Ten years ago, I embarked on a transformative journey, one that was only possible because I made the conscious decision to stop drinking and get my life in order. Sobah Bird Summery Long Lunch 16.12.23 at Sobah Brewery + Cafe @sobahcafe These culinary kings, Indigenous chefs Chris and Clinton, cooked up a feast late last year for our first special long lunch event. Nearly a month later, we're stoked to share some pics from the afternoon featuring some eats and drinks from the menu. Our guests sipped on various non-alc drinks featuring Australian native botanicals from @Altinadrinks and @mondaydistillery and a selection of #Sobahbeer and Catie from @Clovendoe mixed cocktails in the art gallery. Kelly's best advice to her younger self is having self belief and the courage to back yourself to go for it. "You can be anything you want to be, believe in yourself and go get it." Kelly has a non-Indigenous father and an Aboriginal mother and being fair skinned left many unexplained questions about identity and belonging. Looking back on her life now, Kelly recognises that this caused her to feel alone, unsettled and doubtful. Kelly didn’t have access to her culture or Aboriginal Elders to support and guide the development of her cultural identify so she found herself lost traversing young adulthood using alcohol and drugs to block out the pain. "I was continuing a generational cycle of alcohol abuse and self-destructive behaviour." Having children can be life changing and for Kelly having her son at 30 was a turning point in her life. Ep.9 guest Amber Rules from @roughpatchcounselling on overcoming adversity and thinking of counselling as self-care. "I think for all of the things that were difficult about my childhood and upbringing, one of the things that I was really blessed to have was a mum who really believed in the power of counselling. And so from an early age, I always had access to counselling, and as support, but also, it wasn't stigmatised for me the way it was for a lot of other people. So I have never felt shame about seeing a therapist. And I have seen a therapist for more years of my life than I haven't, you know, even when I was little. I think a huge part of my change was knowing on a kind of cellular level that if I wanted to make some change, I would be be able to find somebody to support me with that." Amber's advice is to accept that things have happened the way they happened. "Everyone goes through rough patches, everyone has hard feelings to deal with. We don't necessarily need to stop feeling those feelings in order to get support and help... sometimes accepting that rough patches happen can be actually an easier way through it than railing against it. My advice is to keep going and to be gentle with yourself." Again it was great to have Amber on the podcast and there was certainly a lot of great advice there for anyone struggling with difficult times and how to access support.
