With you Wednesday Modelling behaviour is something that we discuss a lot with parents – it is one of the cornerstones of the relationship we have with our children. When we remember that behaviour is communication, it is easy to see how our own behaviour may or may not inform our children in the way we intend or expect. Talking to our children is one of the many ways we communicate with them – as is listening – properly to what they are trying to tell us, hearing what they are saying, validating and normalizing their thoughts and fears, rather than simply trying to think of a response, or diving in to “solve mode”. This means setting aside time to sit with them (without interruption – mobile phones away!!) – when we do this, we send a clear message to our children that we value our time with them. When we look to communicate with compassion, our children likewise learn to communicate in this way. #withyouwednesday #parents #children #remembertobreathe #consciousparenting #youngchildren #parentingsupport #learningtogether #modelingbehaviour #kindness #reachingout #compassionatecommunication #respectfulparenting #respect #respectforothers #modellingbehaviour #makingchoices #cityofbath #lovebath #beautifulbath #thisisbath #bathsomerset #bathlife #loveforsomerset #somersetday #bath #somersetlive #bathcity #bathsom #visitbath

Top Tips for modelling behaviour to our children: • Remember that our children learn more from the way we behave, than from what we tell them. Remembering that our children look to us as their primary role model means we have to reflect on how our behaviour informs and teaches our children. Let’s try to always bear in mind that behaviour=communication. • If we want our children to be kind, we need to model kindness. If we hold up politeness as important, this is how we need to be with others. If we want our children to be emotionally literate, this is something we need to coach them how to become. • When we model consistent boundaries and limits to our children, it allows them to feel secure as they are able to predict our responses. • At the end of the day, we want our children to be able to take responsibility for their own lives and to make decisions that work for them. This means we need to coach our children rather than try to constantly solve problems for them. When we model this behaviour to our children, we send the powerful message to them that we trust them to make wise choices, as well as the knowledge that making mistakes is ok. #toptipstuesday #children #learning #education #parents #families #parentingtips #earlyyears #dailyparenting #problemsolving #responsibility #emotioncoaching#parentingcanbehard #giveitago #raisingkids #positiveparenting #talkingtochildren #consciousparenting #kindness #kindnessmatters #compassionatecommunication #respectfulparenting #respect #respectforothers #modellingbehaviour #makingchoices

Growth Motivation for the Week... Setting loving boundaries… In the last growth motivation post we looked at how blame is a distraction – a negative behaviour that we mistakenly think is protecting us but, in reality, takes us away from our truth! One resource that does protect us in a healthy way is our ability to set loving boundaries. In this way, when others make mistakes with us, we can honour our true selves by putting a line in the sand and saying “no further, no more”, expressing it with love out of RESPECT for ourselves, the other, and the connection between us. How easy is setting loving boundaries for you to do? - If you can set them, how do you do it? What’s your process? What are the benefits? - If you can’t set loving boundaries, why not? What do you need to receive, or to be in place, in order to practice it more? - What have you discovered about yourself that is new here? If any of this is challenging for you and/or you would like help, don’t hesitate to ask for it from a PRH practitioner. PRH (Personality and Human Relationships) is an international School of life-long learning to discover and embody who you truly are and what your purpose is, both for your own deepest fulfilment and for the benefit of our global environment and for all of humanity and its evolution. It offers many different resources to support and encourage you. Hi everyone, I’m Grace and I want to share with you how DramaWay has made a really positive impact on my life. I've been part of DramaWay for about 12 years now and it’s been such a fun experience! I started attending DramaWay’s Drama program when it was held at ErinoakKids back at their old Mississauga site. I remember the days of attending the Drama camps and movin’ and groovin’ with the music therapist and our Founder, Danielle. I’m currently attending the Social & Life Skills program, where I am learning to manage my emotions, prepare for the workforce and work on my independent living skills. Outside of my involvement with DramaWay, I'm also super engaged in my community. I volunteer at a preschool three days a week, where I get to interact with children and help out in various ways. I also attend a day program twice a week, where I help other participants and contribute positively to the community. I really feel like all the skills I’ve developed in DramaWay, like empathy and respecting others, have made me a stronger volunteer and community member. DramaWay has truly changed my life for the better. So much so that my Dad agreed to serve as one of the Board Members! Cool, right? Well, all this to say, I'm so grateful for everything DramaWay and “D” has done for me, and I look forward to every new class, and of course the Showcase in June. Peace Out! Top Tips Tuesday Some useful tips when observing children: • Put aside some time – it doesn’t need to be a huge chunk of time – 15 minutes or so – to simply write down everything we see our children doing at that given moment • Slow down, and allow ourselves to really focus on what is happening • Minimise distractions • Situate ourselves on the sidelines to carry out an observation • Focus on the process, not the outcome • When we have written down what we have witnessed, ask ourselves if we made a judgement, or drew our own conclusion as to what we saw • If there is time, check in with a child – ask them to tell us what went on #toptipstuesday #children #learning #education #parents #families #parentingtips #earlyyears #dailyparenting #problemsolving #responsibility #emotioncoaching #parentingcanbehard #giveitago #raisingkids #positiveparenting #talkingtochildren #consciousparenting #kindness #kindnessmatters #compassionatecommunication #respectfulparenting #respect #respectforothers #observationintheclassroom #observingyourchild #observation

