When we arrived, the moonlit beach looked magical. We knew we were about to experience something unforgettable. In the morning, we hit the waves. LE LOCALISME N’EST PAS QUE POUR LES SURFEUR(SES). - J’ai eu la chance de faire ces photos sur une vague où je ne devais pas être. Le matin même j’étais à la plage de El Zonte au Salvador et deux photographes locaux m’ont demandé de sortir de l’eau car c’était chez eux et qu’ils n’acceptaient pas d’autres photographes. Je suis donc cordialement aller à la plage suivante où les vagues étaient superbes et j’ai rencontré à l’eau @olichampagnee que j’ai pu shooter ainsi que d’autres surfeurs locaux. En discutant avec les surfeurs locaux ils m’ont dit que c’était récurrent et que le lendemain j’irais à l’eau avec eux sur le main spot. Les spots au Salvador deviennent de plus en plus une industrie liée au tourisme du surf, les villes s’appellent SurfCity et tout un système économique et commercial se met en place. Les photographes sur place m’ont de suite perçu comme un voleur de clients et de billets plutôt que d’échanger sur une passion. La communication est importante dans ces moments là, parler de ses projets et bien étudier son environnement. - LOCALISM ISN’T JUST FOR SURFERS - I had the chance to take these photos on a wave where I wasn’t supposed to be. The same morning I was at El Zonte beach in El Salvador and two local photographers asked me to get out of the water because it was their home and they did not accept other photographers. So I cordially went to the next beach where the waves were superb and I met @olichampagnee in the water who I was able to shoot as well as other local surfers. When talking with the local surfers they told me that it was recurring and that the next day I would go in the water with them on the main spot. The spots in El Salvador are increasingly becoming an industry linked to surf tourism, the cities are called SurfCity and an entire economic and commercial system is being put in place. The photographers on site immediately perceived me as a stealer of customers and tickets rather than sharing a passion. I took this baby out and oh my god HAHA— I tried riding it like a shortboard. It’s my first time riding a board this long and it requires a different set of skills, different timing, foot placement, pop up, & weight distribution. It’s actually insane how different long boarding is from riding a shortboard-shaped mid length. The technique and maneuvering is so opposite that they feel like two separate sports. I have learned so much from even just taking this board out once and I’m excited to learn more!! A Sandy Avocado Success Tale: Meet Layla, a familiar face in our programs for several years. Starting with our Classic Surf & Skim Camp, she proudly graduated to our Island Girls Surf Immersion last year. At the beginning, Layla had some reservations about the ocean and her skills. Thanks to the guidance of our instructors, she had the support that she needed to overcome those fears. Yet, it wasn’t just about conquering the waves – along the way, Layla also built lasting friendships. She kicked off her journey by mastering the skimboard, fear turning into finesse. Slowly, she paddled her way into the surf break, gaining confidence with each wave. Now, Layla not only rides the waves with style on both the skimboard and surfboard but effortlessly glides on a skateboard too! Her journey is an example of what a bit of courage, some sandy adventures, and the warmth of friendship can achieve. Some of you will never understand the sheer and utter contentment held in such scenes. - surf board - camping gear - 4 days off work - a forecast of clear skies & good swells Pure bliss. I think it's important to remove comforts from time to time. Strip away some of life's many luxuries to remind ourselves how good we have it. Drive off into the sunset - or toward the swell - with only the basics, no plan and figure it out. See what gifts life throws at you. I drove almost 4 hours to get to Westport, the nearest surf town. When I got there I spoke to a guy who turned out to be a legendary figure. He invited me to spend the next couple of nights camping in his yard. He'd set it up with communal showers, toilets, laundry and fresh water. A safe space that he invites surfers who are travelling through to stop by. Some people end up staying there for weeks. I won't say how we crossed paths. It's up to you to make the drive and figure it out on your own. Maybe something completely different or even better comes your way... The Tundra did great on our 3,700+ mile Baja journey. It safely transported my family, charged our electronics, sipped fuel at only 13 mpg 😂 and never once got stuck. It was also our only dry shelter after enduring the most insane storm I’ve ever camped in (7 hours of torrential downpour, coin-sized hail, overhead lightning and ground shaking thunder). Did you know I wrote a book? 💡 It’s called the Blond Surf: Surf guide for Beginners. 🏄♀️📗 Life throws different situations at us trying to make us learn the lessons we need to understand to grow as human beings. 💫 At least this is my belief. So… 🧚♀️ it all started during one of my travels when I was in Puerto Escondido, Mexico to surf, but… I couldn’t surf. Couple week before, up north in Baja California, on one of the small days, a long border girl suddenly rode over my surfboard, and my foot… 🫨 completely smashing my toe nail, which immediately shuttered into million pieces squiring blood all over. Ouch that was painful. Luckily I was with friends and got some help. Well, tequila was the only pain killer available in the area… 🙄 Let’s skip a week or two. Somehow I flew to Puerto Escondido hoping for the foot to heal soon. So, imagine intensification of the pain when you see beautiful waves in front of you, but you just barely walk, with your foot cut open 😬 what to do?! Well, what I did was drinking smoothies in beach bars and started writing a book. So long story short, more or less, this is how and where the Blond Surf book was born. 😊🌴 After all I’m really proud and grateful for this life’s sign, which kept me still, in creative flow, to share what I have learnt in the past 10 years. 🌊 You never know Universe’s plan for you, so to Trust the process is a big value, which doesn’t go unnoticed. 🙏 P.S. I need photography advice !! I spent almost 2 days taking pictures of this watercolor. I tried every settings in my camera, I tried color calibration, raw format, post processing... And I'm still not happy with the colors ! The original watercolor is a bit different. The blue is greener, it is a beautiful jade color.
