How's the writing going? They talk about there being two kinds of writers, pantsers (who write by the seat of their pants, thinking up the story as it falls off their fingers onto the page) and planners (who think up the story in advance and write to pre-determined points in a strategic way). I'm most definitely the latter. Mostly because I have so much anxiety about blank pages that I can't write anything at all if I don't know where I'm going before I begin. I've also know a lot of people who started out as pantsers, but then they took my Plot Storming course and it transformed their experience. It made them write faster, better, richer stories. It prompted me to look up the original fairy tale, which made me wonder how I would retell a fairy tale and make it my own. And nowโฆ. I guess I have a new book idea I may not have the full amount of time I need in order to fully commit, but Iโm going to foster this as a fun side project. Finished reading chapter 14 as part of my first complete read-through of Dark Hills. I'm now 55% of the way through reading the first draft. I do try to avoid writing down notes at this stage, but had to give in today as I reached the point where I wanted to include an extra scene that's been stored only in my head for a few months now ... I don't know how I managed to keep it there for so long but I'm not risking losing it as its far too good for that! This change also led to a decision to split chapter 14, as it feels better after the new idea I had. So now my book has an extra chapter ๐ ๐คทโโ๏ธ. Good news is that when I wrote chapter 14, I wasn't keen on it, but reading it back I actually quite like it. I can see that when I make those changes it will be even better. On a side note, I've discovered that I can listen to music whilst reading and still concentrate on the words if that music is in a language I don't understand, so I'm listening to 'Que ta tรชte fleurisse toujours' - @mikainstagram 's latest album as I barely understand a word of French๐ #writingprocess #writingupdate #writerslife #WritingCommunity #amediting #firstdraft #historicalsuspense #HistoricalFiction #suspensethrillers #1920sfiction #amreading #DarkHills

When it's time to start a new chapter, do you press enter until you reach the start of a new page? And has your chapter title ever wound up in the middle of a page by accident because you edited the length of the chapter before it? Today's #palindrome week tip will help you avoid that! Instead of formatting your chapter titles manually, use the Styles feature! I've used "Heading 1" for the screenshot, but I often create a dedicated style for chapter headings. Either way, go into the settings for that style and make sure you've selected "page break before." Then, the next time you're ready to start a new chapter, just click on the category in the Styles pane and it'll automatically pop you down to the next page! Even if you adjust chapter 1 in a million different ways, chapter 2 will always start fresh on its own page. Not a novelist? This works for picture books too! I didn't need multiple headings for my palindrome-packed picture book WAS IT A CAT I SAW? (available now!), but I used this trick to keep the back matter nicely formatted for my second book, which comes out next year. (Note: I'm working in Microsoft Word for Windows.
