Ice fishing at Spray Lakes. This trip was from a few years ago, but nothing has changed considering the regulations or the status of the fishery. Ice fishing is not allowed in the national parks so Spray Lakes Reservoir is generally considered the go-to Ice fishing lake for people staying or residing In the resort communities of Banff, Canmore and Kananaskis due to its proximity and quality of the fishery. You are allowed to keep 3 lake trout with no size limit and 5 rocky mountain whitefish over 30cm. Generally, the bite is best for Lakers at first light until noon and then for the last couple hours of daylight in the evening. The Trout are generally average to small but most people get their limit and 10 fish days are not unheard of. I've never caught a whitefish through the ice but I've got them in the summer before so I know the potential is there.. Bait is allowed except bait fish, the most productive bait is often frozen smelt jigged just off the bottom or in conjunction with a Buzz Bomb. Although it may seem a bit late in the season this trip was during the last few days of March and generally, this is when the ice is at its thickest so rest assured it is perfectly safe. What is challenging is drilling through all that snow and ice with a manual auger so if you have access to a motorized one that would be ideal. If selecting a manual one 8 inches wide would be best as any wider would make it even more difficult to drill. If you don't access the lake from one of the main parking lots you may encounter waste deep snow hiking in from the road like we did on this trip so snow shoes may be a consideration. The lake is open all year and generally has safe ice conditions from around the December holidays into the second weekend in April. Late March is ideal as generally the air temperature is warmer and the days are longer than at the beginning of the season. Wapiti Sports in Canmore can provide up-to-date conditions, sell or rent any gear or tackle you may need and even offer guided trips if you're not feeling up to it yourself. #spraylakes #icefishingtrout #kcountry #albertaicefishing #enchantedbackpacking

A throwback to exactly 5 years ago. Bodhi sat on my shoulders while we Xc skied down to have a social time on the lake, then Bodhi walked out. This is the way we roll. Earn your turns. A little ski. I had a comment, Bodhi doesn’t look happy because you can’t see his happy tail. The reality is it’s serious business walking outside, especially when there’s other animals and predators around and they’re constantly keeping track of things to keep them safe. While looking through these photos it’s classic for him to show me his happy tail when he walks up to me, then goes straight back down into “on guard” mode as he walks past me. Showing me he’s happy but getting straight back to business. Venturing into the Canadian wilderness is a serious outing for a walking cat. A cat that gets carried around and plunked down for photos once in a while might not have the same fears and assessment skills required for survival as a cat that has become confident figuring it out on their own. If Bodhi is walking, I support him, regardless of his “look”. If he’s really scared he tells me he wants to load up on my shoulders. We’re a team and I’m there to support and encourage him when needed not shelter him from his fears.
