The large overhanging serac is about 50m above and behind me. (See yesterday's post) on the sprawling snowfield of the Shoulder below you can see the a climber retreating on the snow trail leading back to the small enclave of Camp 4 tents pitched around 8000m. This image displays the massive scale of the Shoulder and distance just to get to the bottom of the Bottleneck Couloir and Traverse. Once again, Lotta is carrying her trademark heavy pack- and at this point has been asking repeatedly to stop and take a quick drink- but I keep pushing us to get the top of the ridge in order to get off the face as the sun heats up the snow and destabilizes the slope. @donbowie Despite being the 3rd highest mountain on earth and only 25 meters (82 feet) shorter than K2, most people don't realize how difficult Kanchenjunga is. The traditional high camp (seen here) is at 7400m (24,278 ft) which is very low for a mountain so high- meaning summit day requires climbing 1200m to get to the top- okay if you're on bottled oxygen but VERY long without it. I made many mistakes on this climb, not just by setting my Camp 4 here,, but also by spending 5 nights at Camp 3 (7000m) on this push- meaning I shot this video on my 7th consecutive day above base camp- also unwise for climbing without O2. I was originally planning to go down after the 4 nights at Camp 3, but at the last minute decided to try for the summit along with this group to save some energy. Follow @nepal.travellers Despite being the 3rd highest mountain on earth and only 25 meters (82 feet) shorter than K2, most people don't realize how difficult Kanchenjunga is. The traditional high camp (seen here) is at 7400m (24,278 ft) which is very low for a mountain so high- meaning summit day requires climbing 1200m to get to the top- okay if you're on bottled oxygen but VERY long without it. I made many mistakes on this climb, not just by setting my Camp 4 here,, but also by spending 5 nights at Camp 3 (7000m) on this push- meaning I shot this video on my 7th consecutive day above base camp- also unwise for climbing without O2. Video shot last year of @lottahintsa and I on a very cool little traverse near the top of the Banana Ridge just below Camp 2 on Gasherbrum 2. Once again, Lotta is carrying her trademark heavy pack- and at this point has been asking repeatedly to stop and take a quick drink- but I keep pushing us to get the top of the ridge in order to get off the face as the sun heats up the snow and destabilizes the slope. A few days earlier I had set the fixed lines to just below this traverse along with @alexgavan and two Nepali climbers (Norbu and Sanu were their names, please post their Instagram handles in the comments if you know them) , and if I had my druthers would have avoided this section altogether and would have veered right instead of traversing left- but this part wasn't my pitch to lead. Featuring • @donbowie One year ago today, standing on one of the most elusive summits on earth, Annapurna I, 8091m (26,545ft). In the video @nimsdai asks me "Don you need to do one message for your brother Nims, if you've got a good head, for Project Possible." I reply, "I've got a good head." Nim's question about me about "having a good head" was a reference to how clearly I was thinking since I was the only one not using bottled oxygen that day. (The others had temporarily removed their O2 masks in order to speak clearly and to take unobstructed summit pictures and video- an understandable practice.) If you listen carefully, the very last words heard in the video are Nims saying, "So Don, please head back down"- which is reference to me going down immediately since being up there without O2 puts you on a very short survival clock- the human body is literally dying by the minute without supplemental O2 at that altitude. I consider Nims a good friend and respect him immensely- in particular for the rescues he and his team performed during his Project Possible campaign. Dinner time next to the kerosene heater with our liaison officer “Captain”. ❄️4. Waking up inside the warmest sleeping bag I’ve ever slept in @mountainhardwear (added hot water @nalgene and @platypushydration bottles in the evening and shut off any drafts of air with extra clothes). ❄️5. This is what I’d wake up to hanging above me (wind gusts would make the ice rain on me in the night and wake me up). ❄️6. A needle and a thread were my friends (thanks for borrowing them, Denis!). Here it’s my @lowa.outdoor boots getting treated. @donbowie says my boots look like elephant’s feet because my foot is so small. ❄️7. I’d go venturing around basecamp on days we couldn’t climb.
