The Tams-Hey Girl, Don’t Bother Me b/w Take Away. 1964 Probe, Ireland. This obscure soul two sider was originally released on ABC-Paramount in the USA. Probe Records was their International arm to distribute records overseas. This particular Irish pressing is pretty rare. The A side is a slower ballad type. The B side is where this thing gets moving. 31st March 2024 marked the 75th anniversary of the first 45RPM vinyl single release. If there was an original statement of intent behind this cultural phenomenon then one of the sub clauses would have asked that the releases should strive to be life affirming and speak to the soul. Undoubtedly The Tams fulfilled that criteria and more with the joyous and exquisite 1968 release Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy! The youth may have long gone and the happiness is intermittent these days but the foolishness is undiminished!! I am playing there a huge hit young be foolish be happy. The band is from the good old days when they stalked the stage and earned the applause. Back in the day groups sang and danced for their money. I don’t know what label they’re were on, but it felt like Motown. And these players took that work ethic from the early or family members. They totally earn their $2500 Parents fee probably split 10 ways. And they did it in matching outfits! They lead the musical phenomenon called beach music, which is huge in the Carolinas. It’s a place where shagging means dancing, not you know why! Kind of reminds me of seeing the Jackson 5 back at the old Americana hotel on Bal Harbour Beach when Michael had his original nose! Walked into Landfill Rescue Unit Records today and almost immediately ran across this title that’s been on my list for quite some time. The Tams formed in 1960 while in high school in Atlanta, Georgia, performing at local clubs for $1.25 a night. Their namesake was inspired by their trademark multi-colored tam hats. Eventually, their persistent performance schedule paid off with a record deal. The second single off their first album, “What Kind of Fool (Do You Think I Am)” would surge to #9 on the Hot 100 in February of 1964 and establish the act as an R&B force for decades.
