Yesterday, a cruise email caught my eye and I decided to click and daydream for a couple of minutes about actually being able to book and go on a cruise. 10-days in the Western Caribbean, yes please! 7-nights on the Mexican Riviera, sign me up! I read an article on Monday that the CDC is reviewing guidelines that cruises will need to follow and cruising in the US could open up in the next month. What do you think? Have you been fly fishing? It was a first for the girls in our family and we all loved it. Who would love pulling on waterproof boots and wearing these classy waders? It was fun to try something new and get to spend time outdoors. We fished in the afternoon and the fish were not super active but we got to catch and release a few and enjoyed time together. One of my favorite aspects of traveling is getting to enjoy my kids' enjoyment of the things we are doing. I love going to Disneyland and walking down Main Street while enjoying a churro. But it's also so enjoyable to watch my kids enjoy their churro on Main Street. It's so fun to board a plane and know that we are heading off on an adventure. But I also love watching my kids' excitement as they anticipate seeing a new place. I love going to the beach and feeling the cool ocean air. Cabin life! Who is looking for a fun and easy getaway right now? Although we are not traveling to the places we had originally planned on visiting this summer, we are still finding ways to get away and enjoy some time together. We decided to get away with another family for a long weekend and it was just what we needed. Getting a break from the Phoenix heat was perfect. We choose a cabin on @airbnb that was just two hours from our house in Forrest Lakes, AZ. We brought all of our food and just stayed at the house for the weekend enjoying time playing yard games, sitting by the outdoor fireplace, playing card games, and reading. It was quiet, peaceful, and relaxing. Just what we needed. Where are you planning to go this summer?
Since we aren't traveling far from home right now, I'm having fun looking back through old trip pictures and reminiscing about past trips. One of our favorite ways to travel is on a cruise ship because we get to see so many different places without needing to repack our bags each day. We've been able to stop at several Mexican ports and we always have a fabulous time. We love the culture, friendly people, the food, the beaches, and the shops. When we cruise, we like to book our own 3rd party excursions ahead of time or just get off the boat and see what we can find. There is usually someone at the port ready to sell us an adventure when we visit a port in Mexico. When we stopped in Cozumel, we had arranged for a van to take our group to see the ruins in Tulum. We highly recommend doing this! We were traveling with one other family and had a total of 10 people in our group. The tour included the drive to the ruins, admission & tour at the ruins, time for shopping, lunch, and a ride back to the boat. Such a fun way to spend a day! If we ever get to cruise to Cozumel again, I'd love to spend time exploring right around the city.
I don't know about you, but I'm always happy to take a trip to the beach. We got to visit the beach back in March and my sister snapped this picture of Ward and I having a relaxing moment. The kids were home and we didn't have our sweet Indie dog yet, so I guess we were pretty relaxed! Last weekend our family decided to take a very last minute adventure and drive over to Oceanside, California for the weekend with some friends. We wanted some cool ocean breezes and a change of scenery. It's a quick 6-hour drive from our house. We rented a place on the beach and enjoyed a lot of beachside walks. It was a pretty simple getaway where we brought along a lot of our food, did some takeout, watched our kids swim in the ocean, played games, watched movies, and enjoyed time together. On our first family trip to NYC ten years ago, my sister @ktarh2o joined us and was an amazing tour guide. She lived on Long Island for a few months and knew her way around the city. My favorite thing to do in NYC is attend a Broadway musical. We were not playing on seeing one this trip because we thought we didn't have time since we were only there three nights. One night we were going to the balloon inflation, no shows on Thanksgiving, and we had Rocketette's tickets on our third night in town. The teenagers were begging us to just look and see if there were Friday matinee tickets to a show.⠀ ⠀ They were in luck and we found five Hadestown tickets were available for us! This is a newer musical but Hannah and I had been listening to the music for a while so it was familiar to us. The singing was outstanding and we loved every minute of it. Badwater Basin is a basin in Death Valley National Park, noted as the lowest point in North America, with a depth of 282 ft below sea level. . . . We also visited Badwater last year and both times were during the Golden hour. I couldn't believe how different it looked this year compared to last. This year there was a bit of water throughout the basin which provided a glassy finish. Last year, the grounds were dry which provided a bright white finish. We just finished our two week winter trip. This trip was extra special because we were joined by my parents and my brother's family who made a surprise visit from Texas. Both of our families flew into Vegas without my parents knowing that my brother and his children were going to join us for the first half of the two week trip. We set the meet at Walmart before heading to Death Valley from Las Vegas. What an emotional time it was once my parents ran into my brother and his family. It was all uphill after that! . . Whether you’re walking, blading, running or cycling, you’ll be in good company on this well-traveled track. It was named one of the top urban bike paths in the country by USA Today. . . How Was the Garden of the Gods Formed? According to the exhibits at the Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center, the rock formations were created millions of years ago. The formation (and much of the Rockies) lies on a fault line that caused the slabs of rock to be tilted vertically into “fins” as the tectonic plates moved. The rocks get their red color from the hematite in the rock. Garden of the Gods is a public park located in Colorado Springs. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1971. . The Garden of the Gods' red rock formations were created during a geological upheaval along a natural fault line millions of years ago. Archaeological evidence shows that prehistoric people visited Garden of the Gods about 1330 BC. At about 250 BC, Native American people camped in the park; they are believed to have been attracted to wildlife and plant life in the area and used overhangs created by the rocks for shelter. The Broadmoor Seven Falls- Nathaniel Colby homesteaded 160 acres in South Cheyenne Canyon, including Seven Falls in December 1872. He sold the land rights nine months later for $1,000 (equivalent to $20,000 in 2018) to the Colorado Springs Land Company. In 1882, fearing logging operations would ruin the scenic area, naturalist James Hull purchased the property. By 1885, he owned 400 acres in the canyon. Hull built a stairway to the top of the falls and built a road through the canyon. Lake Isabel- We passed this beautiful lake while heading to Bishop's Castle. I had to go back after seeing the beauty from a distance. I've developed a liking for lakes with scenic backdrops and this one didn't disappoint. We were about to take a dip when a local advised us the lake was consumed with leeches. We had to settle for stone skipping into the lake! . . Bishop Castle is an "elaborate and intricate one-man project" named after its constructor, Jim Bishop, that has become a roadside attraction in central Colorado. According to Roadsideamerica, "for most" of the 50 years he has worked on the castle "Bishop was engaged in a running battle with Washington bureaucrats over the rocks that he used," which came from the National Forest surrounding his property. "Bishop felt that they were his for the taking, the government wanted to charge him per truckload." The site has become a tourist attraction, and Roadsideamerica.com devoted a chapter to the castle and rated it "major fun" and describing it as, "one man's massive-obsessive labor of medieval fantasy construction". But it also issued a "parent's alert," warning potential visitors that Jim Bishop is "a tough-talking man with strong, extreme beliefs, and sometimes he expresses them bluntly and loudly.
