Such a fun read!! Sinking back into an old school King is such a treat! I don’t want to share any spoilers, even though this is an old one. This event is referred to in some of his other stories but I loved that I went in blind. This was first published in 89 - and we are introduced to Sheriff Pangborn (my fave character 🖤) How does he write background for a character like Alan Pangborn that seems like such a side point, and yet it helps to move such a big plot point in his story for Needful Things published 3 years later? Tra alti e bassi, credo che "𝗟𝗮 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗮̀ 𝗼𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗮" sia stato una buona scelta per segnare in qualche modo questo mio piccolo traguardo nell'esplorazione dell'imponente bibliografia del caro Stephen La trama ci porta vicino alla celebre Castle Rock (motivo per cui suggerisco fortemente di seguire l'ordine di pubblicazione!) per raccontare la bizzarra storia di Thad Beaumont e George Stark; il secondo è lo pseudonimo letterario a cui il primo ricorre per uscire dal blocco dello scrittore e dedicarsi ad un nuovo genere. Qualcuno scopre però la verità, spingendo Thad a seppellire -metaforicamente e non solo- il suo alter ego; purtroppo Stark non accetta di buon grado di essere stato eliminato e, acquisito come per magia un corpo reale, è pronto a rivalersi sui suoi carnefici Uno spunto certo figlio dello smascheramento dell'identità di Richard Bachman, che però riesce a discostarsene creando una storia molto suggestiva ed avvincente: il testo è costellato da scene d'azione e tensione davvero valide. A couple of interesting expressions found in the book: to be in a pickle= to be in a difficult situation. The Dark Half by Stephen King It's been a while since I've read something from Stephen King and I don't really have any plans on reading him again until I saw this book making a cameo on the music video of Surreal by @jahdedios 😅(love the song and the mv sm😍) I got really curious as to why they chose a Stephen King book to put in there since the song has a very opposite vibes to it - light, soft,dreamy. not so Stephen King,right? 🤔 But now that I finished the book, I can say that it is so so surreal😅🥰 One thing in common with the book and the song is that they both talk about dreams. While Justin sings about living in his imagination, the book's main character,Thad Beaumont, wanted to live in his reality by 'burying' the subject of his imagination. Also,both the mv and the book used a lot of symbolism that added another layer of intrigue to me. In the book,the subject of Thad's imagination is his alter ego,George Stark. A pen name he used to write his successful crime novels,Thad thought that he should put George to rest for good. But when he did, 'surreal' things starts to happen around him until he realized that George Stark might be more than just a fragment of his dreamland. On the whole, I'm glad I read the book as it reignited my enthusiasm for King's works. I can't say that I like or love it but I definitely enjoy the experience reading it. Out of the blue, he is blackmailed by a punk from New York that has discovered a hidden secret about Thad: before writing serious novels, he had written cheap literature using the pseudonym of George Stark and has become a successful writer of the genre and made enough money to raise his family. Thad and Liz discuss the situation and Thad calls his editors telling them that he would tell the truth about George Stark to the press. The editors like the idea and prepare a promotional event, with That Beaumont burying George Stark in the cemetery. When the photographer is murdered, Sheriff Alan Pangborn comes to Thad's home and tells that he is the prime suspect of the crime. Thad believes that the blackmailer is responsible for the death, however later he finds that the man was murdered. Soon there after, there is a crime spree incriminating Thad. however, he claims that George Stark is responsible for the bloodshed. Alright, King fans, don't come for my head. Here's the thing: I started reading King when I was 12. The first book I read was Carrie-- I loved it. I moved on to Cujo, The Shining, Misery etc--- whatever the local library was stocking in the 90s, since my parents did not want me reading his work at a young age. I enjoy most of King's early work and premises. The problem I have (and this might be a "me thing") is his books are often bloated, full of subplots that don't add to the main story, and don't lead to great endings. You can pretty much guarantee: Author ✔️ Family Man✔️ Addiction✔️ The ideas are good, the premise is promising, but I often don't have the patience needed to get through the mundane details to get to the Scary. Enter The Dark Half. This was off to a quick, weird (in a good way) start. I wasn't expecting Thad's brain to be how it is-- no spoilers, but I was thinking, are we headed into b-book territory? (the movie Malignant also came to mind). I won't go over King's background-- drug addiction and the Bachman pen name surely inspired the creation of The Dark Half. And again, it's an interesting premise-- killer disassociative, alter ego, manifestations - and it has some of the goriest violence I can remember in a King book... but I got bored. I wasn't very interested in the Thad sections and kept waiting for Stark to come back, as over-the-top-cartoon-villain as he was. (continued in Comments)

I'm trying to get back into some sort of audiobook groove and decided that, even though I'm in the middle of a big hardcover book and also have a 34 year old ratty paperback copy of this book, I'd dive into a classic Stephen King I haven't read yet. For me, the key with audiobooks is choosing something I don't have to listen too intently to, and so far this one has been fitting the bill. It's also been a great way for me to get through longer books over the years since I can up the playback speed. I've listened to quite a few King novels so it's like stepping back into familiar territory (though it always seems I end up listening to some gross scene on my way to get groceries?). 🖤 Stephen King - The Dark Half Review: For the first time in years, I've finally got back round to reading Stephen King and 'The Dark Half' was a great re-introduction to the classic author. I've read numerous novels from him like 'The Shining' and 'Salem's Lot' but it was refreshing to choose a book which was a mystery to me in terms of plot. Thad Beaumont is a writer married to wife Liz and father to twins has achieved success with his pseudonym: 'George Stark' until one day Thad decides to effectively 'kill' off George in a burial involving heavy promotion and press. Ultimately people connected to Thad's publishing begin to get killed off one by one, thus making Thad the prime suspect. Only connected to these incidents is a secret buried in the past Thad doesn't know about except hints such as headaches, the huge flocks of sparrows outdoors and recurring nightmares. Who is the dark half? This was a great read and the pace fell nicely, the middle of the story maybe a tad slow but it picked up later on. The characters were well formed and not too many featured throughout except brief minor ones during the early course of the book. The Dark Half may not be one of King's most well known of novels and it comes across as less supernatural compared to the likes of 'IT' but the subject matter is relatable especially when it comes to twin siblings and using a pen name (Stephen King used inspiration for his pseudonym 'Richard Bachman' for this story). Finally reading this has definitely made myself want to continue with more King books in future, especially the latest ones I purchased very recently and I also wish to watch the 1993 movie adaptation of this novel!