This so resonates with me! French writer and philosopher Simone de Beauvoir is often heralded as a pioneer of the feminist movement thanks to her book “The Second Sex,” which critiques the restrictions a patriarchal society puts on women. But De Beauvoir was concerned with more than one kind of freedom. She worked for the French Resistance during World War II, and later lent her influence to the student activist movements of the 1960s and the anti-Vietnam protests of the 1970s. These words spring from her novel “The Blood of Others,” which pulls from De Beauvoir’s own experience witnessing the suffering of refugees. She reminds us that we all deserve the freedom to be and live as we choose — indeed, it is a basic human right. #personaldevelomentjourney #personaldevelopmentcoach #personaldevelopmentjunkie #personaldevelopment #freedom #respectforothers #simonedebeauvoir

Top Tips Tuesday Some top tips on encouraging positive risk taking: • Search for ways to offer up opportunities that allow for children to feel they are playing on their own. By being close by, but out of sight, it allows our children to feel more independent. • Trust in what we know about our own children. All children develop at their own pace – let’s not push our children too far, too soon. Another important consideration, is to check in as to whether we offer more independence and more opportunity for risky play, to boys rather than to girls. • Plan with our children – involve them in discussion about planning for. and taking part, in risky play. When children understand different steps involved, they learn to weigh up risk for themselves. Open up general conversations about safety, asking for their opinions and thoughts. • Allow children to try out new risks in small steps – for example, when our children want to learn about fire - show them how to strike a match, then get them to light candles, before moving to building and lighting a small fire bowl in a sandpit and then to a fire pit itself. #toptipstuesday #children #learning #education #parents #families #parentingtips #earlyyears #dailyparenting #problemsolving #responsibility #emotioncoaching#parentingcanbehard #giveitago #raisingkids #positiveparenting #talkingtochildren #consciousparenting #kindness #kindnessmatters #compassionatecommunication #respectfulparenting #respect #respectforothers

Top Tips Tuesday Some top tips on encouraging turn taking: • Hold on to what you know to be true – children do not understand the concept of “sharing” under the age of 3 and half/four years of age. When we accept this developmentally, it means we can avoid forcing children to do something that is beyond their natural capabilities • Teach the idea of delayed-gratification. Practising impulse control – waiting our turn, rather than grabbing at something, helps children understand the idea that their turn will come, and that they can exert control over their own actions • When we establish rules on turn taking, it allows children to see the rules as being fair and understandable. It wouldn’t cross our minds to snatch something from another adult – or to view an adult working on something for a long time, as selfish – yet parents can be made to feel awkward about allowing the same for their own child • When a child knows that they can say “I’m not done yet” – it gives them a little bit of control in a world where they often feel they have little! When children are “all done”, they will, more often than not, willingly hand over whatever they were playing with. • If different rules about long turn taking are necessary on occasion – explain this to a child beforehand – if they know that “I’m not done yet” is the norm, they will be far more accepting of where this just isn’t possible #toptipstuesday #children #learning #education #parents #families #parentingtips #earlyyears #dailyparenting #problemsolving #responsibility #emotioncoaching#parentingcanbehard #giveitago #raisingkids #positiveparenting #talkingtochildren #consciousparenting #kindness #kindnessmatters #compassionatecommunication #respectfulparenting #respect #respectforothers

