Tonight’s horror movie is the Blair witch project, one of my all time favourites!! I know lots of people think it’s overhyped and disappointing, however this film is SO influential AND creates a brilliant atmosphere! There is nothing like watching this film on a cold rainy night in the middle of autumn! Planning on bringing this on holiday with me in a few months to pass the time! Not sure if I have said this before, but found footage is one of my favourite genres of horror with slashers, psychological horror and hauntings (I know basic selection but can you blame me?? They are BRILLIANT) regardless of if you like the movie or not it had a HUGE impact on horror of the 2000s and the marketing was PERFECT! This movie will always put me on edge and Is one of the few horror films that successfully scare me. Absolutely iconic. 296/500 (Rewatch) Evil Dead (2013) ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods. I remember seeing this in theaters and not being too impressed by it, but it’s really grown on me over time. The opening scene is one of the best from the film. You’re set up to believe one thing, but the meaning of the scene changes when the twist is revealed. I thought it was really memorable. For better or for worse, the rest of the film is pretty straightforward. I like Jane Levy, and while I prefer her character in a different Fede Alvarez film, Don’t Breathe, she’s still great here. The gore is over-the-top and ridiculous, but sure to satisfy horror fans. Fans of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead will likely be mixed on this entry, though. I know it’s not really fair to criticize a movie for not being what you wanted it to be, but I really would’ve liked some more comedy in this. I think the very nature of the Evil Dead story lends itself greatly to comedy, so I felt like there were some missed opportunities. If you like splatter horror and are interested in a story very loosely based in the Sam Raimi world, Evil Dead is for you. It’s brutal and gory, but easy to not take too seriously. Recommended. The First Omen (2024) This prequel to the horror classic has some good cinematography, but has a convoluted story and doesn’t really add anything to the lore of the original. I consider The Omen (1976) to be one of the best horror films ever made and one of the things that makes that film so strong is the way it presents supernatural terror in such a realistic way. The prequel really drops the ball in that respect because about 95% of the scares are jump scares that end up being hallucinations. These moments can be really terrifying, but after the jolt they feel cheap and unearned because they aren’t real within the confines of the story. The twist of the story is actually pretty good in the moment, but after the reveal the viewer realizes nothing they have seen up to that point has had any real impact on the ending of the story. It’s a well developed twist, but it completely negates the entire story preceding it and creates a ton of questions. The films stars Nell Tiger Free, who delivers a pretty strong performance. She’s really good in the intense moments of showing genuine terror, but her line delivery can be a bit flat during the more mundane sequences. It’s a very sharp looking film though, with some excellent body horror moments and the on location shooting in Rome produces some gorgeous establishing shots. Given the film’s subject matter of birthing the Antichrist it’s appropriate to have a particularly gruesome birthing sequence and the film certainly delivers a no holds barred scene. The ending didn’t work as well for me. Not only does It appears the film is trying to set up for a sequel even though this is a prequel that lead’s directly to the start of the first film, but it also messes with the lore of the original. It one thing to make changes to a franchise’s cannon to elevate a story, but the whole ending sequence feels really tacked on with the sole purpose for leaving the door open to sequels. The film would have worked much better if it had ended a scene or two earlier. This is a stylishly looking horror film with a couple good scares, but plot holes and the ending weaken it significantly. 49/100 #thefirstomen #nelltigerfree #scaryfilm

Apparently, Spielberg deemed the scene too graphic and he didn’t want to show the audience too much of the shark that early on in the film.
