Black Twitter Impact: Highlighting Some Of Its Most Memorable Moments Blogged by: @Staxxssss_malone With the upcoming release of the #BlackTwitter #documentary, it’s clear that this social media platform has become a powerful tool for Black voices and culture. From trending hashtags to viral memes, Black Twitter has been responsible for some of the most impactful and entertaining moments on the internet. In honor of its influence, we’ve compiled a brief list of some of the most memorable moments that have made Black Twitter a cultural staple. The “Zola” Series The #Zola series was a huge hit on Black Twitter, and it’s easy to see why. The gripping, true story of a stripper’s wild weekend in Florida quickly went viral, captivating audiences with its juicy drama and larger-than-life characters. But beyond the entertainment, the Zola series also had a significant impact on Black Twitter. It demonstrated that unheard voices can use social media to tell their own stories and gain recognition, a feat that has been challenging to achieve within mainstream media. By providing a platform for these diverse perspectives, Zola and Black Twitter have changed the way we tell stories and express our points of view. #OscarsSoWhite Back in 2015, Black Twitter had a major impact on Hollywood with the creation of the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite. The hashtag was a response to the lack of diversity among nominees at the Academy Awards, quickly becoming a topic of discussion on social media. With Black Twitter leading the charge, the hashtag became significant for those tired of Hollywood’s habitual overlooking of people of color in the film industry. It sparked a conversation about representation and inclusion that continues today, showcasing the potent influence of social media in effecting change. Negro Solstice On December 21, 2020, a new trend took off among Black Twitter users, who jokingly suggested they would be receiving magical powers...to read the rest log on to BallerAlert.com (clickable link on profile)

Join us for Movie Night on Friday, April 19th at 6:00PM as we feature the documentary, “How It Feels To Be Free” How It Feels To Be Free, New American Masters Documentary About Trailblazing Black Female Entertainers Lena Horne, Abbey Lincoln, Diahann Carroll, Nina Simone, Cicely Tyson and Pam Grier Executive produced by 15-Time Grammy Winner Alicia Keys and produced by Yap Films How It Feels To Be Free tells the inspiring story of how six iconic African American female entertainers – Lena Horne, Abbey Lincoln, Nina Simone, Diahann Carroll, Cicely Tyson and Pam Grier – challenged an entertainment industry deeply complicit in perpetuating racist stereotypes, and transformed themselves and their audiences in the process. Based on the book “How It Feels To Be Free: Black Women Entertainers and the Civil Rights Movement” by Ruth Feldstein, the film tells the story of how these six pioneering women broke through in an entertainment industry hell-bent on keeping them out and situates their activism as precursors to contemporary movements like #TimesUp, #OscarsSoWhite and #BlackLivesMatter. Award-winning director Yoruba Richen (The Green Book: Guide to Freedom, POV: Promised Land, Independent Lens: The New Black) examines the impact these trailblazing entertainers had on reshaping the narrative of Black female identity in Hollywood through their art and political activism while advocating for social change. The film highlights how each woman — singer, dancer and actress Lena Horne; jazz vocalist, songwriter and actress Abbey Lincoln; Tony-winning actress, singer and model Diahann Carroll; jazz, blues and folk singer Nina Simone; actress and model Cicely Tyson; and actress Pam Grier — harnessed their celebrity to advance the civil rights movement. Thank you @harperbooks for my gifted copy. Reviewing nonfiction is hard because a lot of it has to do with how much you personally relate to or find the subject interesting. I wanted to be an actor as a child and I’ve always been interested in movies and the lives of the stars, so this book grabbed my attention. Schulman details the Oscars at certain points over the years (mainly chronologically but not always). This isn’t a book of every win, or debating the merit of every win. Instead you get a snapshot of the Academy and America, and how Hollywood has struggled through the years to reflect Americans and our struggles. I’m always interested in how history repeats or parallels in what is happening now and what happened in the past. There were a few points in the book that felt very 2024 even if it happened decades before. The more modern Oscars ( #oscarssowhite and LaLaLa Land/Moonlight mix up) were interesting because I remember them happening and I liked the behind the scenes and commentary to get a deeper understanding. Do I think this is for everyone? No. If you’re not that interested in films, the people who make them and one of their most famous awards, pass. And I will say parts of the book dragged for me a bit (the 70s for example because I haven’t heard of or seen many of those movies). My classic movie taste is more Audrey Hepburn and musicals though. So none of the DVDs I scrounged up for the photo are Oscar winners but I think my movie taste runs a bit more commercial. Do you like award shows? Is there a movie you think deserves more love?

