Hi Soulmates, I was not sure why I woke up this morning with this song in my heart, so I really studied the lyrics and then went quiet and see what came up. Well, it hit me like a freight train - this is what I have done my whole life - holding on to the pain and the messes I had created for one more day - I would make a change tomorrow! For whatever reason "Hold On" by Wilson Phillips has been following me around this week, so I'm taking it as a sign that we should look at a modern Fat Friend, Carnie Wilson. Carnie was 1/3 of Wilson Phillips, which also included her sister Wendy and their friend Chynna Philips. According to the internet, they formed in 1989, but their debut album was released in 1990. Carnie was always larger in size than Chynna and Wendy, and has publicly talked about struggling with her weight, and how she was an easy target for public fat-shaming. One of the interesting things we get to see in her clothes is actually the evolution of how stylists have started to figure out how to dress fat bodies more. While not all the looks were great, the red skirt suit in the photo here is pretty baller, and the fact she's wearing a sheer bustier underneath to match Chynna and Wendy's bra looks is a step in the right direction. The MTV "leopard" look is less great, and I wish they would have abandoned the long jacket and tied her leopard shirt up around her waist instead of falling for the old "must obscure fat body" line of thinking. Prince was such an astonishing musician and here’s yet another example: A European 7” of Martika’s early 90s hit, “Love Thy Will Be Done” that I found over the weekend. Prince wrote and produced it for her (his voice is buried in the backing vocals as well) and you know, for what amounts to a mellow four-minute vamp, it’s fantastic. Basically he must have decided to write a Wilson-Philips song, because this uses all their trademarks—the three-part harmonies, the deep reverbs, the low-key spirituality—and turns them up 1,000 percent.
