This week I attended a conference in which the idea of being good enough was discussed. We talked about how when you're going through a loss or a hardship, sometimes all you can do is be good enough, and that's okay. Before the conference this week, I wrote this letter to myself that paints a pretty decent picture of this concept. Right now, I'm far from perfect, but I'm good enough. Flash back to my senior year of high school – I was wearing sweatshirts to school on the daily, I was taking classes that I knew wouldn’t exhaust me, and I was eager to get the hell out of dodge and move to Milwaukee. Around this time, I had switched my career sights from art and screenwriting to healthcare, psychology, and occupational therapy. I was grasping at a little bit of fun and a little bit of hope when I signed myself up for a creative writing class at school with a new teacher that quite frankly, most students didn’t like. Although I already had a really positive taste in my mouth about art and writing – that was, and still is, a big outlet for me – I jumped back in and found some of my potential in the craft. This week on The Murky Fishbowl, I’m showing the first piece of writing I remember feeling truly proud of and got positive recognition for, with added/revised content from today’s me. The prompt in my twelfth grade English class was to write the story of a picture we were handed. I was assigned a ripped out page from a magazine that showcased a mural on the wall of a classy restaurant, napkins folded and wine glasses at each seat. There is so much more to this story that hasn’t been written yet, but I’ve been eager to revisit it. Life gets murky, y'all. Some time ago, I was working to serve children and their families with mental health issues and trauma histories. I still do this work, but after I had a nightmare, I realized how important it truly was to take care of myself. This is a version of what I dreamt the night that it hit me, after working with a youth that was on the brink of suicide. To anyone out there who reads this, know these things: -It's not a light-hearted read and may very well be triggering. Do not read this if you feel that it could put you in a mental space you are not equipped to handle at this time. If you choose to read it, the link is in my bio. -You should be the most important person to you. No matter what you do or how you spend your time, you deserve to be cared for. Do something for your health daily, and especially check in with yourself mentally. -Asking for help is hard and it's also 100% okay.