Top Tips Tuesday Top Tips to remember about an apology: • Keep it simple – it may sound obvious – but say sorry for what we have done and leave it there – no buts…….!! As soon as we try to give an explanation for why we behaved as we did, we are trying to excuse our behaviour, rather than take responsibility for it • Being as honest with ourselves, and the other person, as to the reason for an apology is important. For an apology to be sincere, we have to believe in what we are saying! When we admit what we have done and take responsibility for it, we can, if it is appropriate, then try to make amends by, for example, asking if there is something we can do to try to put it right. • In order to rebuild trust and repair the relationship, it’s important to offer some reassurance that we will try to do better in the future • As the recipient of an apology – we need to try to be gracious in accepting it. If we hold on to resentment, we are not letting in space for understanding or for forgiveness. It may be that we need more time to fully move on – however this can be explained gently if needs be. #toptipstuesday #children #learning #education #parents #families #parentingtips #earlyyears #dailyparenting #problemsolving #responsibility #emotioncoaching#parentingcanbehard #giveitago #raisingkids #positiveparenting #talkingtochildren #consciousparenting #kindness #kindnessmatters #compassionatecommunication #respectfulparenting #respect #respectforothers #powerofanapology #ruptureandrepair

Top Tips Tuesday Some top tips on communicating effectively with our children: • Let’s remember to consider whether the language we are using is understandable and age-appropriate – getting our children to repeat back to us what we have been talking about, can help to remove confusion and assumption – for them as well as for us. Likewise, us reflecting back to our children what we understand from what they may have told us, sends a clear message to them, that they have communicated clearly, and that we understand what they have told us • Using “I” statements, helps children to see that we take responsibility for our own thoughts and feelings rather than simply apportioning blame, with words such as “you never”. “you always”………..It is a part of how we can help our children understand their own emotions. • Let’s remember the power of asking our children to explain things to us – being able to communicate clearly, is a life skill and one which when started young has the power to increase self-belief and confidence. Children love the idea that they may know more than us about a given topic! • Pitch and tone of voice, facial expression, eye contact, the look in our eyes, posture and giving them our full attention (amongst others) are different ways of sending messages to people. We need to consider these when communicating with our children. #toptipstuesday #children #learning #education #parents #families #parentingtips #earlyyears #dailyparenting #problemsolving #responsibility #emotioncoaching#parentingcanbehard #giveitago #raisingkids #positiveparenting #talkingtochildren #consciousparenting #kindness #kindnessmatters #compassionatecommunication #respectfulparenting #respect #respectforothers #respectfulcommunication #effectivecommunication #listening #communication

BLACK HISTORY MONTH FRIENDSHIP IN ADVERSE TMES Jesse Owens (a black American athlete) won gold in the long jump at the 1936 Summer Olympics, and Luz Long, a German athlete, came in second place was Luz Long, a German athlete. After their competition, Luz was the first to congratulate Jesse. They posed together for photos and walked arm-in-arm to the dressing room. Owens said, "It took a lot of courage for him to befriend me in front of Hitler. You can melt down all my medals and cups, and they wouldn't be worth the twenty-four karat gold friendship that I felt for Luz Long at that moment." The two stayed friends after the Olympics. In his last letter to Jesse, Luz asked Jesse to be in touch with his son, Kai, "'to tell him how things can be between men on this earth." Luz Long was killed in action during WWII. After the war, Owens traveled to Germany to meet Luz's son Kai and later served as the best man at his wedding. ‘Above all, don’t lie to yourself. A man who lies to himself and who listens to his own lies gets to a point where he can’t distinguish any truth in himself, or those around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. Having no respect for anyone, he ceases to love... A man who lies to himself can be more easily offended than anyone else. For it is sometimes very pleasant to take offense, isn’t it? And yet he knows that nobody has offended him, and that he has invented the offence himself, that he has lied just for the beauty of it, that he has exaggerated to make himself look big and important, that he has fastened on a phrase and made a mountain out of a molehill—he knows it all and yet is the first to take offense, he finds pleasure in it and feels mightily satisfied with himself, and so reaches the point of real enmity...’ 📖 Dostoevsky, F. 和を以て尊し (わをもってたっとし) - "Harmony is to be valued." "和を以て尊し" is a Japanese proverb that embodies a traditional value emphasizing the importance of harmony. It means "respect and value harmony." In Japan, fostering good relationships and avoiding conflict are highly valued. Therefore, respecting and valuing cooperation and harmony with others is considered virtuous. For example, in schools, clubs, or friendships, it's important to respect each other and get along well. Conflict and discord not only harm relationships but can also have negative effects on oneself and others. That's why it's important to embrace the spirit of "和を以て尊し" and approach interactions with others in a peaceful and respectful manner. #RespectHarmony #HarmonyMatters #JapaneseValues #CulturalWisdom #MutualRespect #HarmonyFirst #UnityInDiversity #RespectTradition #CulturalHarmony #ValueHarmony #PeacefulLiving #CulturalUnity #CulturalRespect #CulturalHeritage #RespectForOthers #HarmoniousLiving #CulturalWisdom #TraditionalValues #Inclusivity #GlobalHarmony #CulturalUnderstanding #DiversityInUnity #MutualUnderstanding #RespectDifferences #EmbraceDiversity #CulturalAppreciation #UnityThroughRespect #CulturalHarmony #CulturalInclusion #CulturalValues

