Historical Zaddies 20/50 Atilla the Hun, c. 5th Century AD
Calypsonian and politician Raymond Quevedo, also known as Atilla the Hun, documented different aspects of life in Trinidad and Tobago through his calypso. Born on March 24th, 1892, his politically-charged lyrics which addressed topics like corruption, colonialism and the exploitation of civil rights, eventually became censored by the colonial authorities. In response to this censorship, he wrote the song “The Banning of Records” in 1939, which was subsequently banned. Some of his popular calypsos include “Inequality of Life,” “Where Was Butler?” “Abolish The Control Board,” “Commission’s Report,” “The Strike,” “Sedition Law,” “Where is the Sam Browne Belt?,” “Women Will Rule The World,” and “Guardian Beauty Contest,” which notably critiqued racism against dark-skinned contestants in the Carnival Queen Show. Another well-known calypso by Atilla was “Behind The Wall”—the melody of which was popularized by Harry Belafonte in his song “Jump In The Line.” Attila the Hun took home the Calypso Monarch title in 1946, and in the same year, was elected into the Port of Spain City Council. In 1950, he was voted into the Legislative Council to represent Laventille. Over the years, he also served as Deputy Mayor of Port of Spain, and was involved with the Trinidad Labour Party (TLP) and the Carnival Improvement Committee. Quevedo passed away on February 22nd, 1962 at the age of 69. He was posthumously awarded the Public Service Medal of Merit in 1972. His book, “Atilla’s Kaiso: A Short History of Trinidad Calypso,” which he co-authored with John La Rose, was published in 1983. Raymond Quevedo (1892–1962), better known as Atilla the Hun, was a calypsonian from Trinidad. He began singing in 1911 and was at his most prominent in the 1930s and 1940s. He was one of the pioneers in spreading awareness of calypso beyond its birthplace in Trinidad and Tobago. Together with the Roaring Lion (Rafael de Leon) he brought calypso to the US for the first time in 1934. One of his popular calypsos was “FDR in Trinidad,” commemorating President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1936 trip to Trinidad. Atilla competed in the first Calypso King contest in 1939, and won the title in both 1946 and 1947. Known as a defender of the poor, Atilla was able to transition to a political career. When several of his records were censored he composed “The Banning of Records,” which was itself banned. Atilla was the first calypsonian to hold elected public office; he was elected to the Port of Spain City Council in 1946 and was elected to the Legislative Council of Trinidad and Tobago in 1950 representing the St. George County East. He also authored Atilla’s Kaiso: A Short History of Trinidad Calypso with John La Rose, published posthumously in 1983.

Flavius Aëtius, known as Aëtius, was a Roman general in the late Western Roman Empire. He came from an aristocratic family with a military tradition. Aëtius rose through the ranks due to his military skills. He defended the Western Roman Empire against barbarian invasions and formed a pragmatic alliance with Attila the Hun to deter his invasion. Aëtius commanded a combined Roman and Visigothic army against Attila in the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains in 451 AD. Despite his successes, Aëtius faced political intrigue and was assassinated in 454 AD. Ύστερα, ξεκίνησε η πολιορκία της Ορλεάνης, με τον βασιλιά της οποίας, αν και ο Αττίλας είχε συνεννοηθεί να παραδώσει την πόλη, τελικά εκείνος επέλεξε να αντισταθεί, αφού ο Θεωδόριχος και ο Αέτιος τον ενισχύσουν στην οχύρωση της πόλης. 