Yesterday morning in Māwhera Greymouth began with a ride on the cycleway stopping at ‘the tiphead’, a spot my grandparents visited often (daily, I think) to look at the view once walking on the beach was no longer manageable. My love of nature is deep-rooted, a gift from all of my grandparents. I guess I was always destined to spend so much of my time observing the beauty all around us. As a kid I spent many hours walking with Nana and Grandad on the beach here, marvelling at all the stones, or in the bush having the different plants and wildlife pointed out, times for which I’m very grateful. If you’re not afraid of the dark you need to ride or hike through this old train tunnel turned trail! It’s called the📍Snoqualmie Tunnel in Hyak, WA at the Hyak Trailhead with @wastatepks and it’s part of the 250-mile Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail. We took a family bike ride there in over the weekend and had a bit of a thrill entering this dark, cold place. 😱 🪧Trail details: •it’s an out-and-back through the darkness and took us 30 mins to bike one way with a few stops inside. 🌌 •Start at Hyak and head west on the trail, it’s easily one of the spookiest trails we’ve been on but the trail is mostly flat, so it’s good for families. •This tunnel is 2.3 miles in almost complete darkness, so you must have lights! Use headlamps, a flashlight and/or reflective gear. Our big flashlight went out so remember to bring extra batteries. 🔋 •Wear a jacket or layers, the chill inside the tunnel made our hands very cold. Said 50° on our thermometer but felt colder! 🥶 •At the end of the tunnel, there are picnic tables and a waterfall, before you turn to head back. When I was a kid, I would visit my grandparents house which had railroad tracks about 100 yards from the back door. I lived in that house for my last year and a half of high school. My uncle lives there now. The tracks originally carried Milwaukee Road freight, and then eventually Union Pacific. The entire house would shake when the freights came rumbling through. Sometimes they'd wake me up at night. I have fond memories of those trains; Smashing pennies on the tracks, finding old spikes, and counting the cars as they went by. I think that's why I love the old rail trails so much.
