Today we took on a father son duo. Father (darker) is 2-3 years and son (lighter) is 1½-2½. We offered to take these boys on because the owner was hospitalized after a massive heart attack that caused extensive brain damage and will be hospitalized for an extended amount of time. These guys had nowhere safe to go. The owner had a proper size cage, proper deep bedding and healthy food but lacked all the other necessary elements of care such as clean cage, fresh water, and enrichment such as a wheel, Sand bath, anything to chew on, hides... etc. Moving forward, these guys will not lack for anything. We’ve been absolutely flooded with requests from the public to surrender adult pets in recent months. Last week alone, we received 21 calls and emails regarding adult cats people were hoping to relinquish to our adoption center, some of them for multiple cats. (And it’s not even kitten season yet, when the requests will sometimes hit double-digits DAILY.) The numbers for dogs aren’t far behind. We are a very small facility with available space for only 4-6 dogs/puppies, 15 kittens, and 3-4 adult cats at one time. We can’t possibly intake every animal that folks would like us to accept, nor would we have the financial means to provide medial care, spay/neuter, etc. for numbers of that magnitude. We encourage everyone to make an effort, if you’re able, to rehome a pet you cannot keep yourself before contacting us (or another shelter or rescue). Here are some tips and ideas that can help: • Make sure your pet is up to date on vaccines, and have them spayed/neutered if at all possible. This will make them far more appealing to potential adopters, and will ensure that they’re not creating more pets who will need homes. • Social media (Facebook, Nextdoor, Instagram, etc.) can be an excellent resource for getting the word out. • Let your veterinary office know, too. One of their clients might be searching for a pet just like yours! We’re a nonprofit organization and receive no tax funding. Our ability to help is dependent upon donations from our caring community members. We do everything we can to assist people and pets in need, but we simply can’t keep up with the volume of requests to accept animals that we’re regularly experiencing. Animal Shelters and Care Centers in New York City are facing a massive challenge with more and more New Yorkers surrendering their beloved pets due to financial woes. A supervisor at an Animal Care Center mentioned how at least 40 animals including guinea pigs and rabbits per day are being given up by their owners. Shelters are overwhelmed and find it difficult to maintain the pets, so at least three centers have shut down “cat intakes”. Adoption rates are declining with shelters finding it hard to find adopters and foster parents, thus giving rise to “pop-up kennels” to accommodate the large influx of animals. We are continuing to see high dog intakes, a trend that unfortunately has carried over from last year. 🐶 It was apparent by last spring that this increase was not an anomaly, as national groups were also reporting increases in shelter intakes. This increase has been attributed to rising cost of pet ownership, access to affordable pet friendly housing, and people returning to work as workplaces opened back up. Intakes to the shelter can be reduced by providing resources to pet owners needing help. Last year, our non-profit Gem City Kitties started our Surrender Program for owners looking for ways to re-home a pet. 💔 While we do believe that caring for an animal should be a commitment for the animals' entire lifespan, there are instances where owners have no other choice – and our Surrender Program is the answer. The good news: According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, more than 23 million U.S. households have adopted a pet during the coronavirus pandemic. The not-so-good news: As costs continue to rise, we are seeing an increase in animal surrenders. While the reasons behind surrendering animals varies, we do know that one of the top reasons for surrender is due to financial strain. Taking good care of our pets does come with a price tag: 💰 According to the ASPCA, annual food, supplies and routine medical care cost between roughly $500 and $1,000 for a dog, and $650 for a cat. 💰 Vet care can cost thousands of dollars and is many times an unexpected expense. 💰 Many animals require specialty foods, medications, and vet care especially as they age. We've been noticing an increased amount of comments lately related to the nuances of pet surrender. We felt it might be helpful for us to address this topic with a post rather than just in responses to comments. Surrendering a pet is almost always an incredibly difficult decision to make, and it often has to do with factors that are out of a person or family's control, such as an unexpected loss of a home or income, a medical issue, or many other very real and complex situations. Many times the decision comes down to what is going to be best for everyone involved, their beloved pet included. A sweet ball python that someone dropped off as an owner surrender because they had “outgrown” the snake 😔. They said the snake was about seven years old. He was getting ready to shed when he came in, that’s why his eyes are cloudy in the first pictures. This is a sign that liquid is building up between the eye and the eye cap, which is part of the snake's skin. The fluid helps separate the eye and eye cap so it can release easily. He needed a little encouragement since he was in such new surroundings and already probably feeling anxious. So we gave him a light bath to help loosen the shed and ease his transition. If somebody can give this gentle guy a loving home, you would get one of the nicest snakes! He is very calm and easy to handle. Good morning everyone ☀️ I would like to take this moment to introduce you to one of our newest permanent residents