It was fifty years ago today that Marie Cruz — also known as Sacheen Littlefeather — calmly stepped up to the podium at the Academy Awards and threw a bombshell into the ceremony. On behalf of Marlon Brando, she declined the Oscar. Brando himself was back at his home in the Hollywood Hills, boycotting the event to protest the industry's portrayal of Native Americans. He also wanted to call attention to the standoff at Wounded Knee, in South Dakota. It was one of the most striking and dramatic moments in the history of the Oscars. Wearing a fringed buckskin dress and moccasins, her hair parted in the middle, the 26-year-old activist explained that Brando was rejecting the Oscar for Best Actor in The Godfather for his portrayal of Vito Corleone. "Hello. My name is Sacheen Littlefeather. I'm Apache and I am president of the National Native American Affirmative Image Committee," she said. "I'm representing Marlon Brando this evening, and he has asked me to tell you in a very long speech which I cannot share with you presently, because of time, but I will be glad to share with the press afterwards, that he very regretfully cannot accept this very generous award. And the reasons for this being are the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry. . . " The audience loudly booed her — but there were a few scattered cheers. In the years since, especially in the wake of #OscarsSoWhite movement, Sacheen Littlefeather's speech has been credited with raising awareness of the lack of diversity on the silver screen. In 2022, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sent Littlefeather a formal letter of apology for the reception to her speech. “The abuse you endured because of this statement was unwarranted and unjustified,” it read. Curiously, after her death a few months later, her family members accused Sacheen Littlefeather of falsely claiming Native American heritage. Fifty years ago, her voice was strong. #womensvoices #womenshistorymonth #publicspeaking

Been seeing a lot of posts recently about the impact of the movie Love Jones (1997) on our own behaviors. And I’m never going to be the one to write off this brilliant film just because it showcases humans engaging in toxic relationship behaviors like so many other artifacts from the popular imagination. Hell Romeo and Juliet was supreme toxicity people! Don’t play these inane games just to make talking points in the comments. Love Jones showcases and preserves a slice of Black history-the arts and poetry scene of Chicago in the 90s. The long slow takes showing our people doing what we love to do-make conversation and talk shit-is one of its underrated features. And on a personal note, it stimulated so much creative exploration of what was possible for me when I was still timid about taking my artistic gifts seriously. I’m not here for the Love Jones slander maybe we should see it doing what good art does well-mirroring our flaws back to us so we can employ some self examination 🪞 AND as always 👇🏽 Your support of this page is immensely impactful.

🎞️🎞️ Despite English being the standard language of the film industry, the Oscars are becoming more international with each passing year. At the 96th Academy Awards, three out of the ten films that were nominated for the Best Picture Oscar were non-English language films. 🎞️🎞️ Following the #OscarsSoWhite controversy in 2015, the Academy has undergone changes. People of Colour are being more strongly recognized for their achievements in the industry, and efforts have been made to increase geographical diversity and give the awards a more global perspective. This year, European films and filmmakers not only managed to be nominated but also won several awards. 🏆 #oscars #movies #oppenheimer #20daysinMariupol #anatomiedunechute #anatomyofafall #zoneofinterest #academyawards #bestmovie

#OscarsSoWhite SEVEN OUT OF TWENTY: ... .... This year, the 96th Oscars seemed to continue the trend of including more nominees of colour. Seven out of the 20 acting Oscar nominees were people of colour (the same number as last year). For each actor – Lily Gladstone, Danielle Brooks, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, America Ferrera, Colman Domingo, Sterling K. Brown and Jeffrey Wright – the nominations were their first. ...even now, no Black director has won best director at the Oscars, and no Black woman has ever been nominated for the award.

For the USA, Peace has never been an option, they've only known how to commit war and genocide for 248 years. It's where all your money goes... It's definitely not going towards education since the majority of the US population reads at a 6th grade level. No wonder so many people love the New York Post and think that the New York times is the highest level of journalism... Or worse yet can be so easily distracted by Rich nepotistic celebrities to the point where you completely ignore the suffering of your fellow person. #billieeilish #oscarssowhite #barbiegirl

After an incredibly tight awards season, we saw Lily Gladstone and Emma Stone face off in the Best Actress category at the 2024 Academy Awards, arguably the only category that night that didn't feel like a lock thanks to Oppenheimer's sweep. One of the closest races we've seen in years, Stone started off strong as the favourite. Then, leading up to the Oscars and in the wake of her Golden Globe and SAG win, Gladstone took the lead. But on the day, it was Emma Stone whose name was read out and crowned Best Actress for the 2024 Oscars. While we all might have our favourites coming into Oscars night, once the name is plucked from the envelope, we're usually happy with seeing any woman excel. But this year, it feels different. It's reductive to say that Stone won only because she's white. Similarly, to say that Gladstone should have won solely due to her Native identity is unfair. But undeniably, race does play a part in who was crowned today — just not for the explicit reasons you might think. "Nominating Lily Gladstone is a way for The Academy to wave its hand, and say, "Yes! We are changing!" But without following through, I can't help but feel like Gladstone was co-opted to present the illusion of progress, without any of the real signifiers that go along with it," writes #R29AU Culture Editor Alexandra Koster. For the full piece, tap the 🔗 in our bio. ✍️ @limewiregirl360 #lilygladstone #oscars #oscarssowhite #oscars2024 #emmastone #academyawards2024#bestactress [Image Description: The first slide is a picture of Lily Gladstone with a text overlay that says “Why Lily Gladstone’s Loss Feels Far More Deflating Than Usual” and "This isn't about pitting women against each other, or saying that one was 'robbed'. It's about calling out the systemic racism problem that the Academy has always had." The rest of the slides are quote excerpts from the article linked in our bio].

