PETROGLYPH NATIONAL MONUMENT- Piedras Marcadas Canyon is the northern most area of Petroglyph National Monument accessible to the public where a significant quantity of petroglyphs can be viewed. The name "Piedras Marcadas" means "canyon of marked rocks". The location of the canyon is in very close proximity to the urban sprawl of Albuquerque but the small canyon has the largest concentration of petroglyphs of any of the monument's trails. It is estimated that at least 5,000 glyphs are concentrated in this area. . . Besides having fun, the educational part of traveling is what I look most forward to. Taos Plaza- Is the Heart of Taos. This is the center of the Taos Historic District where locals gather for Taos Plaza Live concerts, May through October and visitors enjoy the shops and galleries that surround the Plaza all year long. The original Spanish settlement of scattered farms evolved in Taos Valley about 1615. In 1680, the settlers were driven out by the Pueblo Revolt. Spanish authority was not reestablished until 1696 with the reconquest by Don Diego de Vargas. The area was firmly resettled by 1710. In 1796 the Don Fernando de Taos Land Grant was given to 63 families by the King of Spain. This resulted in the Map of Taos Plaza establishment of the current Taos Plaza and surrounding community. Don Fernando de Taos became the most important settlement in the area outside of the ancient San Geronimo de Taos Pueblo two miles to the north. Homes were built in large quadrangles, thus offering a fortress-like structure. Hostile raiding Indians from outside the Taos area were thwarted in their attempts to enter the village. Sentries stationed at the corners of the fortified village kept vigil day and night. A huge gate offered the only means of entry and exit to and from the Plaza. The enclosure served as a refuge for livestock at night, and merchants displayed their wares there during trade fairs. Over the years, there were many fires within the Plaza and many buildings were lost and rebuilt. Because the buildings were contiguous, a fire in one usually spread to others. The character of the present structures around the Plaza dates from the 1930s. The Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness is a rolling landscape of badlands which offers some of the most unusual scenery found in the Four Corners Region. Time and natural elements have etched a fantasy world of strange rock formations made of interbedded sandstone, shale, mudstone, coal, and silt. The weathering of the sandstone forms hoodoos - weathered rock in the form of pinnacles, spires, cap rocks, and other unusual forms. Fossils occur in this sedimentary landform. Translated from the Navajo language, Bisti (Bis-tie) means "a large area of shale hills." Jerome, Arizona-Once known as the wickedest town in the west, Jerome was born a copper mining camp, growing from a settlement of tents into a roaring mining community. . After its founding in 1876, Jerome was at one time the fourth largest city in Arizona with the population peaking at around 15,000 in the 1920’s. World War II greatly increased the demand for copper, but after the war, demand decreased dramatically. With Jerome’s economy completely dependent upon the demand for copper, Phelps Dodge Mine closed in 1953. The remaining population of around 50 to 100 people promoted the town as a historic ghost town. In 1967, Jerome was designated a National Historic District by the federal government. Today, Jerome is a thriving tourist and artist hub with a population of around 450 people. Jerome resides above what was once the largest copper mine in Arizona which was producing an astonishing 3 million pounds of copper per month. Historic Tombstone-The most famous event in Tombstone Arizona's long history was the famed "Gunfight at the OK Corral". On October 26, 1881, members of the so-called "Cowboys" had a run-in with Wyatt, Virgil and Morgan Earp with help from Wyatt's friend Doc Holliday. 24 seconds and 30 shots later, Billy Clanton, Tom and Frank McLaury were mortally wounded. Top Gun house and bar- We were fortunate to visit the house in its original location just before they moved it to a newly built resort nearby. We also visited the restaurant/bar from the movie as well. . . "Locals and returning visitors to Oceanside, California might have noticed a significant change along the beach town’s coastline in the last few weeks: A bright blue Victorian house that’s been sitting on the corner of Pacific Street and Seagaze Drive for the past 132 years is suddenly gone, replaced by a construction site. But not to worry: The cottage, famous for its role in the 1986 blockbuster movie Top Gun, has been temporarily moved to a parking lot one block away, where it currently sits tucked away behind fencing and office trailers. Built in 1887, the Graves House is one of the oldest in Oceanside, and one of only a few from the era that remain standing. . “The particular design of this building is called Folk Victorian, which is rare in San Diego County,” says John Daley, vice president of the Oceanside Historical Society. “That’s really the reason we were able to keep it, the rarity of the style of building.” The Folk Victorian style was developed in the late 1800s as a less elaborate—and cheaper—alternative to more ornate Victorian architecture. But despite representing a more modest style, the Graves House is a rare architectural jewel in San Diego—and during its heyday it was one of the more elegant houses on the block. . It was featured in the iconic Tom Cruise film as the beachfront home of Charlie, Cruise’s on-screen love interest played by actress Kelly McGillis.
