Tabasco, our 2 year old 12 pound tabby, is still looking for her own home and now her adoption fee has been sponsored! That’s right - you can have your very own purring, snuggling, biscuit making best friend FOR FREEEEEEEEE. Tabasco is the mom to kittens Ripley and Jones. She was pregnant and in a very crowded situation so we stepped in to help so she could have her babies in a safe space. Now that Ripley and Jones have been adopted, Tabasco is ready to forget all about being a mother and is ready to be someone’s lap-cat. Affectionate, confident and very sweet, Tabasco loves attention. She has mastered the art of the head-butt and is ready to love you. Being young herself, Tabasco still has a bit of a wild streak, and likes to play the piano at night and toss toys about like most cats. Despite her night-owl tendencies, she is very good in the house and is litter box trained. Tabasco was a great mother and protected her kittens from all the other animals in her foster home. Since leaving motherhood behind, Tabasco appears to be dog-tolerant but she’s not interested in having a cat roommate. We think a cat-savvy dog friend and a slow introduction would work well. Kids over 6 would also be fine as long as they are respectful of cats. Tabasco is microchipped, spayed, FeLV/FIV negative and current on her flea treatment. ADOPTED! Taffy, now Buffy, came to us after being hit by a car and walking herself onto a city bus in California to get help. The CA shelter patched her up and sent her our way for continued care and to find her a forever home. ADOPTED! Faye, our 10 year old terrier mix came to us after being found stray with eye issues. Likely born blind, her severe glaucoma that caused her a lot of pain, so we removed them for her and she was so much happier and ready to find her own family. It took her a little while, which we can understand - Faye is awesome and super capable, but not everyone is ready for life with a blind pup. Luckily she found Kayla and her partner and along with them, Faye gets a couple puggle siblings and a kitty sibling! She gets to explore the world with her family, have as much lounging and cuddle time as she could want, and sniff around and play in her own yard! That sounds like a pretty perfect life to us. Dottie, our 4 month old 3 pound puppy, is a fair-weather dog. Rain? Wind? No thank you; you can find Dottie curled up on the couch with the cats. Wake her up when the sun is out. Now it’s finally Dottie weather, (we won’t tell her how quickly that changes) and it’s also time to find Dottie a home. Dottie was nearly skeletal when she was found stray. Upon intake at the shelter, it was discovered that Dottie had anaplasma - an infection caused by a tick bite. The infection made her anemic and feel sick and was likely why she was so skinny. That tick was probably not that much smaller than our Dottie! Due to the infection and because she had cloudy eyes, we were asked to take her in. Fortunately, anaplasma responds to antibiotics, and Dottie is now asymptomatic for the infection. We also discovered that Dottie has congenital KCS, or “dry eye”. She doesn’t make tears on her own, which is why her eyes were cloudy. Dottie responded great to an eye medication called Optimmune, and her eyes are much more comfortable. She will need to stay on this medication long term. Dottie is a delightful dog. It’s always fun to watch a puppy get the zoomies; even more so when the puppy is so tiny. Dottie has been great with the cats and is friendly and sweet. She can be shy around men, but warms quickly to women. Being a fair weather dog, it’s been hard to convince Dottie to walk on a leash. A drop of rain will hit her and she’ll freeze and shake. Dottie is, however, great on her potty pads. She is not destructive, is gentle when playing, and loves to cuddle close. Dottie should be fine with respectful, careful children. Dottie is current on her flea and heartworm preventatives and has been dewormed. She is spayed and microchipped. ADOPTED! Willa is CUTE. More importantly than that, she’s a little magical. This puppy came to us after being found stray and hit by a car and needed time in a splint to heal from her elbow injury. If it didn’t heal, she would have needed extensive surgery, but with her puppy magic, splints, and time, she healed up perfectly and was ready to find her own forever home. She found her human in Colton and she gets to be his travel buddy, hiking partner, and couch warming friend when all the adventuring is done for the day. She also gets to put her smarts to work and continue building those training skills. Now that the weather in the PNW is turning its most perfect form, Willa’s definitely in for all of the best things in life! To be honest, we don’t really know that Charlie, our 8 year old 24 pound dog, is a Shiba Inu/Chihuahua mix. He just looks a lot like one. But, where Shibas are know for being aloof (yes, we know, not ALL Shibas), Charlie is the