🚨Nerd Alert 🚨 A study was conducted by the ISSW in 2018, looking at avalanches in Colorado’s continental snowpack, with a focus on persistent weak layer problems. It showed that 55% of avalanches on persistent weak layers occurred within three days of a snowfall event and 74% of persistent weak layer avalanches released within seven days of a snowfall event”. That still leaves us with the chance of a few anomalous avalanches yet to drop and waiting for significant load, such as; cornice fall, skiers on slope, significant new load, wind loading or rain. The study found that “13% of the avalanches in our dataset released more than 10 days after what we defined as a loading event. Only 1% of avalanches released after more than 10 days with no measurable snowfall.” All that this study really concluded was; “avalanches after many days without snowfall may fall into the “unlikely” category and a Low (1 of 5) danger when evaluating likelihood. On the other hand, if small snowfall amounts continue, the likelihood of avalanche release may remain at “possible” and a Moderate (2 of 5) danger for as long as snowfall continues.” What this study is pointing out is that even though the danger rating you’re seeing in the forecasts is dropping, this does not mean the problem is gone. We are in a mindset of entrenchment where we must determine the “stability” vs “hazard” concept. The hazard may be dropping but the consequences of an avalanche on a layer buried over a meter deep could be catastrophic. So before you commit to a terrain feature solely based on the hazard assessment you read in an avalanche forecast, do your research. Dig down to the PWL and determine the stability of your slope through snowpack tests, know that snowpack variability may affect your results. You can’t out smart a PWL through snow science results. Approach terrain that could produce large avalanches with a conservative mindset and be prepared to accept the consequences that go along with “low probability, high consequence” persistent weak layer snowpack issues.

since moving to Utah 7 years ago the @skiutah Interconnect Tour has been on my bucket list (not going to lie, a bit intimidating to say the least, with 26 miles of skiing). the planets aligned, an all-star crew of friends was gathered and we did the damn thing yesterday! beyond grateful to travel in the backcountry in my beloved Wasatch Mountains and ski all 6 resorts in a day! i was nervous when we started the day, unfamiliar with that lay ahead, but as we settled in the nerves calmed and we had one of the best days in the mountains i’ve ever had. There's no place I'd rather be for the holidays than Larch Hills ✨️ I love spending Christmas with my family and doing our little holiday traditions together, even though we were all cozy in a little cabin again this year with no personal space. When your bedroom is also the living room and the dining area and the front entrance, you start to look forward to moving back into your house 😂 I don't get to ski at Larch Hills very often so it's always a treat to be here. Every year the trails seem to get shorter and the hills less steep, but it's so nostalgic to rip around the trails that I grew up on, and also to run into old friends! Salmon Arm is a nordic town -- I swear every fifth person owns a pair of xc skis. Seeing so many people out enjoying the outdoors made me realize how lucky we are to be able to ski. I know, blah blah gratitude... but seriously, skiing is a privilege that not everyone gets to experience. I had an injury last year and missed out on a lot of classic skiing, and I remember feeling disappointed in my body for not allowing me to do what I wanted. But these last few months I've finally been doing more classic, and it feels awesome to get to choose my technique and know that I can handle it! So if you're not as healthy or able as you'd like to be right now, remember to be kind to yourself. Your body knows how to heal, and you'll be back doing the things you love before you know it 🙂 Also, thank you to my sister who took these photos! I couldn't pick just one ;)
🇬🇧 KIT LAUNCH 🇬🇧 Here is the @gb_adult_skaters kit for @wwmglombardia2024 @imgamastersgames ! Our athletes will be toastie and warm in these Winter Games coats as they travel from venue to venue, marching in the opening ceremony and staying cosy by the rinkside and they cheer and support each other, and other athletes at the Winter World Masters Games 2024. The athletes could choose either red or white to wear, so they’ll look super eye catching and smart, and having the two colour options keeps things more interesting. You may remember the GB skaters wore navy at the Innsbruck games, so it was decided to have something a little different this time. The branding matches the existing @gb_adult_skaters kit so the coats will be teamed up with their existing gillets, jackets, bags, costume bags, leggings and all the other accessories that have become part of the international adult competitive kit!
