ICYMI: Nine inmates at Buckingham Correctional Center recently became the first individuals incarcerated in a VADOC facility to receive certification as Peer Recovery Specialists (PRS). Peer Recovery Specialists are self-identified people with lived experience with a mental health and/or Substance Use Disorder (SUD) who are in successful and ongoing recovery from mental health and/or SUD challenges. Through their experiences, PRS support other people’s recovery journeys. The PRS program is evidence-based and seeks to improve the lives of inmates in recovery. Inmates receive compensation for their PRS work. The PRS program within the VADOC focuses on peer-centered wellness and recovery. “I thank the staff at Buckingham who are focused every day on providing opportunities for positive change for people in our care, and I thank these nine inmates for their dedication to helping others in need,” said VADOC Director Chad Dotson. “These Peer Recovery Specialists are able to reach part of the inmate population that would not normally seek out mental health services due to the stigma often associated with treatment,” said Buckingham Correctional Center Mental Health Clinician Supervisor Dr. Autumn Quinn. The Greensville Correctional Center, under the Virginia Department of Corrections, has introduced the Residential Illicit Drug Use Program (RIDUP) as an innovative approach to rehabilitating inmates dealing with Substance Use Disorder (SUD). Launched in November 2023, RIDUP is a four-month therapeutic initiative targeting individuals who have experienced overdoses in the last six months. Currently assisting 22 participants, the program addresses the mental, emotional, social, and behavioral aspects of SUD within a secure environment. A dedicated team evaluates referrals and manages admissions statewide, involving staff, inmates, and a specialized treatment team. Inmate peer recovery specialists support the initiative, and participants undergo 72-hour PRS training before transferring to Greensville Correctional Center from Green Rock Correctional Center. Here’s your feel-good story of the day. More than 100 guests danced the night away at the 2023 Special Needs Fall Ball held in Coeburn. Dozens of volunteers from the Wallens Ridge State Prison (WRSP) made the elegant night possible, welcoming attendees from Russell, Scott, Wise, Lee, and Dickenson Counties. The theme of the formal celebration, “The Enchanted Fairy Garden,” transformed Coeburn Middle School into a formidable dance hall, complete with beautiful woodland decor and magical lighting. “At the Virginia Department of Corrections, what we do matters, whether that is in our facilities and probation and parole offices or out in the communities we serve,” said Virginia Department of Correction Director Chadwick Dotson in a media release about the dance. “With this event, Wallens Ridge staff members are demonstrating just another example of their positive impact on southwest Virginia. The VADOC State Farm Work Center in Goochland County is partnering with the James River Horse Foundation to provide incarcerated women with the opportunity to work with retired thoroughbred racehorses. “This program represents one of the many ways the Virginia Department of Corrections and its partners find innovative ways to place our inmates on a path to successful re-entry into society,” said Scott Richeson, VADOC deputy director and James River Horse Foundation liaison, said in a media release." In the span of nine months, from January 1 to September 15, 2023, the Virginia Department of Correction's Centralized Mail Unit prevented 113 pieces of mail suspected of containing drugs from entering facilities, which is an improvement from the 119 pieces intercepted in 2022. This effort is part of the ongoing battle to keep drugs and contraband out of correctional facilities. Various types of mail, including legal correspondence, books, packages, and religious items, have been used to conceal drugs. During the specified period in 2023, 20 books and nine packages were seized on suspicion of containing drugs, while in the entire year of 2022, 19 books and five packages were confiscated for similar reasons.