🏛 Μετά από μερικές εβδομάδες πολιορκίας, οι Ούννοι διέρρηξαν τα τείχη και θα ξεκίνησαν την λεηλασία. Τότε ο Αέτιος, μαζί με τα στρατεύματα του ρωμαϊκού συνασπισμού, εμφανίστηκε μετά από παράκληση του Ανιανού στο πεδίο της μάχης και τους απώθησε από την πόλη. Ο Αττίλας διάλεξε να υποχωρήσει, γνωρίζοντας ότι η περιοχή δεν επέτρεπε στο ιππικό του να κινηθεί ελεύθερα. Τότε οι Αλανοί της πόλης, μαζί με άτομα από διάφορες άλλες φυλές, υποστήριξαν τον Αέτιο. Έπειτα, ο Ρωμαίος στρατηγός κυνήγησε τα στρατεύματα του Αττίλα και τελικά οι δύο στρατοί συγκρούστηκαν στα Καταλαυνικά Πεδία. ⚔️ Όσον αφορά την συγκεκριμένη μάχη, υπάρχουν πολλά πράγματα για τα οποία δεν είμαστε σίγουροι. Αρχικά, ουδείς γνωρίζει με ακρίβεια πού ακριβώς έλαβε χώρα η μάχη των εθνών. Ωστόσο, υποθέτουμε ότι πραγματοποιήθηκε κοντά στην σημερινή Τρουά. 🔴🔵 Παράλληλα, η ιστορική κοινότητα αδυνατεί να συμφωνήσει στο μέγεθος των δύο στρατών και, ως εκ τούτου, υπάρχουν πολλά διαθέσιμα νούμερα. Roma'da büyük bir düğün yapma teklifi aldı ve bu teklifi kabul etti. Bu sayede yağmalama ve tahribat planlarını erteledi. İtalya'da bulunduğu süre boyunca, Roma'nın gücünü gördü ve kendini gerçek bir imparator olarak tanımladığı bilinir. Atilla'nın hükümdarlığı beklenmedik bir şekilde son buldu. Bir gece, düğün kutlamalarının ortasında ani bir şekilde hayata veda etti. Bu ölüm, bir dönemin sonunu ve Hun İmparatorluğu'nun parçalanmasını simgeliyordu. Last night we attended the SPAB Heritage Awards. Amongst other awards the SPAB 2020-21 & 2022 Scholars & Fellows recieved their certificates; the John Betjamin Prize was awarded, this time with separate awards for England & Wales, Scotland & Ireland; Britain's Best Loved award; etc..... Each winner of an award was gifted a specially handmade brick from Bulmer Brick & Tile. A fascinating resource on calypso history written by none other than Raymond Quevedo who sang calypso as Atilla The Hun in the first half of the 20th century. A participant in Trinidad carnival culture from the 1910s onward, he was one of a golden generation of calypsonians which included Roaring Lion, Lord Executor, Lord Beginner, The Caresser, Growling Tiger, Lord Invader, King Radio, and others well-known to fans of old time kaiso. He later became city councillor and deputy mayor of Port-of-Spain, president general of the Trinidad Labour Party, and member of many civic organisations ranging from the Carnival Improvement Committee to the Railway Board. French Creole, as said before became the predominant language of Plantation calypso. Lead singers who would be backed by vocal harmonics became known as griots & then in the years to come, the name was replaced by chantuelle & ultimately the modern title calypsonian. To give a few more details Trinidadian slaves were branded, as a mark of their being no more than property. Slaves were often kept in chains, & sometimes connected by yokes at the neck. As said before families & people stolen from the same villages. Servitude was enforced by the 'cat O' 9 tails'. As said before those who the imperialists deemed unruly could be murdered. In addition to hanging, shooting & being whipped to death included being boiled alive in vats of boiling sugar cane molasses. From this dreadful environment emerged what is on the surface perhaps the happiest of all musical genres, associated with run, dance, parties & carnivals. The roots of Trinidadian carnivals go back to late 18th century French owned Plantations, or ultimately African Kikingo - a precess dance ritual from Congo. The name would be corrupted to Canboul under colonialism, or Kambules in Trinidad vernacular. The word Calypso, which is drawn from the French word carrouseaux, would not be used till a century later. As previous stated in the late 18th Century at the invitation from the Spanish King, many low life French colonialists moved to Trinidad to be plantation owners. These murderous bastards thought of themselves as Christians. At Christmas time, it was their tradition to hold religious processions or carnivals. Their shackled human slaves were of course forbidden from attending. The 1st Trinidadian carnivals were as a protest against slavery - the beginning of the emancipation movement on the island. Singing slaves gathered as their so called masters partied & got drunk in "holy celebration". The captive men & women burnt sugar can sticks in protest. Makeshift drums were constructed.
