Death - The Sound Of Perseverance (August 31st, 1998) The final Death album that was never meant to be a Death album. Chuck by this point was not interested in making more Death music. He was more interested in his side project Controlled Denied, which is definitely more prog. From my understanding, Chuck never wanted it to be a Death album but wanted it to be apart of a Controlled Denied release. Whatever the case may be, this is still a stellar release with the Death name on it. "Scavenger Of Human Sorrow" and "Spirit Crusher" are my two favorite Death songs and it ends with a curious cover of Judas Priests "Painkiller" which doesn't really match Chuck's vocal range but is still surprisingly good. Of course after this, Chuck disbanded Death and continued Controlled Denied until Chuck was stricken with brain cancer and passed away in December of 2001. Thank you for the music, Chuck Shuldiner. The Sound Of Perseverance never charted. When he started the project with his vocals, they were very melodic but he did it as a mock up. Ultimately he would end up having Tim Aymar sing on the album. End result? Brilliant! If you haven’t I recommend you listen to it. It’s nothing like DEATH just an amazing heavy/prog/power metal album (imo). Day 1176 Suicide Machine - Death About the album and the song - ‘Human’ is the transition point for Death. Up to this point, Chuck Schuldiner had essentially inked the blueprint for death metal in blood and brain matter. His bloody lyrics had inspired a host of bands hailing from around the world. This is an outstanding death metal album, which strikes the perfect balance between old school brutality and technical adventurous playing. Simply put, Human re-wrote the book of death metal. While still maintaining the relentless brutality that made Schuldiner and co. famous in the first place, the album took death metal into previously unexplored territories and resulted in the most innovative and impressive album Death had created. The sheer technicality, brutality, and progressiveness of this release was groundbreaking back when Human came out. Even now, Human still remains a revolutionary and highly influential masterpiece - this timeless gem has lost none of its luster through the sands of time. “Suicide Machine” is an absolute classic, it's probably the best example of the progressive nature of the album, most of the riffs are half-heaviness and half-melody, but the pre-chorus riffs are just amazing and climactic, the unexpected time changes just blow one away every time, and it's all pretty stably put together, and the chorus is probably one of the most famous Death hooks, with the iconic lyric. The track has it all, jackhammer double-kick, brilliant riffs and solos from Chuck and Paul, and great bass lines from DiGorgio as well as Chuck's brutal but decipherable vocals. On August 31st 1998 our ears were lucky enough to have the ability to hear the swansong of the groundbreaking band simply known as Death. Death: The Sound of Perseverance (1998) Retro-Review Music: 10/10 Artwork: 9/10 A quarter of a century ago, on this exact day, the legendary Death, founders and icons of death metal, had released their last full-length LP “The Sound Of Perseverance”. Do I need to reiterate the importance of Death for metal? No, but I feel obligated to do so nonetheless. Without Death there would be no death metal or at least the genre would not have evolved as it did. Until today, bands draw influences from the crew around the late Chuck Schuldiner. Just this month of August, I wrote about two death metal bands, namely Crypta and Horrendous, which both incorporated styles and patterns from Death into their latest releases – both records are serious bangers btw. So, Death remains everywhere. Back in the 80s, they did more than just pioneering a new genre and freaking out the mainstream media. They played a pivotal role in the genre’s evolution and ever increased the canvas for other bands to paint and experiment on. Lyrically provocative and contemplative, musically proficient and daring, technically virtuous and vicious, Death showed that not only can music take extreme forms through high tempo and gritty distortion, but also be challenging, layered and innovative. The many strands of death metal, be it technical, melodic, progressive, classical or even brutal death metal, all of them can be traced back to Death in some way. “The Sound of Perseverance” is probably their most sophisticated work. With better production that made everything sound super crisp and tight, Death kept raising the bar by pushing boundaries while still remaining heavy, blistering and ferocious at the core. On the other hand, Death allowed themselves some melodic headwind. Let us not forget the marvelous “Voice of the Soul” with its gorgeous acoustic guitar, the addictive arpeggios and spine chilling guitar solos, one of the greatest instrumental