When I woke up the next day, I was a bit disappointed to see that the sky was completely blue with not a single cloud, far from the promised inversion layer. It was too nice and hot to go anywhere, but since I had plenty of time, I didn't want to miss the opportunity to explore another peak. Although I didn't feel very well, my progress on Sentinel Peak was extremely slow, but I finally made it after lunchtime. I had lunch up there, took a siesta, and didn't even take too many photos because everything was too bright in the midday sunshine. Since I was moving slowly, I decided to stay another night in the mice hostel. This time, I was a bit smarter with my food and hung absolutely everything. I wanted pancakes. He made pretty sweet pancakes for breakfast. He wanted to go for a walk. So we climbed a hill and had a snack up top accompanied with some breathtaking views. Then we complained about the sore knees on the way down and threw a few skipping stones in the glassy lake at dusk. This time, I was heading to another peak near Lake Hawea. The weather forecast was perfect, and Monday morning promised low clouds or an inversion layer, so I was thrilled at the prospect of being on the peaks with clouds below me. Anyway, I'll share more details in the next post. On the first day, I walked from Kidds Bush to Sawyer Burn hut, which is a relatively easy and short walk. However, I caught a cold again, so even this easy hike drained a lot of my energy. When I finally reached the hut, it was a welcome refuge, albeit a basic one. It's just a tiny two-person hut with a mouse family and possums around. I fell asleep quickly and didn't properly check if I had put everything in dry bags and hung them up. The mouse family took care of that for me, eating half of my sandwich and my green PVC sitting pad. Good to know that it's edible in case of an emergency. I wanted to break in my new hiking boots before we hike the Kepler next month, so with Wednesday's weather looking so perfect we drove out to The Neck in between Lake Wānaka and Lake Hāwea. We hiked an hour up the steep Sawyer Burn Track to get above the treeline and were rewarded with the most stunning views of Lake Hāwea! (Slide for adorable traffic jam footage 😅🐑🐄🇳🇿)