opposite of aloof. He loooooves you. Charlie wants to breathe the breath you breathe, wear your clothes, watch you sleep. That’s a lot less creepy coming from a dog. Charlie is looking for the peanut butter to his jelly, and we’re here to help him. Found stray (seriously, how? He’s the most loyal dog), we were asked to help Charlie due to his dental disease. We took him in, cleaned his teeth, extracted several painful ones, and now Charlie’s smile matches his winning personality. Charlie has been a delightful guest. He is potty trained, not destructive, quiet and polite. Although he doesn’t like being in a crate, he’s good at being in the house alone (although may initially complain that the love of his life (you?!?!) has left). Charlie is great on a leash and wants to say hi to every person and dog. Although we have not seen him around cats or kids, we suspect he should be fine. Charlie has never showed a shred of aggression or resource guarding. Charlie is heartworm negative, microchipped and current on his flea and heartworm preventatives. His adoption fee is $250. ADOPTED! Patch, our 2 year old chihuahua mix, came to us from our friends at @awoofovermyhead with a liver shunt. This is something that causes the blood to bypass, or shunt, around the liver and can be fatal. We confirmed the shunt with blood tests and an ultrasound and quickly worked to get Patch to the next state of treatment - surgery with a specialist followed by recovery in his foster home. Several surgeries and a lot of time and care later, he was finally well enough to begin the search for his own forever home. And you know, it took him quite a while to get any applications, but in the end, it only really takes one great application to change a pup’s life. Bevis is a young and energetic guy, so we decided to try daycare for him to help with some of his energy and excitability and not only did he love daycare, but he also met Aiden there who applied to adopt him! Our friends at @stumptownstrays have an awesome puppy looking for a home! Meet Coal! He is a 38 pound 5 month old puppy! Coal is a sweet puppy who’s looking for a home to grow up in and Stumptown is working hard to find him one! Coal was found stray and injured. His vet team suspects that he was run over by a car since Coal sustained multiple pelvic and hip fractures. It’s been weeks, and two surgeries later, Coal is finally all healed! He still needs to build some muscle, but he can now walk and run just like any other puppy. Coal has had plenty of crate training (due to his surgery, Coal had to be crated often) and is potty trained as well. His foster family describes him as very friendly and affectionate. Coal loves all people and has been fostered with kids. We think he would be fine in a family with kids over 3; he is a bit mouthy still just because he’s a puppy. Coal is learning how to walk on a leash and still needs to learn regular dog things like stay, come, leave it. He is a baby and is eager to please, so he should be fun to train. Even with all of that, he was all kisses, wags, and sweetness. We did dental work on this gentle giant and then after weeks in foster on antibiotics for his skin, he was ready and excited to find his own home. Tabasco, our 2 year old 12 pound tabby, is the mom to our previously posted kittens, Ripley and Jones. She was pregnant and in a very crowded situation so we stepped in to help so Tabasco could have her babies in a safe space. Now that Ripley and Jones are old enough to be adopted, Tabasco is ready to forget all about being a mother and is ready to be someone’s lap-cat. Affectionate, confident and very sweet, Tabasco loves attention. She has mastered the art of the head-butt and will immediately purr and make biscuits. Being young herself, Tabasco still has a bit of a wild streak, and likes to play the piano at night and toss toys about. Despite her night-owl tendencies, Tabasco is very good in the house and is litter box trained. Tabasco was a great mother and protected her kittens from all the other animals in her foster home. Since leaving motherhood behind, Tabasco appears to be dog-tolerant but she’s not interested in having a cat roommate. We think a cat-savvy dog friend and a slow introduction would work well. Kids over 6 would also be fine as long as they are respectful of cats. Tabasco is microchipped, spayed, FeLV/FIV negative and current on her flea treatment. Her adoption fee is $100. We discovered that the wound was secondary to a grass seed that had migrated under her skin (check your pups, friends, as Spring is Springing!) After we removed the seed, her skin healed beautifully and she was ready to find a forever home! She found her family with Chelsea, her husband, and their 2 dogs and 2 cats! Belle gets to live on a farm where she’s learning the fine art of growing up from her canine siblings, exploring the land and trails around her new home with her humans, and getting all the love and