🎧 link in bio to read the news 👉 Featured HipHopWired Video SHUT UP Source: Rich Polk/Getty The Oscars are here and many hate watching just to complain about which actor of color got snubbed. It is what it is, and sometimes they get it right, and here are the Black actors we root for who actually won. After the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag went viral in 2016, thanks to April Reign, the Academy took notice and began diversifying its membership. While they may have gotten a little better at making sure actors of color make it, it's not much. But here's who won in 2024, so far. Da'Vine Joy Randolph won Best Actress for her lead role as Mary Lamb in The Holdovers. It's her first Oscar. Cord Jefferson American fiction won Best Adapted Screenplay. Brilliant. And that's it so far… #musicindustrynews #musicnews #musicblog #breakingnews

The one day of the year I tolerate free-to-air TV. Urgh the commercials. For all its faults, I bloody love the Oscars. I also like shouting at the Oscars for being so damn pale, male and stale. #Oscars #oscars2024 #oscarssowhite

(...) Desde a controvérsia, a Academia prometeu mais inclusão e diversidade. Mas, será que isso realmente aconteceu? An Oscars comeback? How the film academy went global and found its footing again LOS ANGELES For a few years, the Oscars looked to be hanging on by a thread. Viewership was plummeting. The pandemic didn't help. And the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization behind Hollywood’s biggest night, kept finding itself on the wrong side of the conversation, whether it be #OscarsSoWhite, envelope-gate, the blip that was the popular Oscar, the untelevised awards or the slap. Then a funny thing happened: Interest started increasing both in and outside the academy. It seemed people were excited about the movies and, they hope, the Oscars again. “It’s been an amazing year for film in general,” film academy CEO Bill Kramer said in a recent interview with The Associated Press. “Our art form has never been more relevant.” The scope, and wide public embrace, of the 10 films nominated for the best picture prize this year are proof. There is big studio fare, small intimate indies, two international films and two bilingual ones. And whether or not you think “Barbie” was snubbed in a few other categories, it still has people talking and debating what will happen at the 96th Oscars on March 10. “There’s a lot of great energy around the movies of 2023 and the show this year. So we’re extremely hopeful and excited,” Kramer said. “The show is shaping up to be remarkable.” Academy President Janet Yang chimed in that the “Barbie”-themed Jimmel Kimmel promo spot has over 35 million views, and the telecast is riding several years of ratings increases.

I have a confession that may get me kicked off bookstagram…but I have to speak my truth: I love movies just as much as I love books. The Oscars are my Super Bowl, and I try to see each Best Picture nominee every year. (I think this year is a very strong nominee list, personally! Not a film I hated in the bunch.) Yes, I recognize how flawed the Academy Awards are as a concept and a voting body. But it’s the spirit of the thing - award season is the time for movie-lovers to come together and chat about the art and craft of filmmaking, even if their favorites were snubbed. And the GOSSIP and the DRAMA behind the scenes is usually as fun to discuss as the films themselves.  Which is why I’ve been loving OSCAR WARS by Michael Schulman, which delves into the history of the Academy Awards and all the drama they’ve caused since their inception in 1929. As a Hollywood History nerd, I’m loving the juicy tidbits about Frank Capra and Bette Davis’ fraught campaigns, the studio wars, the early snubs. For some reason I never realized that Citizen Kane never won Best Picture - in fact, there was an active campaign against it!  Each chapter has been fascinating, and you can tell Schulman did a ton of research - the reference section alone is like 50 pages. I’m only about halfway through, but I’m excited to learn more about the movement behind the #OscarsSoWhite campaigns, the disastrous 1989 telecast, and of course, the infamous 2017 envelope switch.  As Bob Hope said, “Let’s get on with this farcical charade of vulgar egotism and pomposity.” 🎬 Q: Will you be watching the Oscars this Sunday, and are you rooting for any movies in particular? If not, what was your personal favorite 2023 film? #BookReview #OscarWars #MichaelSchulman #Oscars2024 #AcademyAwards #HollywoodHistory #NonFiction
