When the Packs Collide!! 🦇 Rogue friend, wildlife biologist, and adventure pack leader, @jesreimer stopped by Rogues on her way home to Northern California, after chasing snow in Canada❄️. 😊 Psst: we worked with her on bat hibernacula surveys in Alaska a few years back! 🌪 We loved getting to snuggle up with her speed demons. Man does this spicy, long-legged crew make our working dog pups look tiny! 🐕🦺⛷️ While Rogues generally spends our winters preparing for upcoming projects (and trying to rest💤), The Reimer Pack spends theirs skijor racing in Canada. Our car hit six figures! 100,000 miles. This ship protected my Mama on multiple solo trips out west, including a flat tire in Canyonlands 🤦🏻♀️(not her favorite story to tell.) It has taken my family places I could never have imagined. We’ve picked dad up in Colorado after he finished the trail, Mama said I’m was a good co pilot. We’ve been bumping along down dirt roads, cruising down open highways, in the lowest parts of the desert and navigating the tallest mountain roads, coast to coast. She’s always done us proud, and is a beautiful sight at a trailhead after a long backpacking trip. Dad says we gonna love her till her wheels fall off or the frame rusts out. lol I am always ready for dad to give me my cue to “load up” ‘cuz I know we are heading out to the great wide open and wild corners of our world. Why do I find unparalleled solace in the rawness of untamed wilderness? In the places of such stark contrast, which beg not to be romanticised but demand respect and complete humbleness. The Isolation offers absolute tranquility and wonder, yet binds the wanderer to terms and conditions that promise daily challenges, often of the type 2 kind . This question is easy to answer internally; the response is a feeling that if you know it you know, it defies an explanation with words. For me, the challenge arises when attempting to convey it verbally or on the page; it would require writing a book to effectively express it. Maybe it’s a reason I gravitate so strongly to photography; a picture, after all, speaks a thousand unspoken words . Despite being suspended above certain death, only protected by a few nuts and bolts, my adrenaline-fuelled inner child offers a supportive hand to my adult sensibilities. While my brain calculates the risk and remains acutely aware of my surroundings, my heart takes over, giddily bouncing back and forth, back and forth. . There is something so primal and exhilarating about defying gravity and dancing with danger on these precarious crossings. With each liberating leap, I cast off the shackles of fear and behavioural expectation . For some, these bouncy bridges are an exhilarating step out of the comfort zone. For me, they are a playground of calculated risk and the thrill of truly living with the wild spirit of the river . (Having fun comes with respect. The climb up from lake Teusajaure was a steep one but with plenty of time to recover at the top, hiding behind a giant solitary boulder watching the reindeer graze. I had a Walter Mitty snow leopard moment, as a mother and calf wandered tantalising close I had not a single desire to break the moment with the click of the shutter . Sometimes I think it’s desperately sad that so many memories held only by an individual are lost to the obsoleteness of time. Moments of incandescent joy, forgotten never to be exhumed. We experience so much, but what happens when we no longer remember the times we chose to just be . I am terrible at keeping a journal on trail (and in daily life), easily persuaded by tiredness or distraction. It is something I regret almost instantly when I get home and try to look back through a fog of my own making. Sometimes afterwards I wish I’d got a shot or two, sometimes it gets me down yet when I think about it, and how those precious moments still make me feel, like an undocumented glorious evening spent in the Lookout on Skye, nothing could have made me break being present . Yes I am scared I will forget and maybe I should write more like the generations of explorers before us whose only option was the pen. But maybe it’s ok to forget, we after all can’t remember everything, like books read long ago whose plot now a mystery but the ones that really matter always leave behind a feeling. And feelings take longer to erase. . Instagram is no longer what it was. Maybe I simply look back with romanticised nostalgia, a mandala effect of believing there was a time when this polaroid iconed platform was a community, one that supported budding photographers and storytellers aside those simply wishing to share snapshots of their daily life for no other reason than connection with their circles. Or maybe it hasn’t changed at all maybe I did. . When I began my page there was no concept of the word ‘influencer’, those shallow like seekers following trend after trend on a merry go round in search of engagement for what? Self driven bloodhounds sniffing out deals to be had to line pockets not sooth a desperate innate desire to create. . I ask myself why I continue, why bother at all. To pour my heart, soul, blood, sweat and tears into every photograph I produce, dedicating hour after hour of precious little free time to my art. Where once my images were freely shared with thousands to lucky if my own friends and family are even shown them. Is it all for nothing? . I am not disillusioned, I may wear contacts but the reality of making it as a photographer is 20/20. After all it is the hard journeys we often look back on with most fondness right? . This maybe a silly little app but it is not pointless, I remind myself with hands in empty pockets. For it perpetuates in me a Darwinian desire for evolution, a continued reason to reaffirm vows of dedication to my craft. A challenge to practise and shake off the self shame of years of being bullied into believing no words I wrote would ever have merit. . The last boat crossing - Teusajaure . My affection for ‘messing around in boats’ is vast, although I don’t often get the opportunity. A love of the water is a love that is hard to explain unless to those, who through their experience, have felt it. . We are of course all made up of it, an elixir of life that on some level must call us to bodies of its kin. It is something to observe it but to venture out across offers a deeper sense of that pioneering spirit of adventure, to leave one shore behind heading towards the unknown newness that awaits on another. A deep sense of power yet contrasted by humbleness and a restorative tranquility that is grounded by the possibility of danger. . On the Kungsleden crossing the lakes by boat is merely a necessity, to get from a to b in a time frame that allows this glorious trail to be completed in one go. It is remarkable to see the mountains from the prospective of the water but they did on the whole cause a faint heartbeat of anxiety, one that maybe isn’t felt in high season. . I loved each crossing but I was so glad when the final one was completed. I began my trail at the end of the season knowing that on September 17th they would cease totally, there was a real risk of becoming stuck literally in the middle of nowhere should I have delays. Thankfully I could now look back across Teusajaure knowing that I could now relax into trail life. . . .