affection a young pup like her could hope for. Meet Davy! She is with our friends at @stumptownstrays in Portland and would love to find a family! Davy is 5 months old and is a 33 pound puppy. Stumptown is an amazing medical rescue in our community, and they have worked their magic again on Davey! She was found injured, and they diagnosed a badly broken leg. Her leg could not be salvaged and they amputated it. Tripod dogs thrive, and Davy runs around on 3 legs like any other puppy!! Davy will be able to happily do what other dogs can do thanks to her amazing vet team! Davy is a resilient, sweet, funny puppy. She is great with other dogs, cats, kids and strangers. Being 5 months old, Davy is still mouthy so we recommend kids over 8. She also wants to play with the cats, so a dog savvy cat would be recommended. Davy is nearly potty trained, good in a crate (quiet all night long) and is working on walking on a leash. She doesn’t love getting in the car, but is willing to learn. She’s a great travel companion once she’s in! Treat motivated and eager to please (she very much loves affection), Davy will be fun to train. Although we did not see her dad, we suspect Davy will be around 50 pounds fully grown. Davy is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated and current on her flea and heartworm preventatives. Sonny, our 8 week old 5 pound terrier mix puppy, came to us because his brother had a foot injury. We obviously couldn’t just take his brother, so Sonny came along for the ride. We have enjoyed watching Sonny learn how to dog, and now that he’s old enough to go out on his own, we’re as excited to find him a home. Sonny’s mom is a small terrier mix and we expect him to stay under 20 pounds. The family was stray when they were found, so no word on who dad was. Sonny has been raised in a house with cats and kids and is well socialized and loving. His foster family describes him as athletic and he loves to hop and play. Although initially timid, once he checks in with his people for reassurance and encouragement, Sonny can party with the best of them. Sonny has been microchipped, dewormed, and is current on his flea and heartworm preventatives. All puppies need vaccines every 3 weeks until they are 16 weeks old. Marley, our 8 week old 4 pound terrier mix puppy, was found stray with his family when he was just a couple of weeks old. We stepped in to help because Marley had a wound on his foot and was missing a few of his toes. With time and antibiotics, the wound has healed well. Further, despite missing toes, Marley walks around normally. We’re now very excited to find Marley a family. Marley’s mom is a small terrier mix and we expect him to stay under 20 pounds. No word on who dad was. Marley has been raised in a house with cats and kids and is well socialized and loving. His foster family describes him as “like soft caramel syrup that leisurely melts into any situation”. Nipsey, our 6 year old 8 pound Chiweenie, has just a few requirements for happiness. He likes a toy with a good “mouth feel” (small teddy bears will do), a long walk, plenty of opportunities to meet new people and dogs, and an evening of snuggling. Oh, and a prescription diet. Nipsey has it all figured out which, hopefully, will make it easy to figure out his forever home. Nipsey was found stray and the shelter reached out to us for help due to ongoing blood in his urine. We diagnosed him with bladder stones and surgically removed them, immediately fixing the problem. In order to prevent the stones from coming back, Nipsey should stay on a prescription urinary diet (he is on Hill’s C/D and likes it). He also needs to have his urine checked 3-4 times a year to rule out infections. That’s not too much to ask for this delightful dog, if we say so ourselves. Easy going, incredibly friendly and well behaved, Nipsey would likely fit in anywhere. He loves a stroll and would be good for a moderately active family. Kids over 6 would work for Nipsey, and he’s been very nice to cats and other dogs both big and small. He sometimes guards his favorite things from other dogs with a quiet growl, so his new dog roommate should be able to understand that signal. Nipsey has never met a stranger and is very fun to take out on the town. Nipsey is heart worm negative, microchipped and current on his flea and heartworm preventatives. His adoption fee is $300. Jones and Ripley, our 8 week old kittens, were born in a Stumptown foster home. Their mother was in a very crowded situation and needed a safe place to have and raise her babies. Although we are a dog rescue, we will help cats too if we have room. Now that they are old enough, it’s time to help Jones and Ripley find their adopters. Jones and Ripley are typical kittens. If you have ever met a kitten, you have an idea of what you’re getting into. If not...how to describe a kitten? Small, adorable lap warmer that is somehow as sharp as it is soft and will climb your curtains