Why “SHAKE MAKER Designs”? I was asked recently about my choice of business name, so I thought I would share with you the story behind the name… Shake Maker Designs was inspired by my father’s humble heritage of hard working cedar shake makers. Growing up, my dad alongside his parents and siblings, earned a modest and sometimes meager wage by making shakes. Their hard work ethic has always inspired me. Holding to #hope My family and I are currently in the midst of the multiple fires sweeping through BC’s interior. Friends and family have been displaced, homes have been lost, and the mood is tense and anxious. Just this morning, a small fire started on the mountain behind our home. Even in this, I am reminded to cling to the word “hope”. Even in life’s worst, we can cling to the hope of a better tomorrow. Of unexpected provision. Of a new start. The second image (photo credit not mine but sourced from a local group) is of a local historic building that was lost in the fires. In the 70s, my dad spent time with his family splitting and packing shakes from the plentiful cedar trees to make a meager living. On special occasions, they would stop in at when it was used as a small general store, still offering handmade leather workbooks and jars of old fashioned hard candies. It deeply saddened my dad to see it had been destroyed. #shakemakerdesigns was named in honor of my dad and his family. They worked hard to create beautiful, purpose filled items (shakes) from areas of land they were allowed to cut cedar trees from (areas considered less important, or neglected). Cedar shakes are in themselves very simple objects, but on a home can be purposeful and beautiful. Much of what I create involves taking the neglected, overlooked or common items and turning them into something of purpose and beauty.
