An astounding experience, standing in the crater of a volcano that last erupted 1.2 million years ago (these pictures can't do justice to the sensation of space), we felt the violent energy of the eruption as if it had been a month ago. That is geological time! All the earth's pigments were laid bare before us, ochre, sienna, umber, and we stood on the ancient soot spewed up from the earth's core. From the Stejarii seculari de la Breite, an area of grassland and ancient oaks just outside Sighişoara in Transylvania. Why someone would use a hollow, yet still very much alive, oak tree as a fireplace is beyond me, but the result is quite dramatic. It seems there are a number of large hazel bushes in Virum, so I will be coppicing for the next few weeks, and harvesting the hazel poles for my installation Keep. It's an example of how breaking it down can help. 320 poles sounds so much but looking at my neighbours' hazel, it alone will yield about 30 poles...so 10 like this will do it. Back in the Danube Delta after a decade, we visited Insula Păsărilor (Bird Island), a sanctuary where I was glad finally to see the endangered Dalmatian Pelican, which was one of our chosen species represented in #withNature2020. A wonderful experience for all the family BUT I have just written to them to suggest they follow their own advice where the restaurant is concerned. It was wall to wall burgers and sausages, crowdpleasing and easy but also completely contrary to advice on eating less meat if we want to save what little #rainforest remains. Inspirational visit to @oestergro rooftop farm today in Copenhagen's @Sankt Kjeld district where there are also amazing landscaping projects underway to absorb heavier rainfall, reduce pollution and capture C02 (see the roundabout with 'mini-skov' planting). Vegetables from the allotment, planted on the roof of a former car auction showroom are given out in weekly boxes, with eggs and honey, to locals who buy a share in the cooperative. #wildcherries in a local hedgerow. They are just festooned across the trees at present. In this hedgerow which is about 8 metres wide and probably nearly a kilometre long, running down the side of a field, the edible species we found were: wild cherry, raspberry, blackberry, elderflower, nettle, sloe (blackthorn), ground elder ..but there are surely more..such a valuable resource for humans and animals. It's the final encounter of our series running across this week, 'Meet the coordinators' on Saturday 26th June at 13:00 CEST LIVE on @UNbiodiversity In Norway, @barekraftigeLiv (Sustainable Living) organised @withNature2020 to highlight the Polar Cod – a key species in the Arctic Ocean and Norwegian waters. This species is a vital link in the Arctic food chain, which is under threat from both climate change and Arctic oil drilling (for producing more plastic!) - obviously interrelated! Bidisha Biswas designed and led the installation of the Polar cod, which was a distinctive image, created with reclaimed plastic from the ocean, which was collected in only one week by @inthesameboat.eco , Western Norway. On Friday 25th June at 13:00 CEST (European summer time) a chance to meet Cara Gilliland and Stirling Spowers of @regendublin in conversation with Joanne Robinson from @thelittleartschoolhub as well as - we hope - @shonawilsonartist . Cara's grandfather well remembers the curlews that would accompany his childhood football games in the southwestern county of Kerry. It's a source of great regret to him that the curlew has all but disappeared and for this reason Cara and fellow students at Trinity College, Dublin decided to represent a curlew as their endangered species for @withNature2020 #tapestryofspecies on #biodiversityday2021. It has struck me working with Cara, Stirling, Maisie and the ot hers that this generation doesn't have the option of being apolitical as my generation largely were as university students: the issue of planetary crisis is too pressing. Friday 25th June at 13:00 CEST (European summer time) on @unbiodiversity In the next of our series 'Meet the Coordinators', we'll meet Joanne Robinson, founder of the Little Art School in Ayr, Scotland (@thelittleartschoolhub ). The Little Art School is all about building confidence and self-esteem through drawing and their #scottishwildcat contribution was all about letting the young people lead, from the design of the image (@itsnathsart ), to laying it out and filming it from the drone. They worked closely with @saveourwildcats , a European partnership project dedicated to Scottish wildcat conservation and recovery. Of the project @withnature2020 Jo says: "Part of the joy was feeling part of a global effort to raise awareness using art. Meeting people who have talked about the fact they had no idea the wildcat was so close to extinction has made us feel that we have raised awareness by being part of the project. However perhaps it was the reaching out to other countries: Ghana, Bulgaria, South Carolina and Brazil, which were the unexpected incredible highlights of the project." Join us LIVE on Thursday 24th June at 18:00 CEST to meet Ian Issaia McRyhew @trophiccascades1977 One of the joys of this week editing @unbiodiversity is to be able to give voice and introduce to others the amazing people I met while creating withNature2020. One of them is Ian, who approached me out of the blue via the Facebook page @withnature2020 asking if he could create an image for the project. He's a person with genuine compassion and humanity, which I am realising goes hand in hand with compassion for Nature. Ian is interested in Horticulture and particularly in limiting the spread of invasive species. His giant image, created on the campus of Salish Kootenai College (https://www.skc.edu/) on the Flathead Reservation in Montana, was a planted flowerbed in the shape of a #whitebarkpine . This is a species which is suffering severe die back due to a variety of human-influenced factors on the mountain ranges of Montana.
