There seem to be lots of cuttlefish out in our south Devon / Cornwall waters at the moment - just what Rissos dolphins love to eat! Just waiting for them to move a little further down to Plymouth and fingers crossed we will be seeing them on @plymouthmarinesafari trips later this month, a similar time to last year. In the meantime this is another shot I managed to get in Wales 🏴 Unlike other species of dolphin, Rissos dolphins only have teeth in their lower jaw, with a maximum of around just 14 teeth only. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 are a small species of dragonfly that can be seen as early as May and sometimes can still be found in December if its mild. This is a very common dragonfly, breeding in all sorts of waterbodies from ponds and ditches, to rivers and lakes. As well as this, as their name suggests, they dart forward suddenly from a hovering position to catch their prey (consisting of smaller insects). The 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗮𝘁 is a medium-sized, long-tailed warbler of grassland, scrub and hedgerows. It is a summer visitor and passage migrant, breeding in many areas, but avoiding urban and mountainous places. Males build nests out of twigs and roots so the females can then decide which to take. This small summer migrant travels from Africa to breed in the reedbeds of the UK. Rarely seen but given away by its insect like trilling call; the movement of the head during calling makes it tricky to pinpoint the exact location of singing perch. However I was lucky enough to have a close encounter with this individual and it’s partner when they were collecting food for their chick(s). The 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗿 has declined hugely in recent decades giving it Red List species designation. The decline is due to loss of habitat in both its summer and winter ranges. The 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗵 is a very common species throughout Britain, it can often be disturbed during the day from vegetation along woodland fringes, verges, grassy fields and hedges. Later in the evening is the moth's normal flying time, when it can be attracted to light, however I caught this one resting within the undergrowth one afternoon. The 𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 is a small, short-legged wading bird. They breed on beaches around the coast, like this one, but they have also now begun breeding inland in sand and gravel pits and former industrial sites. The 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗰𝗮𝗽 is a distinctive grey coloured warbler, the male (in the first photo) has a black cap, and the female (seen in the second photo) a chestnut one. Its delightful fluting song earned it the nickname 'northern nightingale'. The 𝗴𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻-𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘆 is a very large dragonfly (7.4-8.4cm long) that can be seen from May to September. It can be found along small, acidic streams in moorland and heathland, but may be found away from its breeding sites, such as in this photo where I found it along the border of a field. The female of this species is the UK's longest dragonfly because of her long ovipositor. This magnificently graceful bird of prey is unmistakable with its reddish-brown body, angled wings and deeply forked tail. It was saved from national extinction by one of the world's longest-running protection programmes. It has now been successfully re-introduced to England and Scotland and is thriving in Wales, with this individual being one of over 500 that I saw within my two weeks of staying in Aber. The 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗹𝘆 is an unusual-looking insect that is found in gardens and hedgerows, and along woodland edges, sat on nettles or in this case, bramble. It has a long, beak-like projection from its head that is uses to feed on dead insects and frequently steals from spiders' webs. It lives up to its name by sporting a scorpion-like tail, which the male uses in courtship displays. Adults usually mate at night, but mating can be a dangerous game for the male, who might easily be killed by the female. So he presents her with a nuptial gift of a dead insect or a mass of saliva to distract or dazzle her - the equivalent of a box of chocolates! Although they are born dark grey, Rissos dolphins are well known for the scars on their body which they accumulate more and more as the years go on. Not the sharpest image by all means but I absolutely love Rissos dolphins! Their body markings are more than unique and make them easy to tell apart from other cetacean species here in the UK. Autumn is a great time to spot them along the coast line. Different to the commons and bottlenose, Rissos primarily eat cephalopods and so their behaviour is different when watching them feed. They tend to dive right down and show their flukes a lot more.
