Reps: 💪 You can build #strength between 3-30 reps and anywhere between 1-4 sets. 💪However, according to the American College of Sports Medicine, the #exercise guidelines for #cancersurvivors recommends working between 6-15 reps, and 1-3 sets. 💪There is nothing magical about these numbers, as you can build strength with any number of repetitions, but from a practical standpoint, no one wants to perform 30 repetitions of one exercise when you can do 6 and get the same benefit Weight: 🏋️‍♀️ See if you can do at least 4 reps with your chosen weight. Was it easy or hard? If it was hard, stop. It’s too heavy. If it was easy, see if you can go to 8. If you feel a slight burn, great; you have a good weight. If you reach 8 and it’s too easy, try getting to 12 reps. 🏋️‍♀️ If you do 12 and you don't even feel the slightest burn, it’s too light and you need to bump up in weight or make it harder. 🏋️‍♀️ The goal is to work between 6-15 reps, and if you choose an exercise that allows you to only do 4 reps, then the weight or movement is too hard and may require supervision for proper form and technique. Sets: 👏 A set is a group of repetitions of an exercise and can be separated with short or long rest periods, depending on the exercise. 👏 When starting out, 1 set lets your body know "Hey, look! We got some movement! Great." With 2 sets, your body may tell you "Ok, I had to work a little but feeling good", and if you jump into 3 sets too soon, your body will tell you "Ouch" quickly, and soreness will kick in. 👏 So, be mindful to start slowly, and build your way up. 👏 The goal is to work your way up to 3 sets. BONUS 💥 Keep in mind, however, that this does not mean by the end of the week. It should take a minimum of 6-8 weeks, depending on the exercise, to work your way up to 3 sets. In school, many of us learn about the concept of "homeostasis" or the body's ability to maintain a state of balance among all the body systems needed for both survival and function. Outside of maintaining physiological processes, our body also strives to maintain or "𝗥𝗘𝗚𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗘" our nervous system. When we lose this ability to maintain, chaos ensues and dis-ease settles in- physically, emotionally, and energetically. 𝗥𝗘𝗚𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 refers to the body's inherent ability to maintain balance, adapt to changes, and optimize its physiological functions when exposed to internal and external stressors. It is based on the principle that the body has innate self-regulatory mechanisms that strive to maintain health and homeostasis. All of which give us the power to heal, no matter what is "thrown" our way. 🔥𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: Poor regulation is like when someone's house is on fire and they stay in the building while its burning. Proper regulation is like when the house is on fire, but you do everything in your power to leave. Our incredible body is equipped with various regulatory systems and feedback loops, of which rely heavily on the subconscious functions of the two arms of our Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). Unfortunately, our systems are bombarded with stressors that can disrupt this regulation. Although the body can quickly adapt after one or two "assaults," over-time, the stressors build, our body loses it's ability to compensate for said stressors, and dis-ease settles in. 🤔Want to learn more about regulation & how you can support your own innate healing capacity?
