National Park No. 11 ✅ #channelislandsnationalpark #santacruzisland did not disappoint! A 1 hour boat ride from Ventura lands you on the beautiful practically untouched island. I hiked the trail #montanonridgelooptrail which takes you through the center of the island and then finishes high on the cliffs above the shoreline. Hiked through rock and long grass. Warm air and ocean breezes made for a perfect day. Was alone most of the time until closer to viewpoints. It was a beautiful day ☀️. I ventured the East side of the park and #hiked #highpeakstrail and #beargulchcave #beargulchreservoir The park has its own #microclimate where temps seemed to fluctuate randomly 20degrees throughout the trail. Forty-fifth hike of the year. Hiked with my best friend, Christine! SO proud of her! We did Pine Meadow and Stony Brook trails. Way too hot outside, so we stopped and dipped our feet for a few minutes. 💦 Few people passed us kept saying a mamma bear and her cubs were near Russian Bear (how fitting) and growling at them. Thirty-seventh hike of the year. Hiked 5.5 miles via White Bar, TMI, Blue Disc, and Kakiat. Hiked with Jen. Did a ton of clippings, but still needs to be attended to. Thirty-sixth hike of the year. Hiked 2.3 miles to Bradley Mine with Jen. Been wanting to do this for a good minute; today seemed like a good day for it. Parked at Tiorati and hiked up the Blue trail where the AT meets. Took Arden Valley Road for the rest of the way until we cut through to a herd path up that led us to the mine. We saw a bad motorcycle accident off Arden Valley Road; waiting for an ambulance. Hope he was okay. Conditions were dry. Always love how the temperature drops when you approach the mine. I FINISHED HARRIMAN STATE PARK! Thirty-fourth hike of the year. Hiked 5.7 miles with Dawn, Robert, Jared, and Lori. Second largest state park, Harriman has been like my baby, and what made this hike even more special was that I ended on Victory trail, had wonderful friends with me, AND this is part of the section I supervise for the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference. Dawn brought the tutus, and Robert handed me down a hiking book. Robert also sent me a screenshot of when I started thinking about this challenge which was December 1, 2021 (which is cool to reflect on). Thirty-third hike of the year. Hiked 16.0 miles with Jen. We hiked the 5 sisters!! Dunderberg Mountain, Bald Mountain, Bear Mountain, West Mountain, and The Timp. This was an amazing but exhausting hike. My longest hike to date. Been wanting to do this for a really long time and happy I finally did it! The trials were dry, including the streams and creeks. Nothing really to report. No blowdowns. Bear Mountain was beyond packed by the time we hiked to the main lot. We hit the Major Welch trail and considering we were almost at mile 7, *this* was the trail that put the nail in for me. We saw the plane crash, two snakes, a beetle that looked like an alien, and an unknown animal that ran when it saw us towards the end. Twenty-eighth hike of the year. Hiked about 5.3 miles. Special thanks to Dawn and the “Sunset Chasers” for volunteering tonight to help clean up the Blue Disc trail. There was about 10 of us and we started at the beginning of the trail, to AP, Claudius Smith’s Den, and back. The amount of broken glass was more than we realized and mind boggling! Even found an old glass bottle of Canada Dry, but couldn’t find the year listed on it. After cleaning up a bit, we stopped for the sunset at Claudius Smith’s Den. The trails were in good condition and very dry. The re-blazing of the Blue Disc is coming along really nicely and much better shape than it originally was (thanks, Kami!). A few branches here and there that were easy to clear. Other than that, everything was great, and I hope to organize more events soon. Twenty-sixth hike of the year. Hiked 2.3 miles off the AT and blue trail to Anthony’s Nose for a sunset hike with Jen on Friday! Haven’t seen Jen in so long, and met her at the trailhead on my way home from work. Happy we decided to get together even if it was quick. Jen and I are adventure buddies: skydive, polar bear plunge, hang gliding, flying a plane, etc. Trying to figure out our next exteme activity for 2023 😎 The trails were dry, but there was a section off the AT that was a bit muddy. Made it a bit tricky going down. It was humid out tonight; which felt like a blessing and a curse. Bugs weren’t so bad either considering I forgot to apply spray. Ran into a few people on the trail from different groups. Met Erica, Annie, and Kaye. Ironically, I’m leading a cleanup on the trails with Annie and her group on June 4th in my section of Harriman that I supervise. It reminded me of how important it is to take care of our trails. Twenty-fifth hike of the year. Hiked 12.1 miles off the Long Path with Kami and Logan! Logan did awesome 🐶 We finished section 7 of the LP AND finished the LP in Harriman. One more hike to go in Harriman, and I will have completed all the trails in the park 💪🏻 On a side note, Kami maintains in my section of Harriman. Specifically, on the Blue Disc trail, and she has been doing an amazing job at reblazing. Started at Turkey Hill parking. The trails were dry. On top of Torrey Memorial, we noticed a crazy amount of caterpillar nests. Not sure if I have ever seen so many in my life. It was a bit steep going up Howell Mountain and Brooks Mountain. It was cool to see the West Point/U.S. Military signs posted. We eventually hit a gravel road that felt never ending on our feet. Right before ending our day, we had to