tracks ever composed. The heavy hitters “Spirit Crusher”, “Bite the Pain” or “The Flesh and the Power It Holds” remain all-time classics, and so does the rest. This masterpiece forever cemented their legacy. Perfect! Day 1108 Bite The Pain - Death About the album and the song - Few bands have perfect discographies and Death is one of those bands. All of their albums are awesome, and each one pushed death metal into new territories. Chuck and crew always were one step ahead of their competition, and ‘The Sound Of Perseverance’ is no exception, as they take things to a new level of complexity. This album was the fitting swan song for Chuck, being near faultless on every single level. A multitude of ideas, techniques, catchy, quite bold melodies, it all exploded here. The album itself has a gloriously dry, clean production that seems designed for maximum penetration. No matter how harmonious, the guitars cut like chainsaws. The drums pop in that wonderful way that computers have yet to replicate, and the bass tone is full, rich, and heavy. This is a very technical, well written piece of progressive death metal that needs no clean vocals and constant acoustic guitars to progress from segment to segment and convey simultaneous feelings of loss, hate, anger and despair all at once such as other bands in the genre. “Bite The Pain” is probably the heaviest track from the album, featuring a very chuggy verse riff, with Chuck's disjointed vocal lines that make the verses unusually catchy, and a bizarre chorus that is split into almost 4 sections. It starts off rather beautifully before exploding into a dark and twisted song. The opening guitar riff gives the feeling of moving into a bottomless pit. Brilliantly arranged and full of exciting twists and turns. The band started in 1996 as Schuldiner wanted to create a more melodic style than was possible with Death. The project was interrupted by Death's release The Sound of Perseverance in 1998, but finally the debut album The Fragile Art of Existence was released in 1999. Death - The Sound of Perseverance Released in 1998 by Nuclear Blast, The Sound of Perseverance is Death's 7th & final album. It continues the progressive death metal sound from Symbolic. The cover of TSoP was created by Travis Smith, who did artworks for Opeth & Katatonia. The album was recorded at Morrisound Studios. The album's production is crystal clear & what makes the album itself so great is due to Richard's complex drumming with numerous fills, Chuck & Shannon's half-brutal, half melodic riffs that are technical yet powerful along with awesome solos & licks. Scott's basslines, while they are not fretlsss but at least they are audible & he delivers some amazing basslines. As for Chuck's vocals on TSoP, some people don't like it & some don't mind it. And then there's Voice of the Soul, a beautiful instrumental track with acoustic guitar & dual solos. The album closes with a cover of Judas Priest's Painkiller with a rewritten solo. As much as I love Scream Bloody Gore, I was surprised to find out how different The Sound of Perseverance is compared to Death's previous albums. Nontheless, I do like The Sound of Perseverance but not as much as I like Scream Bloody Gore. A great album anyway. With the release of The Sound of Perseverance which is praised by fans as one of Death's greatest albums, the band went out with a bang. Day 1056 Scavenger Of Human Sorrow - Death About the album and the song - As a whole, Death are an outstanding and legendary band whose legacy is unparalleled in the metal community. They released many excellent and highly memorable albums throughout their existence. ‘The Sound Of Perseverance’ is the ideal metal masterpiece and the perfect way to seal Chuck's legacy. This is Death's most technical and one of the most brilliant albums out of their entire discography. The compositions may not be the shortest or the most easily digestible here, but their length and degree of complexity are absolutely justified. This isn't one of those albums that one forgets about, musically. It is an album one can marvel and greatly appreciate due to the immensely sufficient and sophisticated technicality that is heard on it. This isn’t easiest listen in the world—it’s more or less a constant reminder of how huge a presence Schuldiner was for death metal, and how devastating his loss remains—but it’s a constantly rewarding one. Album opener is the jarring “Scavenger Of Human Sorrow”, which clocks in at almost seven minutes. Christy’s drums spatter the ears before the intricate guitars take over; one moment existing as a melodic chug, the next bruising the soul with its seemingly perplexing structures. Barely a minute in, we’re treated to a jazzed up bass tumble and discordant drum. The track never allows the listener to get a foot-hold, but those expecting the usual Chuck growls will find his new screeched approach refreshing.
