•the narrowest stairs• Lots of cities still utilize their Union Stations as, you know, train stations. Tulsa is not one of them (the building is still there, but it’s private office space). Delayed gratification. A belated birthday treat at Carette, a salon de thé that’s been around since 1927. The interior is designed by Hubert de Givenchy and is situated on the Place des Voges, the oldest planned square in Paris (my favorite). •she made it!• So what happened is that there was time for us to just wander around the Greenwood District in Tulsa the other morning. We could tell as soon as we left the hotel that Something Was Going On – streets were blocked off and there was a steady stream of people walking with great purpose, all going the same direction. Later we figured it out, when we noticed the end of the annual Heart Walk. (We may be slow, but we can – with ample context clues – eventually figure stuff out. In this case, we got a strong assist from the giant sign that said FINISH LINE and a few hundred people wearing Heart Walk shirts. Perhaps I ought to consider a career in something related to sleuthing?) •family• This is just a block away from my office, so I drive by it often. And for some reason, April 16 was the day I noticed it and recognized it for what it was: a photographic opportunity. So on April 17 I brought my camera to work. (I also spent some time that day driving around, seeking a particular body shop that I had very specific recollections of. My memories were that it was a corrugated metal building, that it had an unevenly-painted business name right on the metal, that there was a car – an old Impala? – parked in front, that it was on my right as I faced east. Hot Takes: How do you keep from melting a rocket engine with all that fire blasting out? In fact, the heat of a rocket engine is so much it will melt any of the metals we know how to make. But with some ingenuity, they figured out a trick a long time ago that I think is interesting. I got to visit the US Space and Rocket Center not long ago and this time shared the experience with my wife. Thanks honey for wanting to go there so that I got to visit it again! It's kind of nice visiting a place more than once and be able to get some of the pictures that didn't come out so well the first time. Though I'll admit, when I get to the place, I need to be better prepared as my mind went mostly blank except for a couple of them as to what I found I was missed while editing previous pics. Oh well, it's fun to see a place again regardless. So how did they make the engine work? It's a well known method, but I still like it. They sent some of "cold" fuel down the outside of the engine bell which soaked up enough of the heat to keep it below the metal's melting point. In the 2nd pic you see the lines going down the bell. It's actually made of "pipes" that open at the bottom which is what you see close up on end in the first pic. I love great engineering and the patterns they make.
