🎶 I got some color back 🎶 2024 has been rough. Mentally. The "meh" days far outnumbered the good days. My favorite hobbies of hiking, and climbing, felt impossible. Prior to last week, I had hiked one mountain all year. And that was in January. I've hiked 16 miles in the first four months of this year. Far less than the first four months of of any year since 2018. My snowshoes never even made it out of my trunk. I'm not really sure what's been going on. My brain and my heart and my soul haven't been communicating. Probably something for a therapist to work out. What I do know, is that I finally made it back to the mountains last week. For redemption on McKenzie in Saranac (last time I was there I smacked an elbow, shoulder, and slightly tapped my head on a rock while nearly falling 30+ feet). It was muddy. It was rocky. But it didn't feel as miserably exhausting as I anticipated. Of the Saranac 6ers, I've only hiked two more than once. This one and Scarface. The least popular, longest, hardest, with the least views. There's no such thing as "bad weather," just bad gear 🤪 ok, sure, monsoons, tornadoes, thunderstorms are definitely not advised to hike in because we're not trying to waste taxpayer dollars or spend a bunch of money and risk SAR volunteer lives on true carelessness. BUT "too cold," rain and other light to moderate weather conditions can definitely be more enjoyable with the proper gear. As long as you have enough layers, the right traction, and a vehicle that can get you too and from the trails, there's likely not too many days that you'd have to "opt inside." One thing Ill never leave home with is my @easternmntnsports thunderhead water proof jacket. Coupled with a set of midweight baselayers and potentially another layer, I'm good to go for almost any adventure. Bring on the type 2 fun! If there's a challenge, ESPECIALLY for charity, you'll rarely see me back down due to some sub zero temps 😋 as part of my belief that hiking is therapy, I encourage every one of you to bundle up and get on a trail. no matter how big or small, even a 20 minute trip through the woods can help you clear your head and be a little more productive. Baker Mountain offers a stunning view any time of year! This hike is located right in town, making it easily accessible to locals and visitors. Summiting Baker can be challenging at any time of year due to its steepness, but it is especially challenging in the winter when its trail is coated in ice and snow. To summit safely in the winter, you need to have traction such as MicroSpikes. If you want to hike Baker in the winter but don’t feel confident doing it alone, we offer a guided experience as part of our Winter 6ers program. Walking into the first Monday of Fall excited for the seasonal shift. Our weather is finally hinting that fall is here. Cool misty mornings on the lakes. Leaves twinging with color. The kids are putting jackets on with shorts! 🤣🤣 But this got me thinking about my hiking backpack. I have been in summer mode for a bit but it’s time to start prepping for shoulder season. Here are a couple of my first adjustments: 🧤Winter Gloves and Hats plus a light weight puffer. Layers are so important this time of year. 💦Remember to still pack ample water! It’s easy to forget to not drink proper water as the temperatures drop. Two of our favorite hydration multiplers are @liquidiv and @tailwindnutrition. Tailwind is great for big hikes where you electrolytes and calories. Liquid IV is my favorite everyday hydration supplement. Both for hiking and home! 🔥My last bonus tip hand warmers. Honestly they are in all my back-packs almost all year. They are a great way to give you a quick boost of heat. Not to mention are a cozy add on to a sleeping bag during cold weather camping. I learned today that Instagram has a 10 image limit for posts, so I am manually cross posting this from Facebook (normally this happens automatically for my account). A challenging but amazing day yesterday! I completed the Saranac Lake 6 as an Ultra; all 5 hikes/6 peaks within 24 hours. Long day; I signed in at 6:35 am, signed out and rang the bell at 1:56 am the next morning. The hike totals were 8720’ elevation change (a new high for me, beat my previous high of 8350’) and 33 miles (also a new high, my previous high was around 25 miles). These are some challenging hikes with great views on many of them. Ampersand is especially great with its 360 degree views. I am sure that St Regis also has great views, but we got to that one after dark. The weather was not cooperative at all! We pushed the hike start from 5 am to 6:30 am to avoid the worst of the predicted rain. That did work for the morning rain, but they did not predict the rain we hit on Ampersand, tail end of St Regis and all of Baker. The rain made life so much harder; lots of mud and unpredictable footing on the trail. We also ended up hiking Baker in the rain at night; not fun. 🙁 The cool thing with the Saranac Lake 6 is that you get to ring the bell at Berkeley Green when you complete the SL6.