and knock over your glass? Oh, but good news, it also poops in a box? We obviously love kittens and Jones and Ripley are very good ones. Jones, the boy, is a touch more brave than Ripley and is most interested in meeting new people and exploring. We suspect he will be a lap cat fully grown. Ripley, the girl, is a little more reserved but she is also very sweet and playful. Both kittens like other cats and have been raised around dogs. They are litterbox trained and good in the house. Both kittens are felv/fiv negative, have been neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. They will need vaccines every 3 weeks until they are 16 weeks old. Jones and Ripley are current on their flea treatment and have been dewormed. We think that Jones and Ripley would like to live together; although not a requirement, we would like to see them adopted into the same home. All of the puppies were adopted quickly but Chili struggled to find an adopter of her own and as she stayed with us, continued to work with a behaviorist and her foster human to build her confidence and manage her anxiety. Leroy, our 2 year old 63 pound Old English Bulldog, has been hard at work on his profile. He sat in a local shelter for over 5 months before we took him in, so he really wants to get it right. Before we start, have you ever ended a relationship because the other person snored? Okay, you can stop reading - Leroy is not the guy for you. Have you ever backed out of a second date because the other person drooled when the food arrived? Have you ever ghosted someone when you found out about a very strange corkscrew tail? Actually, can we see YOUR Tinder profile? Sounds like you need help too. We were asked to spring Leroy from the shelter because he had an eye infection that would not clear up. We diagnosed him with KCS, which is an immune mediated lack of tear production (aka “Dry Eye”). Since he’s been on Optimmune, his tear film normalized, and his eye infection resolved. He will need Optimmune forever, so his adopter should be prepared to spend about 50 dollars a month. Leroy has been so fun to have in foster. He’s a goofy beefcake who is a dorky as he is handsome. Leroy is good in a crate, potty trained and very friendly. He loves everyone he meets but needs a little help not pulling toward all of his new friends while on leash. Leroy likes other dogs and is playful with them. We don’t recommend Leroy live with cats as he wants to chase them. Leroy also chases skateboards, so if you live next to a skatepark, that could pose a challenge (skateboarding is not a crime, Leroy!). Leroy is strong, and we should emphasis, a big dork, so we also recommend he live with older, sturdy children. Lottie, our 8 year old Shih Tzu, understands the struggle with bangs. Too short? You may look a bit unhinged. Too long? Well now you have to part them in the middle. What about trying to get a little body in those bangs? Ugh, mall bangs are very 1992. Fortunately, Lottie’s only struggle is how to style her hair. Otherwise, this sweet dog doesn’t have a care in the world. Lottie was found stray locally. She needed help with her teeth and to be spayed, so we took her in. Now healed from those procedures (she lost a few infected molars), Lottie is hoping for a home that won’t let her get away. Potty trained and quiet, Lottie has been a delight to have in foster. Lottie loves everyone she meets and is cuddly and laid back. She likes to meet other dogs and has been very good with the dogs in her foster home. We have not seen Lottie with cats, but we suspect she would do well (and we can arrange a meet). More than anything, Lottie likes to be cozy. Poppy, our 7 pound 7 year old Yorkie mix, is so friendly that we wonder what she’s up to. Is she secretly planning a run for office? Is this some sort of scam and she’ll soon be asking if we’ve ever heard of crypto currency? Has she already stolen our wallet (where IS our wallet?)? It’s possible that Poppy has no ulterior motive and she’s just honestly looking for a forever home. Our Poppy was found stray locally and she needed help with a mammary mass and her teeth. We took her in, spayed her, removed her mass (benign!) and cleaned her teeth. Because she was spayed so late in life, Poppy may be prone to mammary masses in the future. Her adopter needs to keep an eye on that. An easy house guest, Poppy is quiet, not destructive and is potty trained. We have not tried her in a crate, but because she likes to glue herself to her people, we suspect Poppy wouldn’t enjoy confinement. When Poppy initially meets new dogs, she can be growly. Growls coming from a dog the size of a toy are not very threatening, but her new dog roommates should be patient while she gets to know them. It doesn’t take long for Poppy to make friends, however, and she quickly becomes sweet and cuddly. Poppy is good on a leash, likes kids and cats, and doesn’t mind car rides. Her only fear is that the cuddles will