The @cartandhorseslondon in Maryland, Stratford is one of London's most iconic music venues simply due to the fact that @ironmaiden played a lot of their early gigs there and started making a name for themselves in the local Hard Rock scene of the mid to late '70s. This of course eventually led to them getting signed by EMI and undoubtedly becoming one of the most important and influential bands in Hard Rock and Heavy Metal history, an accolade that continues to this very day and shows no signs of ever fading away. The pub is filled with Maiden memorabilia kindly donated for the most part by @steveharrisofficial, and apart from serving as a meeting point for official fan club gatherings and related events, it also receives visitors from all across the world on a daily basis to experience first hand the tiny stage at the pub that thanks to a semi-residency gained all the way back in 1976 ended up being baptized as "The birthplace of Iron Maiden" (their first ever gig was in fact at St. Nicks Hall in Poplar on May 1st, 1976). Currently, bus announcements say "Alight here for Maryland Station" at stops MA, MF, MP, and MB; so rather than having so many stops with the same announcement some Maiden maniacs have come up with the idea that perhaps Transport For London should change it on the closest stops to the pub to "Alight here for Cart & Horses - the birthplace of Iron Maiden", which would not only recognize East London as a pivotal part of music history but would also obviously help non-English speaking fans visiting from abroad find the place a lot easier. Lá em seus primórdios, ainda em meados dos anos 1970, antes de Paul Di'Anno, um outro Paul esteve a frente do Iron Miaden. Se trata de Paul Mario Day, que foi responsável por dar voz à banda durante esse tempo. A revista Metal Hammer conversou com Day, que contou com um pouco de seu período ali: Trabalhei perto de onde Steve Harris morava. Um dia eu o vi na rua e perguntei se ele estava procurando um cantor. Isso foi no final do Gypsy's Kiss, e eles tinham um cantor na época. Logo depois ele disse que me daria uma chance. Meu primeiro show foi em um salão de igreja na frente de cerca de 10 ou 20 pessoas, mas rapidamente conseguimos tocar periodicamente no Cart And Horses todas as quintas-feiras. Tocamos principalmente material original, músicas que acabariam entrando nos dois primeiros álbuns do Maiden, mas também fazíamos covers ocasionalmente. "Eu não era um frontman experiente, e isso acabou contando contra mim. Eles queriam que eu fosse mais 'show business', e eu não sabia como. Eu também queria passar mais tempo com minha namorada e não conseguia folga do trabalho para shows. Então eles finalmente se livraram de mim. Eu emigrei para a Austrália em 1986 e continuo na música, cantando com uma banda cover nos fins de semana." I've seen this show a couple times on YouTube so when I came across the cd last week for 3.99 it was a no brainer purchase. Of course it's not the same as seeing the original line-up but it's an interesting show nonetheless. Andy Scott and Mick Tucker remain from the classic foursome. Paul Mario Day handles the vocals sounding great on some songs but not so much on others. If the name rings a bell he was the original vocalist for Iron Maiden before Paul DiAnno and later sang with the group More. Paul Day é o primeiro vocalista da banda, entre 1975 e 1976, e também foi o primeiro a tornar-se um ex integrante porque, de acordo com Steve Harris, "ele realmente não tinha energia ou carisma no palco". Não existem gravações de sua época no Iron Maiden e sua maior contribuição foi a autoria da música "Strange World", embora oficialmente esta música tenha sido atribuída unicamente a Harris. Após sua saída, Paul esteve nas bandas MORE, WILDFIRE, SWEET e CRIMZON LAKE. Após anunciar sua aposentadoria em 2012, parece ter mudado de idéia, em 2013 assumiu como vocalista do DEFACED. This disc contains 13 tracks by former Maiden band members, including Paul Mario Day, Doug Sampson, Terry Wapram, Barry "Thunderstick" Purnis and Paul Di'Anno. I think all of them came autographed by a random collection of the artists. Although I consider myself quite a decent fan of Iron Maiden (got the majority of their albums, and seen them live half-a-dozen times), if I was asked on Who Wants To Be a Millionaire “who was Iron Maiden’s original singer?” ... I would be coming home with nothing by answering Paul Di’Anno!!! The news was confirmed by fellow Sweet member Andy Scott. In a statement on the band's Facebook page, Scott wrote, "Then there was one! I am in pieces right now. Steve Priest has passed away. His wife Maureen and I have kept in contact and though his health was failing I never envisaged this moment. Never. My thoughts are with his family. "He was the best bass player I ever played with. The noise we made as a band was so powerful. From that moment in the summer of 1970 when set off on our Musical Odyssey the world opened up and the rollercoaster ride started! He eventually followed his heart and moved to the USA. First New York then LA. "Rest in Peace brother. All my love." Priest was born in Hayes, England, and – like many musicians of his era – was influenced by The Shadows before becoming enamoured by the Rolling Stones and The Who. In January 1968, Steve formed a four-piece band with vocalist Brian Connolly and drummer Mick Tucker – former members of Wainwright’s Gentlemen – and guitarist Frank Torpey. When their original moniker of Sweetshop was taken by another band, they shortened their name to The Sweet.
