Best day yet … rambling over monte and through forest so familiar (bursting with eucalypts) yet so strange. Crystal clear water, fresh cool air. Blisters on toes. The kindness of strangers. Camino Portugues day 4 - Anha to Vila Praia de Ancora: a shorter day with plenty more forest and cooling narrow walled lanes. We saw an amazing church decorated with Portuguese tiles and a fresco roof, and another covered in flowers for ascension day. To change things up, I ate some ungodly Portuguese food (a francesinha burger) and we ended the day watching the sun set over the beach. 16.3m / 26.3km

🥾 Tag 10 auf dem Camino Dies war die erste Nacht, in der mir so kalt war, dass ich meinen Schlafsack hervorkramte. Die Tagesdecke war einfach zu dünn und die Mollidecke im Schrank wollte ich nicht nehmen. Also hat auch dieses Gepäckstück seine Mitführberechtigung erhalten. 😏 Nun musste auch mal ausgenutzt werden, dass direkt unten im Hotel ein Café war und ich habe ausnahmsweise noch gefrühstückt. Dann den Weg wieder direkt zum Stand nach unten. CAMINO PORTUGUESE, DAY 1 The idea was to start walking from the cathedral in Porto at 9:00 so I will enjoy my 28 km ahead and reach my destination in the afternoon. Well in a perfect case scenario applying to 99% of peregrinos, but not me 😅🙈. Of course the reality was completely different - my water ‘camel’ bag leaked and peed all over my backpack so my morning consisted of drying it with a hairdryer. Even the second attempt after the reparation process of the waterbag wasn’t successful, which resulted in wet backpack (this time much less though) and a taxi trip to Decathlon. Another thing was a surgery of my backpack with a needle and a threat one kind Portguuese man gave me a day before. All together meant that I started from the cathedral at 11:30. With a positive mindset and perfect weather I kicked off my journey - alongside Portuguese coast which was a real treat 😍. Beaches, sound of waves, grass, cosy bars from time to time otherwise silence (as all peregrinos were probably already done for that day). What a shock it was when - on the way - I found out it was actually 36 km 😅. When I arrived to my hostel slightly before 9pm in Villa do Conde, I felt like a fallen soldier going for his death walk 🙈. And thought about how I would manage the next days, because those legs were not ready for such speedy start. The beautiful hostel with a kind receptionist (even though she didn’t show the level of admiration to my heroic performance as I expected in my imagination 😅) together with a grilled squid and wine were the best cure to my doubtful spirit and exhausted body though. Day 23: Camino Portuguese (Villanova de Arouca to Santiago de Compostela). “Finished … It Remains” So, I reached Santiago de Compostela this afternoon. Marking the official end of my Camino Portuguese. The day started with a 38km boat ride, which had complimentary dolphins provided. Then a 28 km hike; starting at 10:15. I must have been on it today. Because, it was all over, and I reached the finish before 15:15. I didn’t stop at all and never took my pack off. For the first time in my life, no other hiker overtook me all day I just seemed to pass everyone else. There was also a group of cyclists that I kept being over taken by, then overtaking them a few minutes later. This lasted for about 10km, which makes me think I was walking pretty fast today. However, I will admit that the group didn’t seem to be the most competent cyclists, …. but still! It was one of those days when it just felt like the kilometres just kept melting away. Santiago de Compostela is a truly beautiful city. And it felt special to get here. I finished the day off with some great food and wine. I am staying in a converted seminary. So, I think the little, spartan, room I am staying in was once occupied by young monks or priests. Now, it’s time for bed, because this is not really over just yet and I want a super early start tomorrow with about 50km ahead of me 👣👣👣. #caminoportugues #caminoportugues2024
Camino Portugues Day 9: Redondela to Pontevedra. Despite the two hills we had to climb the walk to Pontevedra was quite nice and I was feeling a little better compared to yesterday. The complementary route through the woodland along the river was refreshing. Pontevedra was a really nicer town compared to Vigo. Would rather be here if I had to take a rest day. More quaint and less commercial. Finally I attended Ascention mass and I think God is really God. I prayed for Catholics to like attend mass with or have a chat with. And guess what after mass when I was getting a pizza I saw some other Asian from mass and was wondering where they were from. Found out they were Singaporeans. Jesus didn’t just give me Catholics but Singaporean Catholics. It felt good to speak Singlish and just chat with them while we stood eating our pizzas. Day 11 of the Way of Light is from Matthew 28:19-20 which ends with “I am with you always to the end of the age.” Jesus you are truly with me and you hear and answer me. Let me have hope in you and trust you have a plan for me. Not sure how things will turn out tomorrow. Day 2: Lisbon to Santa Iria de Azoia. 14 miles/ 4:45 hours. A plaque outside of the small Church of Santiago in Lisbon marks the start of the Camino Portugues. The final 7 miles is a pleasant walk along the Tejo river most of it via a brand new nature boardwalk designed to view migratory birds along the Tejo estuary. Camino Portugues Day 36 ***** We instantly loved the vibe of the town of Caldas de Reis. Our amazing hospitalero Jesus didn't only let us stay in a private room in a shared apartment, but also gave us great tips on what to do around the town. To do it all, we decided to stay for another day and were more than happy with our decision. The town has thermal springs (both paid and free), a botanical garden, a good supermarket, a cheap bar, friendly locals, playgrounds and a waterfall nearby. We walked about 2,5km to the waterfall. The path was off the camino. It was short but beautiful. The river was flowing on the side, sometimes even through the old stone houses. Above the waterfall, there was an abandoned power station. An interesting place to discover. The colours of the evening sky were incredible, when we were returning to our 'temporary home'. A part of the Albergue Peregrinos Caldas de Reis has rooms above the river and one of the kitchens has balcony over the river and its old bridges. We liked the view a lot. Very often, the best things on our journey are those we don't see coming. The moment, the place was perfect. We felt very grateful and lucky that the three of us could experience this together. Fali mi kava, sanjam croissant… i idemo tako kroz neko selo, par puta kraj nas prođe neki mali pickup…stane skoro kod svih vrata u selu i na kvaku objesi vrećicu s pecivima. U jednom momentu zaustavio se kraj nas i dao nam vrećicu sa šest peciva. Kao da je znao što mi treba!!! (btw-kad ste zadnji put nekom potpunom strancu nešto poklonili i uljepšali mu dan?… ja znam da odavno nisam… i ne ponosim se time) Malo kasnije i kava je stigla. Today was a good day. Leaving Marinhas for Viana do Castelo, the weather was so nice, not very sunny, not very windy. It was a part of going on the main road (near cars), but also going through a forest and on a bridge over Cadavo river. Unfortunately, to arrive to the Albergue, I had to climb a lot of stairs.
