Happy birthday #catherinedeneuve one of the most exquisite beauties ever. We went to Vienna to shoot a cover story for Look Magazine where she was filming Mayerling with Omar Sharif. We stayed at the Sacher hotel and photographed in the Royal Suite I explored museums and discovered Sacher torte. Vienna is mysterious in the winter. We went to the mountains over the new year with @susanpierres we had a lot of time to work on stories then . The cover on Look Magazine said Catherine Deneuve was possibly the most beautiful woman on the world and American readers complained about the dark roots in her blond hair . Apparently it’s National Hat Day, so it seems the perfect day to share one of the most iconic hats in American history, Abraham Lincoln’s top hat. 🎩 When I visited the Washington DC in November of 2023 one of my must see items was this top hat on display at the Smithsonian’s Museum of American National History. This is the exact top hat that Abraham Lincoln wore to Ford’s Theater on that fateful April night in 1865, when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. The hat has been in the collection of the Smithsonian since 1867, but sat in the basement for almost 25 years before being giving on loan to a small museum across from Ford’s Theater to be put on display. When that museum closed, the hat returned to the Smithsonian where it has been on and off display for years in different exhibits, and has become one of the most treasured artifacts in the Smithsonian’s collection. I was grateful to have visited the Smithsonian when it was on display, and it literally gave me goosebumps to stand next to it and see it in person and to think that Abraham Lincoln touched that hat, and to imagine the tragic history that hat was witness to. We are incredibly honored to announce that a piece of our work is heading to The Smithsonian! The instrument that we created along with BBProps for the Broadway production of August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson is being donated to The Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture after the Broadway revival completes its run on January 29th. This intricately detailed prop was designed by the show's scenic designer, Beowulf Boritt, and the structure was built by our studio-neighbors at BBProps. The panels of the instrument, which depict scenes from the life of the family at the center of this story, were sculpted by Four Horsemen Studios’ Bill Mancuso in the style of Makonde art. The Makonde are an ethnic group in southeast Tanzania, northern Mozambique, and Kenya. The Makonde developed their culture on the Mueda Plateau in Mozambique. At present they live throughout Tanzania and Mozambique, and have a small presence in Kenya. Makonde art often depicts scenes of daily life, and that is what was needed for the piano. Using Z-brush, Bill digitally sculpted these panels. The large scene at the front of the instrument told the story of the Charles family matriach, while other panels featured other members of the family over the years. The panels were 3D-printed and added to the structure of the piano, which even included a keyboard so it could be played and light effects added by the design team for the production. To say that we are blown away by the reaction this piece has received is an understatement. Thank you to everyone involved in this project and for everyone who enjoyed seeing this prop on stage. In 1986, The Queen is Dead, by the English band The Smiths, was released, really defining and putting indie really as an attitude, as a genre on the map. Led by... Infamous vocalist Morrissey, the band also featured an even more important element: Johnny Marr, Marr's lines pretty much gave birth to what every indie pop guitarist would try to do for years, being heavy, high-pitched and always relentless. . In addition, Morrisey's voice has a theatricality that continued the tradition started by Byrne of eccentric vocals. After the first half of the 80's, musicians really started to get restless, the world seemed to have no solutions, and sincerity and even a little bit of hope that would come from the 60s and 70s began to be replaced by irony, cynicism and introspection. When Bob Nelson turned 85, we celebrated his Annual Exhibit by including works from the 60’s through the 90’s.
