Met up with @stoopidsmitty for round two. ✌️ We started at his place, hit a gas station and then rolled up Big Cottonwood Canyon to Guardsmans Pass before stopping for a bite at Melvin's in Heber City before parting ways. Gliding into Salt Lake through Parleys Canyon tonight reminded me that it was June 1975 when I first entered Salt Lake City through this grand entrance. This shot was captured thru my windshield at 9:16 p.m. tonight on I-80 westbound just after cresting Parleys Summit (7,120’ │ 2170m). This is the same view that welcomed me 48 years ago. The occasion for being in Park City this evening was to attend the celebration of life for my friend Bill Logan who passed away after a long battle with cancer. He was kind, generous, smart and strong. His wife is a dear friend over many decades who’s always been there for me. Tina hosted a classy party where I also reconnected with many friends that I haven’t seen in awhile. I was also reminded that I set up the trip to Everest Basecamp in 2001 where Tina and Bill first met. I’m grateful for such wonderful loving friends such as Tina and Bill. RIP Bill. You are missed. In 1848 construction of the Golden Pass Toll Road began in Parleys Canyon. Named for Parley P. Pratt, this highway became the primary route into the Salt Lake Valley, surpassing the original route through Emigration Canyon. Parleys Canyon was originally used by a narrow-gauge railway, but the canyon's steep grades made it unable to keep up with competition and it was quickly abandoned. Today some remnants of the railway, namely cuts for the horseshoe curves, are in use by local roads and visible from the shoulder of the freeway. After a burning truck sparked a grass fire in Lambs Canyon, fire crews were forced to close eastbound I-80 to get the incident under control before it could get worse. Some drivers trying to get through the canyon have no choice but to wait as air support drops fire retardant over the area to keep a wildfire from sparking.
