Life is like a Ferris Wheel 🎡, sometimes you’re at the top, sometimes you’re at the bottom but, the real thrill is the journey in between. It’s the essence of life’s dynamic nature, a reminder that ups and downs are integral to the whole experience. They provide lessons and perspectives that contribute to growth. The last year has been a mixture of emotions. My life may look pretty cool from your perspective but, it’s been both exciting and pretty uncertain at times. We tend to share the high moments in life and leave out the lows. Before I left Toronto I went through so much shit that no body even knows, because I chose not to share all the details but, all I knew was I wanted to get away FAST and experience something new. I spent 14 years in Toronto and within 3 months I left it all behind and moved to Kelowna with 3 suitcases of clothing. That’s it! — I got rid of everything that existed in my Toronto life. I’m not sure if Kelowna is home for me but it has reignited my love for teaching fitness & barre and it’s given me space to reconnect and explore my passions… things I set aside or became dormant while living in Toronto. A little about myself. I’m a former classically-trained operatic tenor who has been practicing Ke Ala Hōkū (an ancient form of lomi lomi massage) for over 10 years. I am one of around 400 people in the world to offer Ke Ala Hōkū, also known as The Pathway to the Stars. I became only the 4th of 7 accredited practitioners under my mentor’s, Jody Mountain, 30+ years of teaching this ancient work. She studied under Kahuna Nui Abraham Kawai’i Aua’i’a Maka’i’ole ‘Uliama, who was a Great Master in 9 different lineages. He was the first to bring Ke Ala Hōkū to non-Hawaiians. I am grateful to Jody and Kahu for bringing this into the world and my life. If I’m not constantly doing “the work”, I’m unable to bring “the work” to you. It’s every moment of my life. I’m extremely passionate about this kind of inner work as it has transformed my life to the point that, even in the highest of highs and lows, I feel I’m truly living a dream. I feel everyone has the capacity to do so IF they’re willing to do “the work”. That doesn’t mean it has to be deep, hard, or scary. It can also be very fun, exciting, and exhilarating. I described her an afternoon. “Her home life was always chaotic, coming from a large-large-large joint family, there always were people around, things to do, games to play. And she used to share a single room with other 3 members of her family. But there was a time when it was most quiet, not mornings or nights but the afternoon. Afternoon was when most people were in their rooms, asleep. That was the time she prized the most. She’d never sleep in those hours, making the most of her short-term privacy by indulging into things she liked to do. And she liked to create. She’d have her limited supplies of art but she’d use anything, lipstick, bindi, wedding invitations, anything to craft something. And the most important thing was she wouldn’t create any of those stuff for herself. Most of the times it was always to give it to someone else, parents or some other family member. That act of making and giving was filled with joy and pride for her.” This memory made me cry a bit. It was a happy thing. I was inspired by that little girl, by her innocence, perseverance, her generosity who had so little time and space to herself and she used it to create, to give, to do things she found joy in. There was no social media for validation, it was simply appreciation she felt from others and most importantly herself. / Little girl 1/2 / What was your prized possession as a child? I have a terrible memory, I don’t recall events as clearly as I’ve seen other people around me do. And this is especially true for my childhood. I have vague brief flashes of recollection of certain moments, and people but not much more than that. Sometimes I feel like I’m restarting my life everyday. Recently I started taking therapy for various reasons, but most important of them all was getting to know myself better. Because I feel since I have weak memory I keep finding certain aspects of myself and then immediately forget my discovery and never able to figure out my whole identity. So my therapist asks me questions from my past, to find root causes, patterns for any topic we’ve been discussing. In my last session one thing lead to another and she asked me to describe my little girl self from 6th class. And this is what I remembered- “She was a thin girl of average height, she had short hair with oil in them, very crooked teeth. Since she thought her eyes were too small so she always wore kajal” Next, she asked me to recall a possession I had at that time which was special to me. And I… couldn’t recall anything, at first. I thought hard and tried to remember items kept in my house, but just couldn’t find anything. But then I remembered something else. Something far more special.
