Does nature have a purpose for everything? I asked myself that question when I observed “Sword Billed Hummingbirds” at El Canto, Colombia. Why did nature of the force behind nature give this one hummingbird such a long beak? Imagine flying with such a beak and navigating around trees, branches and other birds? In a weird way, I sort of feel sorry for the Sword Billed Hummingbird, but also admired them for their ability to adapt and thrive with such a long beak. They use their long beaks to feed on the nectar of flowers with long corollas peculiar flowers. A corolla is the reproductive organs of a flower. Other hummingbirds cannot reach the nectar of these flowers. Another question I asked myself is “How does this hummingbird preen and scratch itself with that long beak? The answer is they only use their feet to scratch and preen. Sword Billed Hummingbirds are also excellent pollinators due to their foreheads coming in contact with pollen and this allows them to transfer the pollen from one flower to another. Their tongues are also specially designed to reach deep into flowers and extract nectar. There are two grooves that allow them to sample nectar from the base of the flower and up along the sides. It seems like nature had a purpose for giving this hummingbird such a long beak. If they did not have their long beaks, it would be difficult for the plants they feed on to prosper within their ecosystem. The administration of The New School sent police to campus in the early morning hours yesterday to arrest students who were still sleeping. They did not give the students any warning, who were not blocking access to the building ,and did not allow students to leave, if they chose to. At least 40 students were arrested. I have 80 students across two undergrad and postgrad subjects, three contracts and no office. One of the things I teach on is feminism and recently I gave a lecture on decolonial feminism where I spoke about Palestine and drew from Eve Tuck and K Wayne Yang's "Decolonisation is not a metaphor." Indeed it has no synonym. It is not an "and", an add-on to make someone's academic career sound edgy without them ever taking on real risk. It is an elsewhere we make into reality through things we actually do now. Sovereignty never ceded. Not on these Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lands. The San Juan Airport was very strange on arrival. Filled with desperation and relief. Photographers, we sure are unique and special kind of human beings, even the might NFL recognizes that! 📸🏈😂 Detroit certainly threw a massive party for the 775,000 people that came to downtown Detroit for an amazing 3 days during the NFL Draft. From hunting and seeking out the best visuals, moments and the experiences, it was an event I and so many others will never forget. Sometimes I stopped and pushed the record button in my brain to absorb everything going on around me. Growing up here I thought we as a city would never be able to get it together to get a big event like this and pull it off to be the massive success it was.
