Creating a sense of scale using the layers of nature! With @dylankato / âI had just woken up from camping near Mount Baker and began walking up to the fire lookout. On the trail, I turned around and saw this incredible view of Glacier Peak, with the layers of mountains and haze in the distance. Since then, the first image of this series has become one of my favorites. The layers enhance its beauty, demonstrating why camping and the liberty it provides is a superb method for landscape photography. Typically, the layers of nature are more visible during the early morning and late afternoon when the sun is low on the horizon, casting long shadows that accentuate the contours of the landscape. So, if you can camp close to your favorite subjects and capture them during sunrise or sunset, your images will likely look way better. The visibility of natureâs layers can also be affected by weather conditions. The layers will be more visible on clear days with minimal haze or fog. The season can also play a role. In the fall, for example, the changing colors of the leaves in the forest can create a beautiful contrast against the surrounding landscape, making the layers more visible. In this sense, while shooting on location, to form the backdrop, far-off mountains or hills are interesting. For the middle layer, seek out tree groupings, hills at intermediate distances, groups of objects, rivers, or lakes - see pics 1, 2, and 3. If you have a body of water in the foreground, altering your viewpoint may enable you to observe a reflection of your subject, which can generate further intrigue - see pics 4, 5, and 6. For the front layer, try using rocks, grass, or a personâcompare pics 5 and 6. If you place an object in the foreground, you can add weight and balance to your image - especially when you change your perspective by getting lower, as demonstrated in pictures 7 and 8. I had the please of visiting Castlepoint for the first time on my recent trip. Practical insights into understanding the golden ratio, the rule of thirds, and @long.explorerâs editing process! âCreating dynamic and aesthetic photos relies on good composition. To achieve visually pleasing images, consider the following compositional rules: 1) The golden ratio (1.618 to 1) is a common pattern found in nature that naturally leads the viewer around your image in a balanced and visually appealing way. You donât need to do any complex calculations to apply this technique. Awareness of this pattern, looking for it in nature, and composing your images with a spiral arrangement can be sufficient, especially when starting - see pic. 2. 2) The rule of thirds simplifies the golden ratio and is easy to apply with our cameras and editing software. To use this rule, divide your landscape into thirds horizontally and vertically, creating a grid with nine rectangular areas. Then, place your subject at one of the intersecting points, like the top left or right, or bottom left or right. This simple adjustment can make your image more visually appealing - see pic. 3 To find these patterns in nature, I try every possible perspective getting ultra-wide shots, compressed tele shots, detailed shots of the surroundings, and panoramic shots. Shooting like this lets you get into a very intense flow and maximize your compositions. 3) When editing, I start by adjusting the exposure and white balance. Then, I fine-tune the light using curves and sliders. Next, I edit the colors until I achieve the desired style. To sharpen my photos, I use âSupersharp AIâ to bring more details and make the image look crisper. Sometimes, you want to reframe your photo to adhere as closely as possible to the compositional rules mentioned above, which means you get a lower resolution. In this case, use the âAI Upscaleâ tool to recover more details. Finally, I make local adjustments to highlight the subject, darken the foreground, and remove unwanted objects. I aim for a defined color scheme with two or three colors to maintain a consistent and recognizable style in my photos - see pics 8 to 10.â ðšðž

This was a hard one to photograph... Tried to avoid an angle with ghosting and fingerprint smudges with the huge number of crowds jostling for a position to get a clear shot. To be honest, I am not surprised that they decided to restrict access for the public during mid-April. See images 8 to 10 and compare - Find below the full explanation â¬ïž 1) âI love working with color and adore sunrise, sunset, or blue hour. When the light comes from one specific direction, controlling your highlights and shadows and where the eye will automatically be drawn is easier. 2) In this seriesâ example, the clouds were insane when I woke up. If you have good clouds and a clear horizon, youâve got a good sunrise or sunset - see pic. 8. 3) I spent all day figuring out where I wanted to shoot. The safest bet was to shoot the Golden Gate Bridge. This photo was taken at a spot called Fort Point, but the location is one where I knew I needed something interesting other than the bridge. 4) When the sky started to go off, I set up my tripod to my desired position. I set a 2-second timer and had my friend drive. I opened my shutter for 30 seconds for both photos: one photo of the car moving forward to create the red trails from the tail lights (see pic. 9) and another coming toward me, making the white trails from the headlights (see pic. 10). 5) In Luminar Neo, I edited the two photos separately. Before making any alterations, I ensured they looked how I wanted them to. 6) I ensured the photo with the sky I wanted to use was the main photo and the bottom layer. I dragged the other on top. With the second layer selected, I picked the area of the light trails and deleted the rest of the photo. 7) Once I had the two trails in there, I carefully went through this layer and erased all except the trails, making it easy to merge and blend. 8) After they were blended, I blurred a tiny bit of the edges of the light trails so they would blend more seamlessly with the main layer. 9) I added some of the Orton Effect and did local dodge and burn. Then, I adjusted the highlights, shadows, and color before exporting it into the âafterâ photo you see in this series!â ðš

Photography had never even crossed my mind when I was young. It began when I was in a bad place and felt like a lot was going wrong. When it was time to get back on my feet, I let my heart decide what I should pursue instead of what everyone else thought I should. Thatâs when I felt compelled to spend more time in nature. Photography came shortly after. I loved the vast landscapes, fragile ecosystems, and intimate moments. It sparked the creative side I needed to share with the world. Ever since I took my first shot, itâs been an unexplainable feeling at times. Whenever I have the camera in my eye, I can only describe it as a feeling of âIâm home.â I was supposed to do it. Not only that, but I also studied geology and biology at university. As a geologist/biologist, I needed to be more effective. If I could translate science into a universal language everyone could understand, I could create a meaningful yet lasting impact. Thatâs where art can act as a bridge of empathy and understanding. Art and love are essentially the same; it is the process of seeing yourself in things that arenât you. We cannot care for something we donât understand; thatâs why photography is important. I want to be the voice for the places and animals that canât communicate. Following this path is how I eventually captured my winning shot - see pic. 1. This trip to the coast allowed me to travel to a legendary place. We were blessed by the weather every night, with little clouds and many clear nights to stargaze. I love staying up late because it is a time when you truly feel connected with yourself and the land.