end, so someone who is home often and likes to pet tiny dogs would be ideal. ADOPTED! Cindy, now Maddy, was one of a litter of puppies we took in from our local shelter after they were found abandoned at only a few days old. She was bottle fed and raised in a foster home until she was old enough to find a forever home at 8 weeks. Unfortunately, the home she found at first turned out not to be forever and she was returned to us during a crucial age when they require consistency, patience, and training to help them become great adult dogs. We were sad for her at first, but luckily it turned out to be the best thing as she found her true forever home with Sue, Dave, and their family! She also gets two dog siblings to show her the ropes as she grows and learns. Her new family is head over heels in love with her and we are so excited thinking about all the fun she’s going to have in her life - running, hiking, adventuring, and just lounging and getting loved on by her people. ADOPTED! Oliver, our young shepherd mix, now affectionately called Ollie, came to us from a crowded shelter after being found stray and injured. Our workup showed that he had broken his tibia. Luckily it was almost healed on its own, and with a bit more time in his foster home, he was ready to find his forever family. Ollie found his humans in Tanmay and Anjali! He made himself at home immediately - playful from the moment he entered the house. He’s been enjoying his time playing fetch and playing with other dogs at the park. He’s also been a great worker - napping under the desk while his human works. As a young and smart pup, Ollie is working hard on his training and skills and we’re sure his family is setting him up for a wonderful life as a family pup. Luna doesn’t understand why no one is applying to adopt her. She’s been spending a lot of time online looking at what other dogs in Portland that already have forever homes are doing. We told her that comparison is the thief of joy, but she’s sure that if people see that she can be just as fun as other dogs in the city, someone will love her too. It’s that time of year when Portland pups are out and about getting photographed beneath the cherry blossom trees or amongst their fallen petals and Luna wanted to do that too! ADOPTED! Honey Bun, now Stella, our 10 year old Yorkie, came to us after being found stray with terrible dental disease. This tiny champ had to have 17 teeth removed. That sounds like a lot, but she was much happier without pain even if it meant being without the teeth! After she had her medical workup and dental care, she was ready to start the search for her forever home. But she didn’t have to look far! Stella was adopted by Kristie who heard about her from her child, Tucker, who works at @nwneighborhoodvet and met Stella when she was getting care from our doctors! Just like humans, a common medical condition for dogs that needs the care and support of others is pregnancy. As a rescue that exists to help dogs in need of treatable medical care, when we have available foster homes we will take in momma dogs from shelters to help with their pregnancy and the lengthy after effects (you know…puppies! Puppies who need care for at least 8 weeks before they can find their forever homes.) We have currently taken in 3 momma dogs and between them, they have 17 puppies. SEVENTEEN!!! While they’re super cute and we’re all enamored, the puppies need more than just our loud squealing to get through the first stage of their life. And we need supplies to help them do it. Specifically, we’re in need of x-pens, reusable and disposable potty pads, Purina puppy food, and Hills Small Bites puppy food. Marty needs a big time hail mary. In our last desperate attempt to find a home that could work for him, we’re offering a foster to adopt situation.   If you’ve been following us for a while, you’ll know that we don’t usually do this. But if you’ve been following his story, you’ll also know that he’s been with us for over a year and we haven’t been able to find a home that works for him. Now he’s about to lose his foster home as they’ll be leaving town.   We can’t mince words, Marty can be a difficult dog. He’s had numerous meets and has even been adopted a few times but quickly returned for snapping and behavior issues. But he can also be charming, fun, and loving (on his terms) - he needs someone who’s truly willing to follow guidance from his behaviorist that knows him very well and put in the effort for him.   He can growl or snarl if his boundaries are crossed, so he shouldn’t be in a home with kids. Marty is good with some other dogs, especially smaller ones, and would do well with other calm but CONFIDENT dogs in his house since he may try to bully them. He’s potty trained and not at all destructive.   Marty is protective of his yard and of his house. He will bark at and herd unknown guests, but he does better the longer they visit or if they are repeat visitors. Additionally, he is on behavior medications and he is much less reactive. These should be continued so Marty can stay happy.    