Another one of my poems, "Goodbye, Kiralina", is now live over at @hyacinthreview , and this one is very important to me. (Read a short extract on the second slide, the rest on their website.) It was inspired by all of the stories my maternal grandmother, Maria (third slide), used to tell me about her childhood as the (technically, second) oldest of five (?) siblings. Her mother was ethnically Hungarian, her father Romanian. I remember being told this: that my great-grandfather got really upset with my great-grandmother when he found out that my grandmother had been learning Hungarian from her maternal grandparents, and that he forbade her from speaking it. That at one point they were so poor she only had one toy, a handmade ragdoll named Chirana, which she lost forever when she secretly slid it into my great-grandfather's knapsack as he was taking wheat grain to the mill to be ground into flour. That my grandmother's favourite book (as an adult) was "Kira Kiralina", a novel by Romanian author Panait Istrati, about cultural/ethnic tensions, domestic violence, abuse, and queer attraction. In Hungarian, "anya" is a word for "mother", "nagymama" means "grandmother", and "viszlát" means "goodbye". #poetrywithoutborders #poetryisresistance #poetryiscommunity

You can now read my poem, "Stuffed Vine Leaves", over at @hyacinthreview . It's a poem exploring nostalgia and identity through the theme of food and cooking. Stuffed vine leaves are a very popular traditional Romanian dish, and my mum makes it for me every single time I go to visit. But variations of this dish can actually be found across many different cultures and cuisines, which makes it a great symbol for the complexity of identity. We do not exist in a vacuum, and dishes like stuffed vine or cabbage leaves stand testament to the wonders of migration. This week we celebrated Indonesia Poetry Day that annually falls on 26 July, the birthday of Chairil Anwar. We feel blessed to be able to commemorate it by giving a poetry workshop. Glocal heroes @civicleicester are releasing a new poetry anthology. It's called Poetry and Settled Status for All. In their words: "The anthology will explore themes that include lived experience of being a migrant or seeking refuge in Britain and the Irish States, migrant or refugee experiences of rural and urban life, education, housing, work, healthcare, immigration and asylum systems, and the hostile environment as well as calls asking Britain and the Irish States to give settled status or indefinite leave to remain to all who are here who need such leave." Bleeding out of empty hands. I wrote this mid-panic attack. It definitely being the worst one i've ever had. Hallucinations, loss of time-sense, basically the equivalent to a trip gone bad. Perception really is everything. As an empath, being someone who takes on the emotions and perceptions of others, it gets hard to know where you stand. I'm determined to do what's right no matter what this world tells me and i'll always be there for the broken and feeling. Her work has appeared in or is forthcoming from The Rumpus, Inverted Syntax, Tupelo Quarterly, The Seventh Wave, Mantis, Posit, and others. She has completed three artist residencies: Greywood Arts in Killeagh, Ireland; Brashnar Creative Project in Skopje, Macedonia; and Bridge Guard in Štúrovo, Slovakia.