Auriferous, who was recently surrendered with two other leopard geckos. Unfortunately, all three geckos are refusing to eat while on their quarantine period. However, we are positive it is due to their exposure to secondhand smoke. Their enclosures, decor and equipment have all been removed, cleaned and sanitized so we are just patiently waiting while observing their behaviour to make sure there aren't any underlying or worsening issues. Can you spot a curled up gecko in the last pic? Nala is a 2-year-old American Pittbull that was surrendered by her previous owners. Her previous owners had received short notice to find another place to live in, through no fault of their own. With the short notice they were not able to find another place to live that would allow them to bring Nala due to her medium size. One of the cases in which the housing system fails both the dog and her owners! When we learned about Nala’s situation, we immediately found her a foster dad who was experienced with her breed. At the meet & greet, Nala’s playful personality immediately melted his heart and as she was already spayed, he decided to ADOPT Nala right away! When she first arrived at his place she seemed a bit confused and sad, but a day later she was already back to her happy-go-lucky playful personality. She also immediately snuggled up with her new adopted parents on the couch. She is still not completely used to wearing a leash when outside, but she seems to be getting used to it. Although it is very sad for her previous owners to let her go (it was definitely an emotional pickup day!), they made the right decision in having her be adopted to a home that loves her, rather than dropping her off on the street. NOTE: Please, no negative comment about Nala’s previous owners who had no choice but to surrender her. Meet Nala 🧡 and Midnight 🖤 - this girl and boy duo are indoor/outdoor cats who are very sweet, but definitely border on the shy side. They are both already fixed and chipped, but they caught the attention of a friend of mine because they appeared to be rather skinny and very hungry all the time. She spoke to the owner who, for certain reasons, expressed that they no longer wanted to keep the cats. My friend asked for assistance so I stepped in to help, and the owner agreed to surrender the cats if we would transport them to a rescue. We got them into carriers with only minor difficulty, and @jmcatlady agreed to hold the cats until they could be brought to a rescue organization in Delaware, found by @poesrescuefund. If this sounds familiar, it's because they both went to the same place as Harvey (the cat from the previous post). In fact, the three cats all went together the same day. Knox and Envy! Well this was something we didn’t think we would need to do but I’m actually happy that knox now has a companion as I think he was sad after leaving his family. Knox has been without other foxes and has spent personal time with me. As soon as his attitude changed it was unfortunately at the same time Ash passed. So we decided to bite the bullet and see how this would go. Usually I like the foxes to get a little more personal with me before the transfer but this ended up going perfectly. No wire was set up to separate them… he was just set inside! Knox is like woah more foxes 🤣 meanwhile Envy is like yay another friend ! **Not up for adoption yet.** Update on Trippy: Trippy is definitely showing promising signs of improvement. She is gaining weight, very slowly. Her balance is getting better than before. She likes to follow me all around the house and demand food. She likes to be on her own, generally ignore all other cats and my dog. 😂 Yesterday, while I was cleaning her cage, I went out to get some stuff and I returned to find her perching on top of her cage! Definitely the first huge step for her... It makes my heart jump in joy! 🥳 I also noticed, she has started grooming herself, ever so slightly. She still needs help with regular brushing, but her hair was bothering her overall, so I had to give her a trim, quite a shabby job, but hey! I NEED A NEW HOME! Toaster aka Lil Ket aka Cat needs a new home. We've had her since she was 8 weeks old and now she's 2. She's playful, quiet, and only wants to be touched when she wants to be touched lol. She's gentle with kids but hates dogs. ATTENTION: Please don’t ever do this! Early this morning someone left a carrier with a mom cat and two kittens behind some bushes outside the clinic. On a day that’s going up to 90° degrees, with no food, no water, and not even somewhere the staff would see them. Luckily, one of our clients decided to take their dog for a walk before checking in, came across the carrier, and immediately let us know. Thanks to them, we brought this little family inside, got them food and water, and contacted Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control,, who’ll be coming by to pick them up, evaluate them, and get them into their foster/adoption program. They’re understandably scared but basically friendly; the kittens have eye infections but those can be treated. Most importantly, they’re going to be ok, on a day that could have ended a very different way. If you have (or found) pets that you can’t keep, please don’t abandon them! There are great organizations in our area with all sorts of programs and resources to help out in just this situation. Sometimes people are worried places will simply euthanize any pet brought to them - that’s not the case anymore. I received this message a few nights ago and honestly haven’t had the heart to reply. I think about Simmy every day and it still breaks my heart that I had to give him up. Unbeknownst to this women, I had found her through a shared photo shortly after she adopted him. She and her girlfriend seem like wonderful people and seeing photos of him in their care let me know that he is being cared for and loved well like he deserves.