Unfortunately, one of the reasons dogs of all sizes get put to sleep in shelters or rescues is because of behaviors that make them unsafe to people and we’re sad to say that if we can’t find a unicorn home for him, that may be his fate.   Do you think you may be that unicorn of a person for Marty? After surgery to repair multiple fractures in his legs, he was ready to settle down with his own human and home. Casey, our 6 month old puppy, likes dogs as much as we do. Which, here at Stumptown, is a lot. Seriously, dogs are our whole thing. So when we meet someone like Casey who has the same interests as we do, we get so excited. Our goal is to get Casey a forever home, and having things in common is the foundation of any good relationship! Casey came to us after having been found stray with a badly injured front leg. Sadly, the leg was too damaged to be saved, and we had to amputate it. Like all of our tripod Stumpies, however, Casey is thriving on three legs. Like we said, Casey’s favorite thing is other dogs. When he sees one, he will immediately play-bow and try to make friends. He is still very much a puppy so Casey’s future housemates should be tolerant of that as he learns. We have not seen Casey with cats or kids, but we think with slow introductions, he should be fine. Since Casey is learning how not to be mouthy and to not jump up, we will recommend kids over 8. Casey is coming a long way with his potty training and is learning how to be alone. Although he doesn’t like being in a crate, his foster family is having luck leaving him confined to a bigger space. We all think having a dog friend will help him feel more secure. Casey is good on a leash, playful, cuddly and really sweet. He loves people and has been just the best patient. We suspect Casey will be about 50-60 pounds fully grown. Casey is current on his flea and heartworm preventatives, is microchipped and is current on vaccines. His adoption fee is $350. We diagnosed him with a resistant bacterial infection, but luckily we were able to get him on the right antibiotic and with care, his skin recovered. He may never grow all of his hair back but even if he never has all of his hair, what he can have is a forever home! Which Migs found with Máximo who applied to adopt him after seeing some sneak peaks of him on our social media. Can you believe that Faye, our 10 year old 11 pound terrier mix, is still searching for a forever home? We can’t understand her lack of applications because we are OBSESSED with this dream boat of a dog and know she’s just waiting to be her human’s best friend. Faye was found stray and likely was born blind. However, her eyes were acutely painful due to severe glaucoma and she needed help. We took her in to remove her eyes (she’s so much happier without them), clean her teeth (she lost a few infected ones) and spay her. Adopting a blind dog might sound scary but trust us, Faye makes it easy. Here’s what you can expect from having Faye join your family: - Complete non-judgement on your worst hair days (she can’t see it and she’d love you too much to care anyway.) - So much love and snuggles. She can’t get enough pets and loves hanging with her people! - The joy of watching this senior pup learn to play with toys for the first time. What a treat to get to pick out new stuffies for her to carry around! - Pure unadulterated bravery! Faye motors through her environments as if she’s sure nothing will stand in her way. Ida, our 6 year old 10 pound chihuahua mix, is a little bit wonky. That’s never a bad thing here at Stumptown Strays; we specialize in wonky. So you won’t be surprised to learn that we think her missing eye and bowlegged knees only make Ida even more charming. Ida was found stray and injured. We took her in as Ida was in pain and her eye could not be saved. We enucleated her eye, spayed her and extracted several loose infected teeth. Now she’s happier than ever. Her foster family describes Ida as “perfect”, and we could not agree more. She is very friendly and loves all people. Ida gets along great with other dogs and we suspect, with appropriate introductions, that Ida would be fine with cats too. Ida is quiet, potty trained and not destructive. She can be trusted to be left alone in the house and would likely do well with gentle kids over 8. Ida has, as we mentioned, angular back legs. She is bowlegged and her kneecaps are situated outside of their normal anatomic position. Ida is comfortable, however, so we elected not to subject her to orthopedic procedures to try and fix them. Ida gets around pain-free, but isn’t a dog for hikes. In fact, Ida’s only requirement is a fully fenced secure yard. She hates a leash and will flatten herself to the ground if anyone tries to walk her. Her adopter should be satisfied with a dog that wants to be a little homebody.
