When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.” Do you ever feel you are drowning (in even 2 inches of water) and the river is raging with a current and turbulence so strong you cannot tread, let alone keep your head above the foam? Do you ever fear even the slightest flicker of a flame so much that the smell of smoke suffocates you and the flame turns into a wildfire that spreads and burns for days? Yes, you do, and so do I. YET we have a Savior that has never left. All we had to do is reach for the safety of a lifeline. He was THERE and we did not drown. The fire was truly just a flame that He easily would have snuffed out, had we asked. We didn’t have to get burned. We never should have felt consumed. HOWEVER, we have felt this and we probably will again. WHY? Because we were created to need a Savior. We were created with excellence yet with an innate need for God. His mercies are new every morning and it is why we are NOT consumed. His compassions will never fail us. His faithfulness ~ we cannot even fathom its greatness. He IS our portion ~ we get ALL He has! HE IS OUR HOPE! (See Lamentations 3:21-24) Today is the day to come up out of the waters and run out of the flames. He calms the waters and extinguishes the flames. “When you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.” ~Isaiah 43:2 I had to go ahead and do the second half of this verse too! Fire can do a lot of things. It can turn batter into a delicious fluffy cake. It can bring joy to the five year old for whom that cake was baked. It can melt ice cream, burn skin, melt wax to release a calming scent. But it can be powerful and destructive and consuming. It can decomate entire forests, bring buildings to nothing but ashes, turn lives upside down. I began to consider why this verse might use both the illustration of water and fire. Water is overwhelming and powerful. But fire is destructive. It is consuming. Many things that are touched by water will eventually dry. But once touched by fire, things are left with that mark. Left with a burn, a scar, or otherwise completely decimated. Even the smallest flame in a candle leaves evidence behind- you can smell when it is blown out. But not so for the child of God. That fire that consumes will not consume you. That fire that destroys will only harden the steel of your sword. It will sharpen you, refine you and leave you stronger than before. And as the story in Daniel goes, you will not even have the smell of it on you. In 2016 I listened to Jenny Simmons give her testimony at the Refresh Women’s Conference. Her song, “Hope Now” was inspired by Isaiah 43. After that day I became obsessed with that song, see, my uncle passed in 2015, 9 months later in January of 2016, my grandfather passed, 8 months following that my 18 year old cousin passed, I had lost a baby in May & my marriage was hanging in the balance. All I had left at that point was hope that God was going to get me through somehow. In the last year I’ve come to realize KVNE doesn’t play “Hope Now” very often, but every time they do, it’s when I desperately need it, when I need that reminder. I noticed this last November, my aunt was in hospice & coming to the end of her life. I’d been running from the hospital to home all week, the kids had barely seen me, I was worried about mom & all I could pray was for God to use me however was needed. I was almost home when the song started playing and I knew then God was going to take her that night. Yesterday morning, in my despair & brokenness Justin turned the radio on without a word, within an hour it came on. God always lets us know he’s with us, and he lets us know in a way that speaks to only us; only the person it’s meant for is going to catch it. God cried out to his people to turn back to him through Isaiah over and over again. He told them of their impending doom and exile if they did not repent from worshipping false gods and come back to him. God loved his people so much he was filled with holy jealousy for them. He could not allow them to run away after things that would only destroy them. So he gave them warnings, tastes of hard time and constant calls through the prophets to return to him or be destroyed. But because of God’s love he also promised a day when his people would return and he would be their God again. And he would tell them of this precious day through his prophets too! In this passage God is foretelling the rescue and return of Israel in the end. His people as a nation coming home spiritually and physically to him. He tells them not to worry because he has ransomed them, he knows them by name and they are his. He explains that no matter what they go through, no matter how far they are he will rescue them and bring them back home. Through flood, raging sea and flame, God will be with them. They will not be consumed. While we are not Israel, we too have been adopted by this same loving Father, the God of the universe. These same principles of rescue and bringing us home to him are open to us. There is nothing that God will not be with us through, no roaring waters, no white hot flame he cannot handle. We will not be consumed because our God is with us and all things will now before him! Let’s take all our junk before him and bow in worship before our magnificent God who cares so much he carried out the greatest rescue plan ever conceived just for you and me!
