Day 27 - Loving your Linen Cupboard! Time to get ruthless and sort out your linen! Any mismatched sheet sets and towels can be immediately put in the pile to donate, as well as any cot/single bed sets your children have grown out of. As a general rule, two sets of sheets per bed and two-three towels per person is plenty. If you store other items in your linen cupboard (such as eskies/coolers, luggage, etc) go through each of these items and recycle anything that is damaged or beyond repair. For items you simply no longer use donate or sell them. Feel good tip – donate your clean cot/single bed sheets and towels to daycare centres. Day 26 - Sizing up your Sporting Goods! It doesn’t matter your age or ability, all of us have some sort of sporting paraphernalia around our homes, garages and gardens. Probably the hardest job of all is locating it and bringing it all together. Take stock of your stash and anything that is broken, missing a part, has a puncture or simply doesn’t work anymore, bin it! Do you or your children still play that sport, use the equipment or have 16 footballs and really only need a few?! Look at selling anything that is in good condition. If you don’t have any sporting equipment around your home then I am sure there is some sporting memorabilia hiding in the back of the cupboard or in the pool room for you to go through! Day 24 - Declutter the Car! Without realising it our cars become a dumping ground for almost anything and keeping them clean on the inside can become a challenge. From empty bottles, food packets, toys, parking tickets, sporting equipment, the list is long! To get your car’s interior back into shape, completely empty your glove box, boot (trunk), centre console and any other storage areas. Sort items into rubbish, what really needs to live in the car and what needs to be put back in its rightful home. While you are at it give your car some love with a good wash and vacuum. Day 19 - Blitzing the Bedside Tables! Bedside tables are great for storing anything and everything including items you can’t be bothered putting away! In other words they can easily become a junk drawer (or set of drawers!). Any plastic containers you have left over from your plastics purge make great drawer compartments for loose bits and pieces. Pull everything out of your drawer/s and bin any rubbish, put away anything that doesn’t belong and only keep the essentials (e.g. reading glasses, hand crème, loose change, journal, pen and paper, any nightly medications and so on). The top of your bedside table (night stand) should only have a reading lamp, book, alarm clock and glass of water on it. For any toy, book or puzzle that is broken, missing pieces or beyond repair, these items need to be thrown out or recycled. Anything that the kids have outgrown can be donated, sold or passed on to friends. The quickest way to go through this is to check the use-by-date on each of your medications. You will be amazed how much you throw out and how old some of it is. Day 14 - Utensils, Bakeware and Appliances We all have drawers full of utensils promising to make our cooking prep time easier. But we more often than not use our trusty old favourites and leave our expensive gadgets untouched. Now is the time to sort and either donate, sell or recycle any utensils you don’t use (or remember what they promised to do!). Cheap cutlery trays (or any of your spare plastic containers) make great drawer dividers for your utensils. Store like-items together. Do the same for your bakeware and if you are no longer a baker donate, sell or recycle unused items. While you are at it sort your electrical appliances. Day 13 - Putting the Pantry Right! The back of pantries are great hiding areas for expired food and items you forgot you bought! Empty the entire pantry onto your kitchen bench, putting foods in to like-sections (i.e. baking, canned items, cereals, etc). You will be amazed just how much your pantry can hold (half of which you probably don’t use). Ask yourself if you really need to keep such a great stock of items? Anything that is expired can be binned immediately. Decant any packaged food into airtight containers (stacking containers are great if you are tight on space). Label shelves/drawers so everyone knows where to put things away. Don’t forget your spice cupboard too! How many spices did you find out-of-date? One of mine was dated back to 2006! Day 12 - Pretty up your Purse or Wallet! Those good old loyalty reward cards love filling up our purses and wallets. Like everything there is an app for storing them - Stocard (and you will never be without them with your phone by your side!). So download the Stocard app, start scanning your loyalty cards and bin them once done. Take out old receipts, sort and keep them only if necessary. Day 11 – Purge the Plastics! Probably one of the most used drawer/s in your home and almost always the most disorganised! Pull out all of your plastics and make sure every container has a lid and is not cracked or broken. I store like containers and sizes together as a nest. The lids I store on their side in one spare rectangular container for easy access. Lids with no containers can be recycled immediately but hold on to any spare containers as they make great drawer compartments in other areas around your home. Day 8 - Crazy about Crafts! “I’ve come to the conclusion that buying craft supplies and actually using them are two separate hobbies”. I love this saying and how true it is! If you are the type of person who loves the idea of making anything from scrapbooks, gift cards, knitted items, homemade goodies, kid’s crafts, and are brilliant at buying craft products but never actually using them, then this challenge is just for you! Get out all your craft/sewing supplies and yes I mean get it all out! You will be amazed at just how much you have accumulated. If you have projects that you have been holding on to for that perfect rainy day but years later it just hasn’t come around, chances are you are never going to make/create it! Sort your supplies into groups (e.g. stickers, paint, beads, paper/card, glitter, glue, scissors, fabric, wool, etc) and work out what you/your children will actually use. Clear plastic food containers or old jars with screwon-lids are great for storing craft supplies – you can easily see what items you have without little pieces escaping! Day 7 - Toss the Toiletries and Cleaning Products! Just how many shampoos, soaps, body washes, moisturisers and toothbrushes do you have lurking at the back of your bathroom cupboard? We often forget what is in there. Most toiletries have a 12-month shelf life so if it has been in there longer than that bin it. Same goes for all of those half-filled bottles – either combine them into one or bin them (recycle where possible). To stop the clutter returning, don’t take the mini hotel toiletries or samples from department stores. While you are on a roll, sort out your cleaning products. How many carpet cleaners, shoe polishes for shoes that you no longer own, potions promising to make your sink and floor shine, etc do you have? Again, if they have been in the cupboard unused for more than 12-months you are likely to never use them – so bin or donate them. Day 6 - Moving on your Make-Up! How much skincare and make-up do you have claiming it will take years off your appearance? How many lipsticks and eyeshadows do you really need? Remember liquid products, once opened, should be used within 6-months and other products 12-months. So, if you have items that have been in your cupboard/drawer for longer than that, bin them! Be ruthless and ask yourself does this colour lipstick or blush really suit me? Why not swap with girlfriends any products that are in good condition and you no longer use (and you probably spent a fortune on!). Day 5 - Clear the Kitchen Bench! This is my husband’s pet hate and as much as it shames me to admit it I am very guilty of using our island bench as a dumping ground for kid’s homework, mail, my endless lists, a few purchases and so on! This year I made a pact that I would keep the kitchen bench clear – so far so good! The only things that really need to be on your kitchen benches are your everyday kitchen appliances (kettle/coffee machine, Thermomix if you have one, knife block) and fruit bowl. Day 4 - Streamlining Your Stationery Stationery has a way of easily getting out of control, especially if you have children and reorder new sets each school year! The quickest way of streamlining your stationery is by sorting items in to piles of like items - i.e. pens, pencils, markers, staplers, notebooks, sticky notes, paper, sticky-tape, rulers, etc. Anything that is broken, ripped, dried out or outdated can immediately be recycled or put into the bin. Containers (think old plastic/takeaway containers), trays, or drawer dividers (even old cutlery trays) are great for storing similar items together and you can see what you have at a glance. If you have old filing cabinet drawers consider using the suspension files to store everyday stationery items such as printer paper, file dividers tabs, plastic pockets, etc. Easy to see what you have and super easy to access. For frequently used items, keep them within arm's reach on your desk or in a designated drawer. I personally try to avoid desk caddies as they end up being great junk accumulators. Where possible just have one pencil pot/jar to store frequently used items (i.e. pens, scissors, highlighter), and store excess items within your desk drawer, on a bookcase or shelf. Feel Good Tip - have an oversupply of stationery?