Today is National Leadership day. Leadership is fundamentally about values, and doing what is right rather than what is easy. There are libraries of books on the subject, but at the end of the day it is about the troops under your command - with that as your lodestar you can't go far wrong. Through the Army Reserve your leadership skills will be developed and tested through specialised courses in the Army Leadership Development Programme (or ALDP). In this photo, you can see soldiers from C Sqn on a testing ALDP cadre whilst on deployment overseas. Come join us - develop yourself, and lead others. @the_sherwood_rangers @blackcountrycavalry1 @westminsterdragoonsry @shropshirelightcavalry @welshyeomanry @leicesterlightcav @1deepreccestrikebrigade @3rd_uk_division @theroyalarmouredcorps @britisharmy #yourarmyinlondon #Army #Inspire #learning #LightCavalry #LightCav #military #BritishArmy #ArmyReservist #Yeomanry #RoyalYeomanry #ReservedforMore #FailLearnWin #whatdidyoudothisweekend #courage #discipline #respectforothers #integrity #loyalty #selflesscommitment #combat #resilience #fortitude #challenge #opportunity #growth #futuresoldier #leaders #LondonsLightCavalry

Top Tips Tuesday Some top tips about listening: • Let’s get into the habit of setting specific time aside – on a regular basis – when there are no distractions - to talk as a family, as well as on a 1:1 basis. Asking for our children’s ideas, thoughts and ways of solving issues, on an ongoing basis, allows our children to feel that their opinions are important to us and worthy of consideration • Embrace the idea of listening to understand, rather than listening to respond. We don’t need to have to have the answers to everything – our children don’t need us to solve things for them – they need us to be there to metaphorically “hold” them when they are opening up, and trying to work things through for themselves • When someone gives us their full attention, we can really feel it. We often talk to parents about the idea of “Stop, Drop, Breathe”, in order to put in a pause, so that we can respond rather than react. The idea of stopping, and putting aside anything we are doing, whenever we can, to properly listen when our child is asking us to, will hopefully send them the message that we are there for the big stuff as well as the smaller stuff • Let’s remember to check in with our children, in order to avoid assumption. Reflecting back what we have heard is a powerful way to ensure that we haven’t misunderstood. Adding “am I right?” onto our reflections about what we have heard, is a simple way of doing this. #toptipstuesday #children #learning #education #parents #families #parentingtips #earlyyears #dailyparenting #problemsolving #responsibility #emotioncoaching#parentingcanbehard #giveitago #raisingkids #positiveparenting #talkingtochildren #consciousparenting #kindness #kindnessmatters #compassionatecommunication #respectfulparenting #respect #respectforothers#listening #listeningtounderstand #listeningskills

Teaching your child about inclusion and acceptance is an essential part of helping them understand and value diversity. When children are exposed to different cultures, abilities, and backgrounds, they learn to appreciate what makes each person unique. This understanding fosters a sense of empathy and respect for others. It's important for children to recognize that everyone is different and that these differences are not just okay, but they are what make our world so interesting and vibrant. By encouraging your child to be inclusive and accepting, you're not only promoting tolerance but also teaching them to celebrate diversity. This kind of learning helps them develop into well-rounded individuals who appreciate the rich tapestry of human experience. #hybridgelearning #abatherapy #kidswithautism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #autistickids #autism #inclusion #acceptance #valuingdiversity #teachingtolerance #culturalawareness #empathy #respect #diversityeducation #celebratedifferences #inclusiveattitude #acceptingdifferences #embracediversity #respectforothers #diverseworld #empatheticchildren #understandingdiversity #culturalappreciation #humanexperience

