There are a zillion different versions of ROUTE ZERO. Noone really knows how many the label made. This one is a very simple one on black vinyl and, beside COMPUTECH and TURBOLOID, the only recordings with Pal Erik Carlin. This version was released in 1991 by SYMPATHY FOR THE RECORD INDUSTRY. The tracklist is different from the version that was released in 1989 by STRAIGHTJACKET RECORDS (Happy-Tom's label). The 1989 version has the MC5 song WANT YOU RIGHT NOW on the B-side. This version has COCKWORK and FLOWERBOX instead.

Found a copy of this last weekend. How freakin’ good were the Devil Dogs?!?! Such a great band. I have some old shows I tape traded way back in the 90s on VHS. I should see if they’re on YouTube and if not, I should upload them for the world to see. This is a live record and while I am not the biggest fan of live records, this one is pretty damn good. They do a great cover of the Raspberries’ I Don’t Know What I Want (which was also later covered by Imperial State Electric), and their cover of the Ramones’ Babysitter is rockin’ bigtime! The whole album is darn good and if you’re a fan of the Devil Dogs or just dig nice raw rock n roll, then give this a whirl. Supersnazz - "Diode City" pink vinyl, Sympathy for the Record Industry, 1998. I think I picked this up in the early 2000s when I was scouring the virtual discount bins of eBay. There were tons of underpriced (or at least fairly priced) records listed there that you could grab without feeling like you've just been robbed or without participating in a bidding war. One of my first label obsessions was @sympathyrecords, a local label that was releasing great punk records, most notably for me were the handful of Rocket from the Crypt singles and EPs. In addition to that, they released a lot of female fronted or entirely female bands, and a healthy selection of Japanese bands. Most of what I bought on a whim at that time ended up being exactly what I was looking for. I wanted all flavors of punk, garage, and rock and roll, but bonus points for a not American band and double if it was female fronted. Supersnazz ticked all the boxes, with a great poppy, garagey, punky sound that oozed with energy and joy. A: We Are DEVO” so in belated celebration, here is punk/blues band Claw Hammer covering DEVO’s entire new-wave album. • Why this? … You may ask. I say “Why Not”. Personally, I love cover songs & the bands who play them. Faithful renditions. Fucked up versions. I like them all. They pay tribute to a band’s musical influence. Live they can inspire organic crowd participation: Gang vocals for NYHC covers or whoa-whoa’s for Naked Raygun covers, etc. Cover songs can even introduce u to new bands — the Replacements’ live version of “Another Girl, Another Planet”intro’d me to the Only Ones. & Naked Raygun’s cover of “Suspect Device” at a show at TT the Bears Place, Boston in ‘87 intro’d me to Stiff Little Fingers. • Claw Hammer was formed in late 1980s by Jon Wahl (guitar/vocals [ex-Pontiac Brothers guitarist] & Chris Bagarozzi (guitar) [& guitar - Down By Law] & settled in Long Beach, Ca. where the pair combined the energy of punk, the twin guitar attack of MC5, w/ their mutual fondness for Captain Beefheart [the band name is culled from the Captain Beefheart song “Orange Claw Hammer”); & all the avant-garde experimentation that a Capt. Beefheart influence entailed. • The sound of Claw Hammer is a mix of punk, rock, blues, jazz, w/ frequent rhythm changes b/t styles, & Wahl’s howling (yowling?) vocals. • I saw Claw Hammer in Gainesville, FL at the Hardback Cafe, in ‘91/92. They played Uncontrollable Urge live that night • Interesting thing about this full cover LP is that u hear Claw Hammer’s cover of DEVO’s cover version of the Rolling Stones’ song (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction. • DEVO’s Mark Mothersbaugh ok’d this cover project, offered guidance & wrote the liner notes (see photo). A little IMPALA at 4:30am. And why not? This is the reissue on Chaputa! Records. It was originally released by Sympathy For The Record Industry back in 1999 and that is a great LP if you can find it cos it comes with a nice booklet filled with photos from the movie. This reissue though has awesome cover art and so picking it up was a no-brainer. You can still find copies of the original pressing on Discogs for really good prices if you’re interested. I got this reissue from @soundflat_mailorder so if you’re looking to get this with the new cover art, that’s where you can find copies of it. Woohoo! Impala are awesome! I still need to find 2 records of theirs and I have a complete discography. I hope I can finish this and find them on my travels someday. It’s such solid stuff. Nice reverb mixed with guitars drenched in creepy darkness. It’s so good! If you like instrumental jams, I urge you to check this out. You’ll be glad you did… especially at 4:30am. #junevinylchallenge hosted by @lvboy_inmusic . Day 1 - Fav Picture Disc . Rocket From the Crypt - Boychucker b/w Jumper K. Balls / Lefty 7” single (Sympathy for the Record Industry, 1992) . Most of my picture discs are limited to 7” singles, but this will do nicely. . This picture disc was the first release by RFTC on the Sympathy for the Record Industry label. Part of a flood of singles RFTC released in 1992, I believe there were ~1200 of these discs issued in the initial pressing. There are various variants included in that run of 1200, and even a later reissue, but my copy is just a regular, non-variant, non-unicorn, regular ol’ first pressing picture disc. But it’s got some fine artwork from musician/artist Eric “Rick” Froberg aka Rick Fork (Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes. . Messers. Speedo, Petey X, N.D., Apollo 9, and Atom are all in fine form here; their names only hidden to protect the ears of the innocent. The San Diego punk band really turns up the energy on this disc. Boychucker is a standout track, and the groove is non-stop. I move at double speed when I hear it. A substitute for the stimulant of your choice. #NowPlaying - KOZIK & Sonic Boom - "Loser", green edition on Black wax, signed by Frank Kozik (1994) I was fortunate enough to meet Kozik on several occasions. Our interactions were always brief but pleasant. In fact, he was the last artist I chatted with at this past DCON. Back in 2011, I brought my copy of this 7" to SDCC for him to sign. He chuckled about it and told me it's something he hadn't seen in a while. I asked him about his label, Man's Ruin, and why he got out of the record biz. It was a cool conversation that concluded with a hilarious sketch (second image). I'm only a fan, but I will genuinely miss seeing him at conventions. El Vez, who was once an opening act for Morrissey, schools us with a song that is ACTUALLY ABOUT Cinco de Mayo. Now you know! I know I double-dipped with The Pogues’ “Fiesta”, having played it for that other excuse to get drunk and wallow in ethnic stereotypes holiday back in March. But it kinda sorta sounds like Banda music with it’s bright trumpet riffs and skittering accordion runs, so I can’t help it. If you've been following me here for more than a day then you probably already know that @rftcrftc is my all-time favorite band. They were the inspiration for the prompt on the ides of Smarch. Their logo was my second tattoo ever. I've probably seen them more than any other band aside from the one my brother was in. Seeing them perform makes my soul feel warm and fuzzy. I cannot help but move, clap, and sing along. My stomach still gets in knots when I can't make it to a show nearby. They are one of the only bands where I actively collect as many variants as possible, as witnessed here. There are only a couple of those "white whale" releases out there that I have not found or cannot afford. They are, simply put, the best. Give it up for the band ladies and gentlemen!