pass the trestle and the creek. It wasn’t passable, so we took off our socks and boots, rolled up our pants, and crossed in about two feet of water. Twenty-third hike of the year. Hiked 5.6 miles via the Long Path. Cleaned up some parts I still needed for this section. Long Path has been a slow work in progress for a few years now. So far I have sections 1,2, and 6 completed (and some parts in different sections). Needed some of the LP to complete the entire trail conference map challenge. Almost done with that (and Harriman). The trail was overall dry. Started hiking south through South County Mountain Park. I liked this area, it’s pretty for a county park and a small viewpoint. The trees at one point reminded me of something upstate. Turned back and headed north, crossed the ramp off the Palisades Interstake Parkway. The trail over here is a bit noisy because of the parkway, but has some unique parts to it. At one point, you have to walk over a narrow ledge. It’s nothing terrible though, but added to the fun. Twenty-second hike of the year. Hiked 5.0 miles via the yellow and blue trails with Laura! It was so nice meeting her finally. Early morning hike before class today, AND saw my first bear of the season! 🐻 The trails were dry, but some parts of the blue trail were a bit muddy which made the rocks slick. The rocks were also a bit slick at the overlook of the reservoir off the yellow, and parts of the yellow walking back down towards the front of the reservoir were muddy. On the blue trail, we all of a sudden found this big bear walking in the woods, who then just ran across the trail. He didn’t bother us, but it was pretty cool to see him run. Twenty-first hike of the year. Hiked 5.5 miles via the ASB, Stahahe Brook, Nurian, Dunning, and the AT with Todd, who is the Trail Supervisor for Central Harriman. Already completed these trails, but there was some blazing concerns that intersect with my section and his section that we scoped out together. The trails were dry, and well maintained. Some of the Nurian needs to eventually be reblazed that will be a separate work trip, but other than that, everything was great. Spring break is almost over, so glad I was able to do this tonight. The weather was perfect and it reminded me of summer. The trail was dry except for right before Almost Perpendicular. Nineteenth hike of the year. Hiked 3.3 miles via Long Swamp loop. Easter hike 🐣 and a pretty day outside and not a soul on the trail. Ironically, I hiked in Sterling Forest a few Easter’s ago also. The trail is straight forward, marked well, and dry. Most of it almost reminds me of an old wood road. It’s pretty flat and easy to plow through if you’re looking something quick just to get outside. Found an old Army vehicle or storage, not really sure what it is (looks familiar), but I’m sure someone can pinpoint it. It clearly says Army with a star on it, and numbers I can’t make out. Eventually, this will be another park to bag. Slowly started it and it’s a nice park, but Harriman will always be the favorite. Eighteenth hike of the year. Hiked 6.0 miles via the RD, Triangle, and Victory trails. It was so pretty outside today and not as cloudy as I was anticipating which was really nice. Finished the Triangle trail. Almost at the end of my challenge 💪🏻 Started on the RD which was great and worked our way up to Tom Jones. Found some broken glass which will be cleaned up soon. We visited the shelter and saw a handful of people who must’ve camped overnight. Went to Parker Cabin Mountain (one of my faves) off the RD and went back to go down the Triangle trail. The trail was great, nothing to report. Hooked onto the Victory trail by Lake Skenonto where there was a bunch of campers. Visited the old cabins. Found some blowdown right before the RD junction. Overall, the trails we’re really well maintained, but four times we heard abnormal loud sounds on all different parts of Victory. Not sure if it was trees falling, or a new animal friend. Seventeenth hike of the year. Hiked about a mile or so roundtrip via the blue trail for a sunset up Popolopen Torne. Always love seeing the memorial. We were all wearing blue! The trail was dry, scrambles were fun. Nothing really to report except a beautiful sunset and great company. Sixteenth hike of the year. Yesterday we hiked 5.5 miles via the SBM and 1779 trails. Finished the SBM. Went up Irish Potato, Pound Swamp Mountain, Pyngyp, and The Pines. We started off at 106 and hit Irish Potato. The trail was pretty dry, and near Pound Swamp Mountain the rocks were wet. We hit the Palisades Interstate Parkway where there was only a little traffic, so we didn’t wait so long to cross. Went up Pyngyp where some of the rocks were slick, but overall, it was pretty dry. The beautiful weather must’ve helped dry it up from the rain earlier. Some of the glazing is a bit faded, but it’s overall intuitive and didn’t have so much trouble spotting them. The Pines was a steep hike up, and once we hit the 1779 trail, it was smooth sailing to Queensboro. Such a pretty day outside and the climb up Pyngyp was challenging, but nothing horrible. Just need to take your time. Definitely wouldn’t recommend doing it on a rainy day. 📍 Craigleith Provincial Park from sunset to sunrise This small park is close to the Bruce Trail, so I camped here for a night to do back to back hikes. While the park itself doesn't have any hiking trails, it has views like these 😍 I managed to get a site right on the water since it was a Thursday night and have views of both an incredible sunset AND woke up for a gorgeous sunrise as well.
