, the info centre then the bus station, we run to catch the bus to Gijón (it’s exactly the wrong direction to get to Bilbao). . I climb aboard, my heart is pounding from the running & the stress of trying to find a way home when all the direct buses are full. I sit down, the bus begins. I realise it’s been a while since I’ve been in a moving vehicle, especially one that is driving through winding mountains. I sit back, I try to stay calm, I focus on my breath. . I feel reality pressing down upon me with the realisation that this trip is coming to a close. I am feeling so many things: sad, nervous, tired, full, elated, overwhelmed. I watch the streets whiz by as the bus hurtles along at what feels incredibly fast. I’ve been taking it so slowly for weeks now, moving only as fast as my feet can carry me & this speedy pace makes me feel instantly nauseous. My whole body starts to sweat, I ask for something to throw up in & then I pass out. . When I come to, my clothes are soaked through & my whole body feels limp & heavy. I am ok. Mostly confused by my very quick decline, but I sit back, close my eyes & sleep. We reach Gijón. Martin takes my hand & finds me a can of coke to drink. I am shaky & shivering because my clothes are wet, but I’m good enough to walk. I ask to see the ocean & sit in the sun. If anything, that’ll help me. . We book into a hotel. Clean sheets! A long, hot shower! Soft, fluffy towels! We sleep through the afternoon. I feel a little better. We explore Gijón. We eat pizza. I brave a little last vino Tinto. We walk around the bay, enjoying the last of the Spanish sunset. We talk about all the wonderful things we have experienced & how full our hearts are.
Day 19: I wake after a restless night of sleep on a squeaky plastic mattress, but I’ve shared a small room with friends, so it’s a slow & comfortable rising. We’ve slept in a large albergue attached to an old church. There are no shops around, or people, only pilgrims & the path, set against the backdrop of mountain peaks beside us. . My mood soars after an alarmingly strong espresso from a vending machine. It’s my last day of walking here, but I start the day’s journey with a bounce in my step. It’s hard to feel melancholic when I am so bursting with gratitude. I’ve only got to reach 10km until I have completed this section of the Camino del Norte on this trip & as we start the day I have a thousand thoughts jumping in my brain, all bubbling out of me in excited jibber jabber. I feel a rush of excitement, the closing of a chapter, the beginning of another. I make sure to look around me, take stock of the shape of the leaves, the colour of the earth, the sound of my footfall, the smell of the morning air, just to make sure that wherever I am, I will always be able to close my eyes & bring myself back here. This place is special, not at all because of the landscape, though much of it has been breathtaking, but for the way it makes me feel to be here. The calmness I’ve felt, the simplicity of my purpose, the connection to the sun & the land, the kinship of those who I’ve shared space with. Где живут пилигримы? Альберге - это такие гостиницы для пилигримов. Заселяют туда только при наличии креденсиаля - специального паспорта. Есть муниципальные альберге и частные. Муниципальные около 5-6 евро или за пожертвование. В них обычно огромная комната и от 20 до 150 мест для сна. Кровати двухъярусные. Одноразовое белье выдают, одеяла почти везде есть. Часто есть кухня, приборы, посуда и кастрюли не везде. Места забронировать нельзя. Как говорится, кто первый пришёл, того и тапки (кровать). 😅 С горячей водой и условиями в целом норм. Некоторые очень даже современные и классные: с гостиной, вендинговыми автоматами и всякими другими прикольными штуками. Интернет почти везде есть! Частные альберге: от 10 до 18 евро. Можно бронировать заранее. 👍🏻 Комнаты от 2 до 10 человек. И если повезёт, как некоторым 😜, то можно ночевать и одной, в шикааааарных условиях. Часто предоставляют завтрак и ужин, за доп плату, разумеется. ☕️🥗🥘 Я почти всегда оставалась в частных, они уютнее. Но миниципальные вполне комфортные! Так что не переживайте с жильем проблем нет.