Top Tips Tuesday A few top tips to help children feel mentally strong: • Cultivate a habit of listening from an early age. Let’s remember to put aside time to really listen to our children. When we do this from an early age, about anything and everything, children will trust in the process of sharing how they feel, as they know they are safe and will be “held and heard”. • Let’s remember to empower our children by coaching them and supporting them to find their own solutions. A lot of the time, children don’t want to be “sorted”, they want to be listened to. Emotion coaching helps children to understand their feelings. • Check in and monitor whether children are spending enough time outside in nature, whether they are getting enough exercise and enough sleep, what they are eating and drinking and crucially whether they are having time away from screens. • Encourage our children to try new activities and to find out what it is that they really love to do. Finding something that they love and are good at, is a great way of countering the culture of comparison that so many children are bombarded with. #toptipstuesday #children #learning #education #parents #families #parentingtips #earlyyears #dailyparenting #problemsolving #responsibility #emotioncoaching #parentingcanbehard #giveitago #raisingkids #positiveparenting #talkingtochildren #consciousparenting #kindness #kindnessmatters #compassionatecommunication #respectfulparenting #respect #respectforothers

I grew up back in the day when in Catholic School the nuns could hit you. First with the eraser to the head, then the 15” steel ruler, on its side, to your flat hand, and if you still thought you were a smart guy, you got to go to the Principal’s / Sister Marisita’s office and she showed you the “Paddle”. In second grade, it looked like a baseball bat it was so big. Then they call home and tell your parents they had to hit the “smart kid” so you got hit again.  Let me know if any of this sounds familiar.

Top Tips Tuesday Some top tips to help our children embrace “Acceptance”: • One of the most powerful ways to embed the idea of a child being accepted for who they are, is to avoid comparing them with others. When a child feels loved for who they are and for what they bring to the world, they learn to operate naturally from a position of feeling safe in whatever they may try out. • Let’s remember to talk positively to our children about how we see them. Not just when they have achieved something, but telling them how proud they can feel about how kind, strong, thoughtful, supportive they are. Talk to them about strengths and weaknesses, that we all have them, which is all part of who we are. • Allow our children to see that we don’t “have all the answers”. Talking to our children about how we navigate difficulties and where we feel our own strengths and weaknesses lie, allows them to see that we are not infallible! When we include children in discussions such as this, we can then help them to feel empowered by asking for their input – it’s always great to see the solutions they come up with! • Passing on the wisdom of not being “perfect” is invaluable for a child. It is great for them to see that we make mistakes and that we can learn from them. We love this quote - although we are not sure who it is attributable to? #toptipstuesday #children #learning #education #parents #families #parentingtips #earlyyears #dailyparenting #problemsolving #responsibility #emotioncoaching#parentingcanbehard #giveitago #raisingkids #positiveparenting #talkingtochildren #consciousparenting #kindness #kindnessmatters #compassionatecommunication #respectfulparenting #respect #respectforothers #acceptance #selfacceptance

Top Tips Tuesday Not Top Tips, but top reasons, to reach out for Parenting Support: • We deserve, and our children deserve, to maximise the opportunities that family life has to offer • Knowledge and understanding of child development and what children need, can be what helps us shift from a position of frustration and, in some cases despair, to one where we are able to parent naturally and joyfully • Parenting can feel a tough and lonely place to be. When we reach out for support and realise that we are not on our own, and that we don’t have to have all the answers, it allows us space to pause, and to press reset • Finding the right parenting support for us, at the stage we are at, has the potential to allow us to find balance – one that promotes wellness – emotionally, mentally and physically #toptipstuesday #children #learning #education #parents #families #parentingtips #earlyyears #dailyparenting #problemsolving #responsibility #emotioncoaching#parentingcanbehard #giveitago #raisingkids #positiveparenting #talkingtochildren #consciousparenting #kindness #kindnessmatters #compassionatecommunication #respectfulparenting #respect #respectforothers
