Watch him search for the food. I did a simple puzzle tonight. There are two prey items. A small fuzzy mouse my hognose wouldn't eat, and a small day old quail. The quail is hidden under the ceramic plant pot. The key is to come from underneath. He eventually figured it out. The mouse is hidden elsewhere, in his hammock between the layers. We'll see if he figures it out too. The only hard part is filming. His enclosure has grown in so thick that it becomes difficult to film. EPIC FEEDING PUZZLE Admittedly I made this one just a tiny bit too hard. He got about 85% of the way but was stumped and after about 2hours he gave up. But I'm still proud of him for what he figured out. These are not dumb creatures with only base instincts like so many people believe. Next time I'll put two smaller prey items, one right behind the wall where he didn't quite get, and the other at the destination. I also have a few other puzzle feeding ideas using this old plexiglass case. I think I'll do one where I stand it upright and attach a tube over the hole in the back leading to the prey, then I'll stack some branches to make a jungle gym to let him climb up to the hole. Today I offered the ratsnakes a novel food item: mini chicken eggs! Ratsnakes are called “chicken snakes” in some parts of the country as they hang out in chicken coops and are keen to gobble down a few eggs here and there, and may occasionally try to eat chicks and poults as well. But they also eat rats that carry disease and eat and poop in livestock feed, so I would consider it a fair trade. They will also climb trees to raid bird and squirrel nests, and often take refuge in bird boxes and nest cavities after consuming the residents. I have been feeding the ratsnakes with “puzzle boxes” for nearly two summers. Having to track down their food using only scent cues keeps them entertained and active, lets them use their brains and engage in natural behaviors, and is just more interesting than me just handing it to them on tongs. Despite having never seen or smelled an egg before, she knew it was food and was very interested and excited, but couldn’t quite figure out how to eat it. She tried several methods of holding it or pinning it inside her box, but in the end it was just too slippery and she couldn’t get her mouth around it far enough to get leverage, even though it was definitely small enough for her to eat. She tried for nearly two hours before giving up. Her sister on the other hand gave up on hers after just five minutes! They both got two mice in addition to this entertaining treat, so they didn’t go hungry. Thought the little lady looked pretty good recently so was relieved to see "3.8" on the scales on Friday! 🎉 She was 4.4kg when I first met her as a stray cat 2 years ago (it was very surprising her owner wasn't found!), then went down to 4.2kg but at last is under 4! Cat Behaviour #wordoftheweek 🐱 I'll be honest, Pica isn't one of the things I find particularly interesting to talk about..... However, that doesn't mean it's not important to know about 😹 People can show a disproportionate level of concern with cats when they lick, chew or tear things, which for the most part is not an issue for the cat, just the owner and their possessions. The real problematic behaviour is those cats that chew and consume none edible materials. Often this is fabric, Pica is colloquially known as 'wool sucking' because that is often the preferred material for a cat with Pica, however the cat can target any number of materials. There is no definitive reason as to why Pica occurs, there may be a genetic component to it with some cats but there is also the consideration that some cats may just really enjoy it. It may be highly reinforcing for some cats. People frequently attribute a wide range of behaviours to being weaned from their mothers too soon and while this may/may not have an impact on Pica, in other behaviours, such as kneading, we are finding out that that isn't necessarily the case. The dangerous problem with Pica sufferers is that cats cannot digest complex materials such as wool or other fabrics and this can lead to blockages which is very concerning and may require veterinary intervention. There is no 'fix' for Pica but providing an abundance of other stimulation, e.g. Puzzle feeders and toys, is know to greatly reduce the occurrence of Pica behaviours. Seeing people feeding their cats all lined up in a row makes me tetchy! 🙈 It’s understandable though, as we are a social species who enjoy eating around the table together, tucking into different plates of this and that. Unfortunately, it’s really not the same for cats! 🔶 Food is the ultimate important resource for cats – they need to fulfil their nutritional needs to survive. Even feral cats that live together in family groups hunt and eat separately. 🔶 Cats typically need to ingest several small prey items per 24 hours to meet their needs but not every hunt is successful, so this amounts to a lot of time spent sourcing their food. Being fed twice a day from a bowl doesn’t even come close to what cats are naturally designed for. 🔶 @zoethefriendlypetnurse has a great campaign on her website urging cat owners to “Think Outside the Bowl” when it comes to feeding, with lots of info on puzzle feeding. ⚠️ Inappropriate feeding routines can lead to overeating, obesity, frustration and other behavioural issues. Obesity will in turn reduce the cat’s ability to partake in natural behaviours including climbing, hunting, exploration and play. ❌ Feeding multiple cats together can result in bolting of food and overeating, anxiety and conflict between cats.
